Product description

One of the most popular television shows of the 1980s, MIAMI VICE helped define the fashion and music of the period while simultaneously maintaining a high quality police drama standard. The show is famous for its pastel colors and bright south Florida settings, which serve to counteract the sleaze its main characters often had to deal with. Sonny and Rico are two cops who work undercover for the Miami Police Department. They must balance their myriad personal problems with the difficulty of being undercover in some of Miami's most rotten criminal businesses. Luckily, upbeat '80s music, and their own personal sense of cool, help. MIAMI VICE made a short-lived star out of Don Johnson, who eventually won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Sonny, and supporting star Edward James Olmos (as a police captain) won both the Golden Globe and an Emmy. This collection includes all five seasons of the show. Product Details Number of Discs: 20 Film Country: USA UPC: 826831071725 Additional Details Genre: Action/Adventure Format: DVD

I was gonna wait t'ill i finished all 5 seasons before i reviewed it but since my review is mostly about the transfer audio and picture quality i decided since i have watched already from season 1 to the middle of season 3 it should be sufficent to give a good review. After all i doubt that the the millcreek transfer for the last two seasons will be all that different than what i have seen so far for the first 3 seasons. If there is any major differences i will come back here and edit my review to include more comments but so far here is my full detailed review.I say detailed review cause i have analyzed the transfer audio and picture wise very carefully and i can honestly say if you like Miami Vice definately buy this set it's superior to the dvd set from universal except for the extras wich this set has none.So if you have the dvd set keep it for the extras.First let's get the audio out of the way. This is probably the same 5.1 surround mix that's on the dvd's.I can't imagine millcreek making a new mix.But i was very impressed with it no matter.I heard some reviewers somewhere saying the mix was bad and that there was not much surround activities. That is complete B.S. I hadn't heard the mix since the dvd's so i didnt remember how active it was but wow was i ever impressed for a surround mix in 5.1 for an old show like this they surely did a great job. Many episodes have lots of sounds in the back surround speakers. For example i was just watching 'down for the count part 1 and 2' in season 3.Thats the episode about boxing and the surrounds where super active the whole time.During boxing matches there was major activity in the back speakers constantly with crowds chearing and yelling and even in smaller scenes like crockett and tubbs driving and talking in the testarossa i could hear the wind making swooshes as cars flyed by next to them in the car.And where there is shootouts you hear bullets ricochetting in the back speakers.Whoever said the 5.1 mix wasnt great don't know what there talking about.I mean sure maybe the sound quality itself of everything might not sound as smooth and as great as a new mix like 'DUNE part 2' or something like that but let's get real this is an old show from the 80's of course the audio recording has its limit. The technology wasnt the same back then and this 5.1 mix can only do so much with what they have. But as far as an active mix and being immersive for an old show i was impressed. You can't ask for more. Now for the picture transfer.Yes this is real hd picture. Its not an upscale like some reviewers had said.Theses reviewers only said that because they dont understand source material.I had access to the dvd set from universal for this review and i went back and forth to compare episodes visually and this is definately an hd transfer and a good upgrade over that.for example i compared the episode 'glades' in season 1 to the one on the dvd and i noticed something. On the dvd the episode was very bad picture wise. There was many scenes that had scratches running accross the screen. On the millcreek bluray all thoses bad scratches were gone.I noticed the same with a few other episodes that looked worst on the dvd but on the millcreek bluray set they were cleaner and less rough looking like 'smugglers blues' for example also. Some professional reviewers online had complain about the episodes not having a consistent look like for example some scenes having thick grain layer and the next scenes having a smooth like appearance. They said thought millcreek had used DNR (digital noise reduction) to smooth things out.Ok first of all i did noticed that inconsistent look with most episodes but guess what? Again the reviewers don't know what theyre talking about. This is not DNR.First of all do you honestly think a small company like millcreek would take hours and hours going through each episode and use DNR on certain scenes and none on others? i dont think so lol.Secondly i checked on the universal dvds