"Read this important book to learn how cancer is an environmental, metabolic disease with many small causes that stack up—and what you can do to prevent or even reverse it."—Dave Asprey, New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Bulletproof Diet
The Optimal Terrain Ten Protocol to Reboot Cellular Health!
The Metabolic Approach to Canceroffers an innovative, metabolic-focused nutrition protocol that works. Naturopathic, integrative oncologist and cancer survivor Dr. Nasha Winters and nutrition therapist Jess Higgins Kelley have identified the ten key elements of a person’s “terrain” (think of it as a topographical map of our body) that are crucial to preventing and managing cancer. Each of the terrain ten elements—including epigenetics, the microbiome, the immune system, toxin exposures, and blood sugar balance—is illuminated as it relates to the cancer process, then given a heavily researched and tested, non-toxic and metabolic, focused nutrition prescription.
The ketogenic diet—which relies on the body’s production of ketones as fuel—is the centerpiece ofThe Metabolic Approach to Cancer. Further, Winters and Kelley explain how to harness the anticancer potential of phytonutrients abundant in low-glycemic plant and animal foods to address the 10 hallmarks of cancer—an approach Western medicine does with drug-based therapies.
The optimized, genetically-tuned diet shuns:
- Grains
- Legumes
- Sugar
- Genetically modified foods
- Pesticides
- Synthetic ingredients
The optimized, genetically-tuned diet emphasizes:
- Whole, wild foods
- Local
- Organic
- Ferments
- Heirloom
- Low-glycemic
Other components of their approach include harm-reductive herbal therapies like mistletoe (considered the original immunotherapy and common in European cancer care centers) and cannabinoids (which shrink tumors and increase quality of life, yet are illegal in more than half of the United States). Through addressing the ten root causes of cancer and approaching the disease from a nutrition-focused standpoint, we can slow cancer’s endemic spread and live optimized lives.

Review
“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is a terrific resource for anyone interested in treating cancer with natural therapies. This book is delightful and full of valuable information.”—Ann Fonfa, president, Annie Appleseed Project
The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, Dr. Nasha Winters and nutritionist Jess Higgins Kelley expose the inadequacies inherent in the entrenched model of conventional cancer care. Looking beyond the manifestations of a body out of balance, they open the reader’s eyes to the underlying epigenetic changes that contribute to the development and progression of this devastating disease. Also included here is a set of tools—including nutrition, lifestyle, and metabolic therapies—that address the root cause of the problem. This integrated approach offers an opportunity to bring body and mind back into balance."—Miriam Kalamian, author of Keto for Cancer
“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer explains why medicine has failed to find a single cure for cancer. Read this important book to learn how cancer is an environmental, metabolic disease with many small causes that stack up and what you can do to prevent or even reverse it. Taking control of your environment and your food gives you control over cancer! You’ll never look at sugar the same way again.”—Dave Asprey, New York Times bestselling author of The Bulletproof Diet; creator, Bulletproof Coffee
“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is a powerhouse of detailed information on how to prevent, manage, and treat cancer. How refreshing to see such a compilation of insight, structure, and sweeping scope, one that centers on the health of the entire individual, not just killing cancer cells alone. It is written in an intimate conversation style that comes from decades of deep personal experience, research, and genuine passion. It’s time to welcome a new gem to the universe of books on cancer.”—Travis Christofferson, author of Tripping over the Truth
“Dr. Nasha Winters and Jess Higgins Kelley have written an important book, The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, that can help cancer patients better manage their disease. Most cancers, regardless of cell or tissue origin, are now recognized as a single metabolic disease that feeds on fermentable fuels like the sugar glucose and the amino acid glutamine. Winters and Kelley provide cancer patients with logical, nontoxic, therapeutic strategies for starving cancer cells of their prime fuels while enhancing overall patient health. This book will be a valuable resource for all cancer patients and their oncologists.”—Thomas N. Seyfried, PhD, author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease
“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is the book I have been yearning for since my cancer diagnosis in 1989. I have been managing my cancer with nutrition and lifestyle, but my research has led to confusing and sometimes contradictory information. This book has everything I need to know in one place. I feel empowered with knowledge about what I can do and why it will make a difference. I want everyone touched by cancer to read this book.”—Jan Adrian, MSW, founder and director, Healing Journeys
The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, Dr. Nasha Winters and Jess Higgins Kelley take the adage ‘knowledge is power’ to a new level. The book is packed with science-backed, practical, and highly relevant information that could easily overwhelm the reader. But rest assured, in a very caring way the two authors make sure you learn how to set priorities, address the main areas of concern first, and make step-by-step improvements to your well-being. This book has the power to truly transform your health!”—Patricia Daly, author of The Ketogenic Kitchen

It is very helpful regarding causes of cancer and how to prevent but also deal with "the big C". Nasha is a solid writer and her personal experience is worth reading about. Overall the book is 9 out of 10. I made notes throughout it from cover to cover.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 2, 2022Verified PurchaseIf you want to prevent cancer or take the best steps known to halt it in its tracks, you should read this book. Written by a doctor who survived stage 4 ovarian cancer, it details her approach to doing just that. It explains what you should eat and not eat, do and not do, to protect yourself from this disease. I was making notes on just about every page. By the time I got to page 75 I ordered three more copies, one for my wife and one for each of my sons. For me this was a life changing book. If you read it, I am confident you will feel the same way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A game changer on a healing journey! (On any journey)
Verified PurchaseI've been on a healing journey with breast cancer for awhile now. I am one of many YOUNG women in a trend of cancer.
