Arthur Penn’s haunting neonoir reimagines the hard-boiled detective film for the disillusioned, paranoid 1970s. In one of his greatest performances, Gene Hackman oozes world-weary cynicism as a private investigator whose search for an actress’s missing daughter (Melanie Griffith) leads him from the Hollywood Hills to the Florida Keys, where he is pulled into a sordid family drama and a sinister conspiracy he can hardly grasp. Bolstered by Alan Sharp’s genre-scrambling script and Dede Allen’s elliptical editing, the daringly labyrinthine Night Moves is a defining work of post-Watergate cinema—a silent scream of existential dread and moral decay whose legend has only grown with time. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features • New audio commentary by Matthew Asprey Gear, author of Moseby Confidential • New audio interview with actor Jennifer Warren • Interview with director Arthur Penn from a 1975 episode of Cinema Showcase • Interview with Penn from the 1995 documentary Arthur Penn: A Love Affair with Film • The Day of the Director, a behind-the-scenes featurette • Trailer • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by critic Mark Harris

The Criterion Collection re-releases on Blu-ray this 1975 Neo-noir thriller directed by Arthur Penn and starring Gene Hackman as private detective Harry Moseby investigating the disappearance of a 16-year-old Hollywood nymphette (played by Melanie Griffith) that becomes far more complicated and deadly then he had expected.
Looking quite good in a 4K restoration, an improvement over the previous Warner Brothers DVD and Blu-ray releases, porting over those extras and including a new audio commentary and two vintage interviews with the director. Good mystery and character study unfolds in an original and unorthodox manner, leading to abrupt though action filled ending that will leave the viewer much to ponder. Not a success at the time, though now considered a mini-classic, and recently deceased star Gene Hackman is superb, and his talents are well showcased indeed.
This movie is unconventional and disconcerting, but it sticks in your head and you will probably want to watch it again, and again. John Crawford is awesome as a seedy “entrepreneur”- too bad he didn’t get more chances to show off his great acting abilities.

One of the great Neo Noir thrillers of the seventies. A very complicated story with red herrings and femme fatales and the PowerHouse acting of Gene Hackman Arthur pens forgotten almost underground masterpiece and it's perfect for Criterion and the disc doesn't disappoint.
