I was a little bit skeptical about upgrading to a New 3DS, considering my old navy blue model still works fine. I had never previously had an XL version of a Nintendo handheld device either, as I often viewed the quality as being slightly lower than the original (smaller) counterparts. I ultimately chose to buy this for the improved processing power, allowing better play of Super Smash Brothers.

    Pros:
    - The enhanced 3D functionality through face tracking is outstanding! I never liked the 3D on my old 3DS, and often got headaches from trying to use it. These problems are completely erased for a far better experience with the New 3DS XL! I've found myself playing old games over again just to appreciate the 3D graphics that I couldn't enjoy before. This stable new 3D is what the original 3DS *should* have provided.
    - The New 3DS XL is of higher quality than previous DSi XL or 3DS XL consoles. The volume and 3D sliders are well made, and stay firmly where you drag them to. The speakers and overall build quality on my model is excellent!
    - The controls are easy to use and feel very comfortable in my hands. I haven't had much use for the added nub or ZL/ZR buttons yet, but they certainly don't get in the way.
    - The improved speed relative to the old 3DS models is notable, and downloads are much faster on this device.
    - The hinges for the screen click comfortably into one of two positions, and the upper screen experiences very minimal shaking when the 3DS is moved around while open.
    - The screens, body size, shape, and weight of the New 3DS are fantastic! Now that I have used this console, my old 3DS feels tiny and clunky in my hands by comparison. The New 3DS XL fits very comfortably in my hands, even through long periods of use.

    Cons:
    - The larger screen appears to have the same resolution as my smaller old 3DS does, making some of the graphics look slightly more pixelated than I would normally be used to. Overall the graphics are still very good, and this is only noticable in some specific situations.
    - The power button is located near the pen holster, and there have been multiple times when I've almost pressed it accidentally when blindly groping around for the pen.
    - Having the game cartridge on the bottom/front of the console makes me feel like I might accidentally eject it more often than if it were on the back of the 3DS like it has been previously. This is probably just me being paranoid though.

Overall I would highly recommend the New 3DS to anyone that can afford it. Please remember that this device DOES NOT come with it's own charging cable, this was a non-issue for me as I kept my old console as well. The concerns that I have with it are almost entirely minor ergonomic ones, are are greatly overshadowed by the upgraded 3D and processing power. I will not be purchasing a non-XL model again after experiencing the luxury of the larger screens and well spaced button layout that this has.

Got it for ~$160 after taxes due to a stealth Â鶹Çø sale for something like 40+% off, so I'm a bit biased in terms of value here. Transferred/upgraded over from my Yoshi Edition XL; intending to use that as a backup/storage unit.

    **The good**

Nice glossy, metallic finish looks really nice, but will smudge easily. Shoulder buttons are smaller and clickier than the normal 3DSs. Circle Pad feels stiffer and perhaps due to a different rubber compound, doesn't feel as "sticky", but rather smooth and dry. This could also simply be cos the unit is brand new. Face buttons are about the same, but the new Start & Select positions are good and don't feel as awkward to press and look at as before.

I lucked out and I'm pretty sure my model has an IPS display (you can run a series of tests on color gamut and contrast online to be sure, or simply look at the unit from extreme display angles and if it looks washed out, it's probably a TN display). Super Stable 3D isn't totally perfect, but it is a vast improvement over the original 3DS' promise of stereoscopic depth; this is what it should've been from the beginning. Auto brightness is also really cool so you won't have to constantly tab out of games to manually set it.

Speakers sound louder than my XL's model. The headphone jack is also positioned more logically - dead center, instead of off to the left. Greatly appreciated too is the repositioning of the volume slider up to the top display; now you will no longer accidentally run your finger along the thing and RIP your ears. It's also way stiffer and locks in place to mute, just like the 3D slider.

To make room for the ZL + ZR triggers and other internal sorcery, the game cart was pushed to the bottom. This is actually pretty good as I would almost accidentally eject the cartridge sometimes if squeezing the top of the unit for whatever reason. Also, the charger port is now perfectly aligned in the center. Overall, the unit looks and feels more symmetrical (something about the weight balance and sturdiness of the new unit, maybe).

The other big additions is the inclusion of the C-stick, which is way stiffer than I thought it'd be. To use it properly, simply rest your thumb along the top and move it as if it were an air hockey puck. Do not nudge it along its sides; it was intended to be used with your thumb resting on top. It works, it does what it promised to do, but it's not an ideal solution. It doesn't hold a candle to the Vita's true analog nubs for instance, but the kinds of games the 3DS has don't really ask for precision aiming.

The quad-core SoC variant of the OG 3DS' ARM CPU, plus double the system RAM and a slightly beefier GPU are noticeable in certain games, such as Monster Hunter 4U and of course, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. The former lets you play with a more consistent framerate; have greatly reduced load times; the ability to boot and close the game as if it were a normal game (instead of going to a deep OS level operation, which always worries me), and (allegedly) has better textures. The latter is an exclusive to the new system.

Besides that, other software hasn't really taken advantage of the N3DS' horsepower, as understandably, this isn't a PC where better horsepower = better performance. Still, overall OS functionality is smoother and faster, but it's not as noticeable as I was led to believe. eShop feels just as slow as ever for some reason, despite a better wireless card in the unit to boot?? Anyway, hope upcoming titles like Hyrule Warriors Legends will take advantage of the additional horsepower and C-stick utility.

