Ryan Gosling (Barbie), is hired to find a missing girl, he is not a great detective. He encounters Russell Crowe who breaks his arm. Crowe also gets beaten up in his apartment. They pair up to find the girl. Gosling has a daughter played by Angourir Rice (mean girls) who follows along she is great in her role they meet with Kim Bassinger politician who gives them $5,000 to find her daughter. They also need to find a movie with others looking for it . Matt Boomer plays a hired killer who goes to Gosling's house and uses machine gun to destroy house. Both guys attend a big house party and find a murder, they also locate the missing girl Trail leads to an automatic show for a climatic ending and shootout. Great interplay with Gosling, Crowe and Rice. Excellent documentary special feature. Great fun.

Like everyone else who has seen this film and laughed out loud at these two stars playing detective, I checked and they're probably not going to make a sequel. This film like a lot of great films just didn't make enough money at the box office to warrant a Nice Guys 2 or Nicer Guys 2. Yet, this film is very, very funny, and is a new incarnation for both Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, acting/reacting in a way they each have never have done before. Who knew Ryan Gosling was this funny? Who knew Russell Crowe was this funny? I have seen both stars in all their films, and was delighted to find yet another facet of their acting abilities in humour, by playing reluctant partners in a detective story. In case you are of an age, and you remember the 70's, kudos to the set designer...yes, the 70's really were that ugly, from the wardrobe, to the wall paper, the furniture, the white wicker headboards, you name it, the set designer did a stunning job re-creating the times. We were laughing so hard, we had to rewind the dvd to catch the jokes we were missing because were laughing so hard. If you are not busting a gut at these two guys in the first ten minutes of the dvd, please don't blame me, I loved this film.

I havn't laughed so much in a very long time. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have great chemistry playing two very different types of private investigators. I never knew either could be so funny. Being set in the 70's makes it that more fun. Quick whitted, fast paced, and silly but in a purposeful way. This is a winner that just got swept under the rug by accident. Must see.

Okay, Gosling works well, But Crowe is past this and it is a sad sight to watch him try in vain to turn back the clock and the weight scales. Don't get me wrong; he can act, but this is not the genre for him and he comes across as a badly made version of Raymond Burr. Gosling is fine, but his part if not well written, most of the attention going to Crowe, a wrong-headed choice. That those responsible for the script were a little blind as seen in the total waste of the villainess. She is so wishy-washy and obviously miscast. And then we come to Matt Bomer. It isn't a part. He's a plot device with no depth. Pathetic, because only he and Gosling are right for this type of film. Gosling and Bomer should be cast as the "Nice Guys" heroes in a sequel and send Crowe scurrying back to his dramas. Which begs the question - why is Hollywood wasting Bomer? He can sing, dance, do comedy or drama, is as handsome as hell, and apparently a very nice man. And he has a large fan base with "White Collar" still turning up in prime time on a lot of stations. So, why waste him in this reasonable film or have him killed off near the beginning of "The Magnificent Seven" leave two good actors and five horrible choices for your leads?

You will laugh a few times , mostly in the second half since the first half seems it tries too hard.
You will wonder where Maximus Decimus Meridius went too, he's been replaced by Sir Les Patterson

This is so much fun, in a very adult way. It is set in the 70s and the decadence as a back drop to the bumbling dectectives really adds to telling of this story.

The plot revolves around the two PI's being hired to find a lady called Amelia who has become involved with a lot of dodgy adult film people, and this leads to much hilarity involving drunkeness and many scraps. I think the stand out performance here comes from the actress playing Holly March, daughter of Ryan Gosling's Holland March. She is the heart of story as we see her continually being put in harms way and showing incredible bravery as a result of it.

What makes this so enjoyable is even through the central characters are so flawed, you still want them to back them due to the brilliant performances of the actors playing them. They mean to be 'nice guys' but real life keeps getting in their way. Also the director Shane Black is so visually gifted, this movie never stays still for very long, and we are able to feast on the luscious backdrop of 21st century Los Angeles, but with the veil of set design to take us back in time. The camera is constantly filling the screen with so much detail that being bored is not an option. The dialouge is snappy and not for the feint hearted.

If this was a novel I would definitley describe it as a page turner because despite all the nonsense and incredularity going on you do want to know what this is all about. I really hope this leads to a sequel and we get to see even nicer guys.
