Product description

"You are cordially invited to dinner…and a murder!" A killer cast and a screenplay to die for await you in the mirthful mystery spoof, Murder By Death! Eccentric millionaire Lionel Twain (acclaimed author Truman Capote) has invited the world's greatest detectives to his mansion for the ultimate battle of wits. Informing his guests that a member of the dinner party will be murdered at midnight, he offers a million dollars to the sleuth who solves the crime. As the deadly game commences, Sidney Wang (Peter Sellers), Sam Diamond (Peter Falk), Dick and Dora Charleston (David Niven and Dame Maggie Smith), Milo Perrier (James Coco), and Jessica Marbles (Elsa Lanchester) must combine their powers of deduction to survive the night and preserve their reputations—or be exposed as completely clueless. Murder By Death boasts sinister style and lethal laughs, as well as a hilarious script from the master of comedy, Neil Simon.

I love that movie. Long time I was looking for it. I couldn't find it because German and English title are not the same. Thanks.

A great send up of the old fashioned mysteries/detective genre of films. Making fun of fictional sleuths like Sam Spade and Nick & Nora Charles, with some well known actors playing the roles. Especially funny is the portrayal of the blind butler by Sir Alec Guinness.

Neil Simon has been a favorite for a long time.
The conclusion where the "murder" says he's sick of reading murder mysteries and the murder is introduced in the last 5 pages! (I'm talking to you Agatha Christy!)
    great cast, set and script!

I know it is not great art this film. But it is highly enjoyable, poking fun of the 40's Film Noir and Whodunnit films. Shame it requires a reg. A player and an import of disc to enjoy it on Blu-ray in England. Apart from a very entertaining film, there's a; new commentary by film historian Lee Gambin, a conversation with Neil Simon, theatrical trailer & a photo gallery for extras.

The blu-ray of 'Murder by Death' has by far the best transfer this legendary comedy has ever received. Despite its age great care has been taken with the transfer - the print is clean, the soundtrack is clear and free of distortions. The colors haven't been adjusted to the point where they jump out in cartoon-like fashion; indeed it seems great effort was put in to simply clean the original film without too much brightening.

As for the missing 'TV scenes', other reviewers have already noted they're not here. This is a pity since not only do we not get the famous 'Sherlock Holmes drive-up bit (which was part of the departure scene of M. Perrier and his chauffeur, that's why they are the only ones not seen leaving the house at the end), we also don't see another TV exclusive scene. After Twain's body falls and Inspector Sidney Wang's adopted son is told to take care of the body you can see actor Richard Narita (who plays Willie Wang) pause a moment. That's because in the TV version he found a slip of paper in the hand of the body. He presents this to the detectives in the next scene, asking how all the great minds could have missed such a clue. His father simply replies "Did not miss clue. That laundry list." Willie then crumples the paper in disgust. It's a shame these scenes could not be located for this release. BTW, in the bonus feature 'Photo Gallery' there are pictures of additional scenes that are not in the film, nor as I recall in the TV version, so there might be other scenes out there somewhere.

Until the missing scenes are located this disc is the best version of 'Murder by Death' that can be had. The film holds up very well after all these years, and the jokes and situations remain consistently funny.

So get a clue - buy this blu-ray!