and even though its not in hd i noticed the same variation in picture from scenes to scenes.Sometimes it looks grainy and rougher and other scenes have a smoother look.So i concluded that its part of the original source material. The camera or lenses they used back then or something they did when they shot the show.maybe theyre cameras or lenses reacted differently in different light condition. So how does it look if its not dnr? I find it looks pretty good and filmic. Most of the time there is a nice grain layer that shows that they went to the original source to make the transfer.it shows you thats its not an upscale.Yes that grain layer is not always consistent.Sometimes the grain gets noisy looking in some scenes but in general it looks pretty good.Better than miami vice has ever looked on home video. You can tell the show wasnt shot for hd in mind. The 1080p resolution is doing all it can to extract as much detail as possible from a show that was shot cheaply in thoses days compare to shows of today. Some episodes and scenes look soft and not very detailed and other episodes and certain scenes can look very impressive here and there.Just know that its not really millcreeks fault im sure. Its part of the original source material. There is some Miami Vice bluray sets from other countries that were made and some people that bought thoses brag online that they look wayyyyy better than the millcreek set.First of all my response to that is of course since thoses sets cost like maybe triple what your gonna pay for the millcreek set its understandable that the people who bought them would want to justify why they purchased them.So in other words either they dont really look any better and its just people wanting to think they do so they justify spending a lot more getting them or if the set actually looks better it would mean that thoses other companies would have made the show looking better and the only way i can see miami vice looking better than the millcreek set is if thoses other companies made a complete restoration by going through each episodes and going scene by scenes and improving each scene painstakingly.cause thats the only way that it can look better.Cause i mean yes when you look at episodes on the millcreek set thats the biggest thing is that from scene to scenes often there is differences.Either in black levels or colors. Some scenes have colors that pop and then a few mins later a scene has colors that look faded. One scene can have great black levels and then the next scene has greyish black levels.Like i said i believe that is part of the source material. How they shot the show back then that created that.If you want things to be more consistent the only solution is a complete restoration scene by scenes.you can always boost the contrast also if you find the picture look a bit washed out sometimes but i tried that and noticed that it kind of ruined the picture in some way so i went back to just letting it how millcreek has it.I heard that one of the sets from another country has more contrast and colors pop more but i heard a reviewer online say that the contrast boost didnt look good on that set so you see what i mean? People pick on the millcreek set but i think millcreek probably did the best job without going the full restoration route. Now before i finish my review i want to say that i love the packaging also.Millcreek did a lovely job on the artwork as far as i am concerned.Way better than universal had with the dvds.Univeral had used the same crockett and tubbs picture of them leaning on the daytona spider for the first 2 seasons and then for the last 3 seasons just photoshoped the same pic over a new testarossa pic. That looked really bad to me.And also the pictures they used on the foldouts sets for each seasons didnt correspond to pics from each seasons. For example for the universal set for season 2 they put two big pics of crockett and tubbs with the dark clothing fashion look of season 3.That didnt look right on a season 2 set.But the millcreek set fixes all that.each cases has pictures appropriate to each seasons. The pictures are well chosen and look perfect.Sure the discs are stacked but thats not so bad.You can always replace them with your own cases with seperate discs holders. So there you have it.This millcreek set is a must if you Like Miami Vice.Is the picture quality perfect ?No.If you compare it to other bluray shows like star trek the next generation or macgyver on bluray its not as good picture wise but for how Miami Vice was shot and the way it looked on dvd and on tv this is the best its ever looked.

Product arrived in three days, It was packaged well with no signs of damage. The box set is as it looks in the picture, five hard plastic cases with four discs inside. Very well protected no damage to box, cases or discs. As far as picture/sound, some night scenes a bit grainy but adjusted TV picture and its all but gone. Sound is a bit low for some dialogue but still very good. We're happy with purchase and are continuing to enjoy the show.

