Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's Navigators of Dune is the climactic finale of the Great Schools of Dune trilogy, set 10,000 years before Frank Herbert's classic Dune.
The story line tells the origins of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and its breeding program, the human-computer Mentats, and the Navigators (the Spacing Guild), as well as a crucial battle for the future of the human race, in which reason faces off against fanaticism. These events have far-reaching consequences that will set the stage for Dune, millennia later.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 7, 2016Verified PurchaseI have missed Dune! Sometimes the universes created in literature feel like real places after reading about them over so many years and books. It was nice to have some new material to pour through if only originally purchased out of nostalgia. 'Navigators' had an intriguing plot even though the ending was already written in series lore and more than one, "wait, what!?!" pleasant moments of surprise made this well worth buying hard cover.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 12, 2017Verified PurchaseThe last book in the contracted series of Dune. I got this for my husband who eats these books up in about a week. He doesn't eat, sleep or venture outside until the book is finished.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 4, 2016Verified PurchaseI now have read twenty DUNE books. This one was well done and I could not put it down. The book was an amazing addition to the DUNE universe!!!
- Reviewed in Canada on March 1, 2018Verified PurchaseRead/own all the Dune books. Yes, this one offers a conclusion to the three book "schools" trilogy, and some of the characters from the "butlerian jihad" trilogy as well, but the ending offers little to inform the next trilogy (houses) and makes the series ending a little confusing. I feel as if there are too many questions raised in the previous trilogy that were not answered, same with questions I hoped solved pertaining to the original Dune books, or even the other books by the same authors in this universe.
I found this trilogy (schools: sisterhood, mentats, and navigators) as a whole was not written well and is of a lower quality compared to any of the other books. Sisterhood was especially ripe with repeating itself offering little to no new information each time a character's thoughts were reintroduced. If you are an original Dune fan, these 3 books are not a necessary read and I'd suggest skipping them altogether. Still, it is within the Dune universe, and that will almost always guarantee 3 stars from me. Not sure I'll read them again as I was a little disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Piacevole, ma un po' svogliato

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific End To a Fantastic Series.
Verified PurchaseNavigators of Dune is a brilliant book in a wonderful trilogy of books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. It is set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's Dune (Brian's father)
Now let us get to the elephant in the room.
Dune was a brilliant novel- innovative, entertaining and original. But although I enjoyed it eventually it took me 4 years before I picked it up and read it. It is a novel that demands a mature reader and one to really think about the worlds, the Empire and situations. I simply was not ready to appreciate it.
Many say the Brian Herbert and Anderson books are not nearly as good.
A fair point but to many who found Dune and Frank Herbert's sequels hard going this book and their others are better.
The stories are interesting and engaging and, if you pardon the expression, like the Spice they 'flow' much better.
These books are set in Frank Herbert's universe and tell of the exciting times and events of the 3 main schools- the Sisterhood of the Honoured Matres, The Mentats – human computers and the Navigators who direct the interstitial ships by folding space.
You do need to read the first two in the series to get the full benefit of this terrific trilogy and I can also highly recommend that you go to the other trio of books, the House series, House Harkonnen, House Atredies and House Corrino first to get even more benefit. They are all terrific.
Don't be dissuaded nor waylaid by the Frank Herbert fans who say these books are not a patch on Franks.
This is an excellent read in a brilliant Dune Universe created by the master Frank Herbert.