    **The bad**

Stylus position isn't ideal; I greatly preferred the old area where it slides out from your right hand.

The need to buy a new microSD card if you're going the eShop route.

The flimsy feeling backplate and the hassle/worry of it snapping while you struggle to take it off. Here's a hint: as you remove the screws and the plastic hooks underneath, try to pry the backplate outwards instead of straight off. This makes things much easier. Also, using the stylus to pry the thing open will only lead to scratches; just use your fingers.

The literal 30+ step process to transfer data between your old 3DS to this one. Will take (reportedly) several hours to half a day if done over wireless and if you have an especially large digital library. I did it through the PC which took out a lot of the frustration and wait from this, but still, what the actual crap, Nintendo.

Most people are upset at Nintendo's exclusion of a charger and I agree with that from a consumer standpoint, but I have my original 3DS charger with me and a USB dongle in the mail, so it's not bothered me /that/ much. Still, dick move, Nintendo.

    **Result**

In many ways, it'd be easy to call Nintendo out for always being a bit out of touch with the times and iterating upon a single product line throughout its life cycle, often at the expense of the end user. It'd be a bit harsh to say this is what the 3DS should've been from day one, but really, this is what the system should've been from day one.

The 3DS is now at a point where I can comfortably recommending it without hesitation since more or less all of its design shortcomings have been addressed and it's library has grown to be one of the best in gaming (though I don't think it holds a candle to the NDS' library, or in many ways, even the PS Vita's). If Nintendo would just sort out their whole arcane approach towards online connectivity and universal account credentials, to say nothing of region locking then this'd be a five star.

I was a previous owner of the DSi XL, so my review will be comparing the two mostly.

I'm impressed with the graphics of the games. The analog directional stick on the top left is fantastic is makes playing easier on my left thumb, avoiding blisters! The top screen is nice and big. I have not found any use for the new "C" pressure sensitive button yet. The pictures also come out much better than the DSi XL, as expected.

Unfortunately, physically it doesn't seem as solid and heavy duty as the DSi XL. My nieces and kids have dropped that countless times, and it's in very good condition still. This seems like it may break if dropped, but I hope not and hope I'm wrong in that regard... I have the red and it is definitely very beautiful, but a finger print magnet. The system is more comfortable to hold for long periods. Although the new 3D feature really trips me out and gives me a slight headache, so I try to keep it on minimum or turn it off all together. I still enjoy the games without this feature.

The wifi signal on this also is fairly strong, as I use it on my second floor and the router is on the main floor. At first I had trouble getting it to work, but I changed my router settings to support G wireless, and then it worked. Before it was set to allow N only devices. I'm surprised this actually doesn't have wireless N, but the wireless is still fast enough.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this.

This is amazing! When I bought this, I didn't know that it was the newest version of the 3DS so I am more than happy with my purchase. There are so many great features. Prior to purchasing this, I only had a DSi. This is a massive improvement.

    Pros:
    - The console is backwards compatible. Your old DS or DSi games will definitely work on this, you just won't be able to use the 3D function on them. (For example, my copy of Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns runs flawlessly. I'd argue that it runs better than it did on the DSi)
    - The XL screen prevents me from squinting at the screen as I had done on my DSi. It also makes the device itself larger and easier to hold. Even with my small hands, it was a struggle to wield my DSi so I would always recommend an XL screen.
    - There's a smaller "knob" which can help focus the camera/ control your game much better than you could in the original 3DS. This, along with the other analog stick, makes playing very enjoyable.
    - The interior is matte. This prevents smudges and fingerprints.
    - So many cameras. There are two in the back and one in the front. I could play with just the cameras all day.
    - 3D isn't as headache-inducing as it was on the original 3DS. They've improved the face tracking in this version which has made it leaps and bounds easier on my head.
    - I don't know how the browser was for the original 3DS, but this is amazing compared to what it was for the DSi. Pleasantly surprised that Nintendo has created a browser that will run Youtube, especially in such a visually pleasing way. The buttons indicate that you may be able to use the 3D functionality on videos, but I haven't come across anything that works well yet.

    Cons:
    - The layout isn't as visually pleasing as the original 3DS, in my opinion. There used to be three buttons just below the touch screen but now there is only one (the home button). Also, the holes for the speaker are a weird plus sign pattern instead of the nice circle.
    - At the moment, there aren't any great console-exclusive games. Nintendo has stated that there would be games that could run on this, but they're not big titles or anything. As a result, the shoulder buttons seem kind of useless.
    - I bought mine used- like new for $140 from Â鶹Çø's warehouse deals. I would not at all pay the $200 for it. Most of the games for this system (even those that are old) are $30-50. Buying a system that is worth four-to-five of the games that run on it is a little absurd. If you have the cash it is worth it, otherwise I would wait for the price to drop or scope out the warehouse deals as I did.

If you have the money to buy this and a handful of games for it all at once, then I think it's a fantastic buy. But if you have to wait and save up for the games then you may become a little disappointed in the system. It might also be a good upgrade if you're still in the DS/DSi era, like me. It's roughly the same price as the original 3DS, so if you're making a choice between this or the original I would recommend this.

It's definitely fun to use and can even bring new life to games that you may have had sitting around for a while (that analogue stick has saved me from so many hand cramps already!). Can't wait to start digging in to the games I've been missing out on.