Very stylized series. Okay, so the acting lags a bit but the music, attire and Don Johnson will keep you watching. Captures an era exceptionally well. I agree with many other reviews that say the first 3 seasons are keepers while 4 & 5 show signs of funding cuts in all departments. Still, we had many hours of entertainment from this set. Turn up the volume and enjoy a blast from the past.

Watching this really brings me back to the mid eighties in all it's splendour. This was groundbreaking TV at the time, the writing and production values hold up quite well to today's standards. Picture quality of this set is quite good, even though it's in 1:33 full frame. Sound is pretty good, with remixes into 5.1 quite convincing at times. The music is terrific, as this has always been a hallmark virtue of Miami Vice. I've noticed almost none of the audio complaints of other reviewers. Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe the 5.1 mix doesn't have the audio problems of the other audio options. All in all, this is very entertaining, groundbreaking TV, and with 5 full seasons here, it's also a very good value. Highly recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Miami Vice is finally on Blu-ray by Mill Creek Entertainment and it is a treat
Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2017
    Verified Purchase
Miami Vice is one my all time favorite shows and I was excited to see it come out on Blu-ray; I had been waiting for it for a long time. Miami Vice Blu-ray released by Mill Creek Entertainment is actually not as bad as it is on the reviews here. I own hundreds of Blu-ray titles and I also own all 5 seasons of Miami Vice on standard DVD so I think my review will be fair.

I just finished watching the season 1 disc 1. Blu-ray picture quality is excellent. People who complain about the picture quality may not have the best TV or the eye-sight. I cannot imagine a better picture quality than what is presented here. There are just a couple of scenes where the picture gets extremely grainy but they do not last very long (only about 5 seconds) and the picture goes back to crystal clear HD quality quickly. I will have to watch the standard DVD to compare those scenes; I wonder if they are also present on the standard DVD edition.

Audio: I have selected 5.1 and I have not experienced any of the audio problems that are mentioned although I had contacted Mill Creek Entertainment by email and asked for replacement discs even before I started watching the Blu-ray discs. They responsed the next day and said that I would receive the replacement discs in 5-6 weeks, I actually received them in just 4 days. I do think some of the audio problems could be stemming from the original film elements as I remember experiencing some weird audio issues on the standard DVD. I do trust that the replacement discs are fine (most reviewers here are happy with the replacement discs). If the new batch already took care of the audio issues, it would be nice if Mill Creek communicated that somehow -maybe with a note in the package- to eliminate the need to deal with replacement discs/requests.

Widescreen: Some reviewers complain about the presentation not being in widescreen. That is not a legitimate criticism as the show was never in widescreen format. And I don't think there is any need for it to be now. It is presented in its original aspect ratio.

Packaging is just alright. I am not entirely happy with the way the discs sit on top of each other but I do own other TV shows where the discs sit on top of each other. It is not ideal but if you handle them carefully, I think they won't cause any problems.

My biggest complain is that the Blu-ray does not have subtitles. I was thinking about taking off one star from my review because of that. Individual seasons of Miami Vice on Standard DVD do have subtitles. I am not sure why Mill Creek Entertainment left them out. Would it cost them a lot of money to include the subtitles?

As for the show itself, Miami Vice is probably the most stylized TV show ever made. The soundtrack is simply amazing and adds so much character to the show. I don't think there is any musical piece in the entire series that I do not love. Every song is spot on. In addition to the excellent soundtrack, the show is visually elegant, external scenes against the backdrop of Miami, wardrobes of Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas (which created a trend) and overall style of shooting the show is just awesome. I could watch the show over and over again just to listen to the soundtrack or watch the visual style. As for some criticism on the show, some episodes are not very compelling in terms of story telling, does not match the sophistication of the visual style and it has always bothered me the way the guys are shooting out in the open without cover and get shot easily and those shots do not look very realistic as you watch people getting shot close up but no blood.

Overall, I would highly recommend Miami Vice Blu-ray The Complete Series to any fan or a new comer who wants to explore the show. It may have its flaws but still a great purchase and worth it (if you consider individual seasons being priced around $25)
