When I was looking at portable BBQs the primary issue always seemed to be how truly portable they are. You can save a few bucks but you likely end up getting a boxy model that isn’t all that portable. That is not a problem if you have a large trailer or a truck but can be a challenge if you’re space conscious.
We tent camp in a smaller CUV with a roof top box and a big car seat in our back seat. Things are compact and cozy. By the time you fit all the stuff in we have very limited space. A larger portable BBQ never fit. We splurged on the Napoleon mostly based on the shape hoping that it would work within our limited packing framework. Considering it’s a Napoleon we had few concerns about the quality of the product itself.
When it arrived from 鶹 based on the size of the box I was worried that it was bigger than I had anticipated. Happily those concerns proved short lived. Size wise, the BBQ fit easily on the floor behind the drive in the back seat. The legs fold into the BBQ holding the drip plate into place and leaving it with a very small footprint.
Quality wise we were extremely impressed. This is a HEAVY BBQ based on the cast iron grill that it comes with. I found the cooking surface was adequate for the three of us and you could easily manage most meals for 4 on it with no concerns. The heating felt nice and evenly distributed with no discernable hot spots coming up in the few months I’ve used it. A standard camping bottle of propane should last 3-5 BBQs.
If there was one small criticism it was the cleaning. Not everything hits the drip plate so I was taking the BBQ apart and cleaning it after every meal just to avoid the greasy build up on the insides. I think this is probably an issue with most BBQs so you kind of work with it.
All in all, I feel I got my value despite the higher price point. It’s portable but powerful.
