Product description

The Mitutoyo Series 128 Vernier Depth Gauge, Micrometer Type, Inch, have a measurement range 0 to 1", a resolution (or smallest graduation interval) of 0.001", with Plus or – 0.0001" of accuracy. The vernier scale provides precise measurements. These gauges include a 4mm diameter measuring rod for flexibility in measuring range. The units have a ratchet stop for uniform pressure and a measuring rod clamp for stability. They have a satin chrome finish on the thimble for readability. They are available in with a base either 2.5" or 4" long. Depth gauges are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. Depth gauges are precision measuring instruments used to determine the depth of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot. These gauges often take the form of sliders that travel on a measuring beam or rods, are moved to position by hand, and then adjusted with a calibrated screw. The base of the gauge rests at the top of the shape whose recession is to be measured, while the beam or rods extend to the bottom of therecessionto determine the measurement. Gauge position is read from a graduated scale, dial, counters, or an electronic display. Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lil' depth mic

There isn't much to say about depth mics, as there isn't much to innovate upon the design to make it better than others, but I'll cover the important points a tool like this should have.

It is a quality Mitutoyo tool as always, and the aesthetics are supurb. Satin finish on the tool body/thimble, and a mirror (presumably lapped) finish on the base. The measuring pin fits very snugly and has a flawless rotation; the screw movement isn't rough, loose, or excessively tight. It measures what it needs to, and does it well.

I don't like the plastic ratchet on the end, it could be a little beefier, but it isn't critical for the tool's operation, and with so many cheap knockoff brands out there, I can't blame Mitutoyo for trimming up what they can. Same goes for the plastic locking mechanism. It isn't very easy to lock when taking a measurement, and could be designed better (even if plastic instead of the older metal locks).

When I bought this tool, I was stuck between the 2.5" and 4" bases. I'm glad I went with the narrower base, as there are plenty of times when I need to stick this in small areas, and if I need a wider base, parallels or blocks can always extend the reach.
