Turn your favorite Napoleon gas grill into a charcoal grill and smoker for smoky charcoal flavor. The Cast Iron Charcoal and Smoker Tray is easy to use. Remove the cooking grids and sear plates over at least two burners. Place the Cast Iron Charcoal and Smoker Tray directly onto the gas burners. Add a single layer of charcoal to the cast iron tray then turn on the gas burners and replace the cooking grids. Allow the charcoal to ignite and ash over before turning off the gas burners. Once the charcoal is ready, it's time to cook. I own a weber kettle and still enjoy using this on my napoleon propane grill.

On my grill i need to remove all the heat deflectors and place the unit directly on the burners. This places the coals at a great distance from the grill to sear. Add some wood to your charcoal or in the designated tray to smoke and the flavors will be just as good as your kettle.

Once the coals are lit, you can close your burners and it doesn't takw much charcoal to get this moving.

Obviously the propane grill doesn't have vents like a kettle so temp control is near impossible, but if you want to sear and get that charcoal taste this is awsome.

Most of the burnt coat stays in the tray, simply let it cool down to ambiant temp, dispose of coals safely ( i use my kettle 🤷‍♂️) and put everything back in its place.

I love my Napoleon Prestige 500RSIB barbecue. I've had it for 5 years, its extremely well built, and Napoleon's customer service has always gone above and beyond my expectations resolving any minor issues I may have had. So it was with high expectations that I was looking forward to use this product. Note that I've been an hardcore user of a Weber kettle charcoal grill and was hoping to reduce clutter by using this instead with my gas grill. Unfortunately, it did not deliver.

First of all, within 2-3 minutes of its first use it cracked (along with a loud bang that made my ears ring for over an hour). Instructions were followed exactly as indicated on the included sheet of instructions. I had read about this issue before when investigating the product, so its not an isolated incident. The tray sits directly on the burner, and the instructions indicates to turn the burner on the highest setting.

Regardless of this issue, I found that the tray was not ideal. Main issues:
- Even with a deep layer of charcoal, it had trouble bringing the bbq to over 400 degrees, searing the steaks was a bit tough.
- The smoker tray never came hot enough to actually burn the wood chips and produce smoke.
- And while I kind of anticipated this, the ash made a huge mess in the gas grill. I knew it would do this, but when I saw from my own eyes the amount of ash going into the gas burners, I started wondering what this would do long term to the grill.

So, I've sent back the unit for refund and I'm not planning on replacing it.
