Trying to build my library of 4K UHD movies.
One of the great Wes Craven classics that I had to have.
Music, Movies, everything really. 1984 was an amazing year.

Content creators like "Previously Viewed" really show how much they restored the film to its full original glory vs the Blu-Ray version.
The version I got didn't bundle both 4K UHD and Blu-Ray versions like many other movies do, but that's ok.
Plays great on the PS5 Pro.

Freddy looks better than ever in 4K. Don't get too excited about the unrated version though. A whole eight seconds were added back in and, unless you're really familiar with the film, you probably won't even notice them. Still, it is a nice addition to the set and the picture quality alone makes this edition worth buying.

I had never heard or seen this film before, except for The Simpsons' spoof of it. I find information on the film and finally watched on YouTube and I couldn't take my eyes off it. I did get a little scare, but I know it is only a movie...I am not stupid! And to you Johnny Depp fans like I am, this is his first film.

The film (as you all know) starts with 15-year-old Nancy Thompson (I think) suffering from violent nightmares about a badly burned man wearing a glove with knives on each finger. She quickly learns that this man -- a child murderer named Freddy Krueger is also terrorizing the dreams of her friend Tina, her boyfriend Rod and her (Nancy's) boyfriend, Glen. As they begin to die one by one in their sleep, Nancy learns from her mother, that years ago, the parents of Elm Street burned Krueger alive, by leaving a trial of gasoline to the his boiler room; also splashing the gas around the place. And now Freddy's ghost is back to claim their children's lives as revenge! So Nancy must save their lives and her own by bringing Freddy out of their dreams and back into the real world to destroy him forever.

The was film was a horror film success, that four sequels were made. But because of the negative reviews, I am not going to watch them. So my last word is that this film a excellent scare-fest, and I would advise you of naive nature like me NOT to watch it before bed (*evil laughter*).

Great movie, who does not like Mr. Krueger?

This movie has the classic line- Whatever you do, don't fall asleep. Freddy Krueger statts to stalk the kids of Elm Street in their dreams and when they are killed in their dreams, they die for real. This is movie has more gory scenes than Halloween. If you want graphic horror violence, extreme violence and brutal violence, then this is the movie for you. I like this movie, but it's not my favorite in the series. My favorite movie in the series is the second film- Freddy's Revenge and the third film- Dream Warriors. This is a great horror film and a must-have for every fan of the horror genre. This is a slasher movie and one of the best slasher movies ever made- but without the success of Psycho and Halloween, this movie would not have been made possible. Psycho and Halloween are the best movies in the slasher genre. I like Johnny Depp's scene in this movie and all the gore coming out of the bed. Fantastic moment in the film. The end of the movie is cheesy. If you like slasher movies, skip this movie and watch the Scream series.

Going in, I hoped for a cheesy 80's-horror movie. I didn't get that. I got the apex of 80's films which has influenced three generations of fans, 6 sequels, one remake, a T.V. show and an army of trick-or-treater's. (Which I don't fully understand why kids would know what this is, but hey, It's just a movie. The story is tight and scary (something I can't say about horror films these days) The acting was great and the effects are awesome.

Overall you NEED to see this. It is worth the money and I am totally going to keep this for years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars A true horror classic!
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2019

Much like a dream...or a nightmare...A Nightmare on Elm St. is many things at once. It's one of the quintessential 80s horror flicks...defining a decade where horror was quite prolific...it gave birth to the legendary icon that is Freddy Kruger (Robert Englund)...who now sits proudly among Frankenstein's monster and Count Dracula in the halls of horror... and it certainly is one of Wes Craven's best films, in a solid career of genre filmmaking. Most of all, it's a damn good horror flick!

Wes Craven gives us a cast of likable teens haunted by the malevolent specter of a child molester that their parents murdered after he was freed on a technicality. Now vengeance comes when they are at their most vulnerable...while they sleep. And that's what makes this work so well. We all know how vulnerable we are when we are sleeping and Craven uses that fear to not only draw the audience in, but present us with some unsettling and spooky dream sequences where Freddy torments and then finishes off his victims. Craven also crafts a spooky boogie man who is a very frightening figure in his first outing, before becoming an anti-hero of sorts in the later sequels that got more humorous and outlandish as they went on.

The lead cast is fairly solid including spunky Heather Langenkamp as our heroine Nancy, Amanda Wyss as the ill-fated Tina, Nick Corri as Tina's delinquent boyfriend Rod, the always good John Saxon (and I am a BIG John Saxon fan!) as Nancy's sheriff father and a young unknown named Johnny Depp as Nancy's boyfriend Glen...not to forget Robert Englund chilling our bones as Freddy in a role that would make him a horror film legend.

The film isn't perfect, there is some very weak dialog peppered throughout and a few weak performances in the supporting cast especially Ronee Blakely who seems to be acting in another movie, or a soap opera, as Nancy's alcoholic mother. Langenkamp has a few weak moments early on, too, but as Nancy gets stronger so does her performance. Flaws aside, the make-up and gore effects supporting our story are quite good and the dream sequences are visually effective and quite spooky, despite the limitations of a low budget. The film is loaded with chills and suspense and is still effective all these years and sequels later.

Another trend setting horror and a true classic that continues to find fans with each new generation. This series was a favorite of mine as the 80s horror franchises went, as the Halloween and Friday the 13th sequels just became redundant weapon of the month club features while the Elm Street?films, even in their weakest installments, were continually inventive with their nightmare sequences.?Also stars the Insidious series' Lin Shaye as one of Nancy's teachers. A classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nancy in Terrorland
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 18, 2012

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a credit to the horror genre; Poe might have envied this macabre masterpiece. Inspired by Cambodian refugees who, fleeing the Khmer Rouge genocide, died while having nightmares (and I thought Cambodians only had nightmares about Gary Glitter) Wes Craven's story is mind-bending. This is the maestro at his best: sinister and vicious, building suspense in between scenes of creative carnage.
Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Nick Corri and Johnny Depp play teenage friends who share nightmares about a maniac with knives for fingers. When one of them dies gruesomely, their body slashed apart, police suspect their lover, but Nancy (Langenkamp) wonders if the dream stalker has a real world presence...
Robert Englund is a marvellous antagonist; Freddy Kreuger, the dream stalker, is truly menacing here, unlike in later films when he was played for laughs. There's a tantalising mystery about his character, whose back story is revealed only in dialogue. One character describes him as a "filthy child murderer", which is most of the exposition he receives. A lot of slasher films, including later Nightmares, throw in elaborate back stories which say much and little at the same time. Craven doesn't let Kreuger become boring or over-exposed; he exists as a shadowy bogeyman. Langenkamp is also effective as your typical Final Girl. I liked how tough and resourceful she was, setting clever Home Alone-style traps for Kreuger at one point. She doesn't scream unnecessarily or push her boobs together during dramatic moments. Johnny Depp, in what was his debut, is good as her boyfriend. He isn't really challenged here, but his natural presence still accomplishes something.
The dream sequences are beautifully creative and show what heights of imagination horror can attain; anyone who's snobby about this genre should watch Nightmare. Nancy's adventures are like Alice in Wonderland gone wrong; strange terrors besiege her as she's chased through the fake reality of her dreams, from bottomless baths to swampy stairs. A Nightmare on Elm Street is pure macabre: weird and intense.