I have assembled my team using an integrative approach and tools from both conventional and alternative therapies. I have found the most hope, support and LIFE, within my naturopathic, functional and integrative doctor offices - which has made all the difference. Our bodies are ONE being - they are not compartmentalized. Cancer is a process and apart of a larger terrain. Cancer didn't just happen and it isn't going to heal fully without looking at the whole terrain that created the process that allowed it to grow in the first place.
I found this book and Dr Winters and Jessica's work a year and half into my journey. I have searched wildly for a root cause for my body's terrain issues because I knew I had to heal the root and reverse the cancering process to remain well.
This book and this work have been pivotal in my healing journey. It has changed the trajectory and completely solidified the intuitive knowing that I have always had - that the body has to heal as a whole. I knew I needed to do more than just kill cancer. If cancer is a "process" - then we have some power in that space to reverse the "process". In that one statement - rests a mountain of hope and possibilities.
I completed the terrain 10 questions and identified my weaknesses and started the process. I overhauled some thinking in regard to the ketogenic diet. The way keto is used therapeutically with this approach is SO VERY different from the mainstream keto diets. This is important to understand. The way food and diet is approached in this book - is clean, nutrient dense, and therapeutic. So put down your preconceived notions about what you "thought" you knew and read on and learn.
If you or someone has cancer - please read this book. If you are a human breathing - please read this book. We could turn the tsunami of the cancer trends around if people would look at their terrain BEFORE their body is in the full cancering process. We all have cancer in our bodies - but what we do and how we live will influence if we are cancering or NOT cancering within our terrain. Let that sink in a bit.
This book is easy to read and implement. It is not just well researched, but LIVED by Dr Winters who has been in the healing trenches herself for over 25 years after receiving a stage 4 diagnoses at 19. She hasn't just been a clinician, she has been walking her own healing and stopping her own cancering process. There is such power and hope there.
Both authors bring a wealth of rich knowledge from clinical application and real life experience. This book is a game changer. A HEALING PATH changer. It puts pieces together so you can address the underlying terrain and begin repairing what needs to be repaired. It opens up a dialogue between you and your body and allows you to advocate for yourself on one of the hardest journeys many of us will walk. The book is dripping with hope and that - in and of itself - is a vital therapy!
This approach has shifted my healing approach and strategy and given me tools that had been missing.
On every healing journey there are defining moments - the kind that draw a line in the sand and change everything into a "before and after". This book and this work and approach - has been one of those moments for me.
Buy several copies and read and implement for yourself and family first. Then pass them out to anyone you care about. And to those in the healing trenches with cancer. We have to shift the cancer tends! And it starts with taking care of our terrain!! Cancer doesn't just happen, it's a process and we CAN intervene in the process! I am living proof of that!
Fingers crossed this will come out in a audible version soon :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed with this book. Authors know their stuff
Verified PurchaseI don't have cancer but I have another health issue and am planning on attending naturopath school , so I'm always interested in reading more about natural medicine.
I've read over a hundred books on health and natural medicine and this one stands out, first of all because it's so comprehensive and well researched. Most natural health books just go into the usual stuff (nutrition, sleep, stress, etc) but after having read tons of them I can see they're mostly carbon copies of one another. This one is incredibly detailed and gave me ideas for improving health naturally that I hadn't come across elsewhere. To give one example, I didn't know that modern clothes may be causing skin cancer because of all the chemicals in them.
The only thing that I felt was missing is the idea that different cancers respond to different diets. This is a theory developed by Dr Francis Pottenger and Dr Ernst Gellhorn and further developed in the 1960s by Dr William Kelly and later used by Dr Nicolas Gonzalez, to great effect. Those with soft issue/immune cancers do better on an animal protein heavy diet, which suppresses the immune system. Like autoimmune patients, those cancer patients developed cancer because their immune systems are too active. If you have an immune cancer, you don't want to be revving up your immune system. But those with solid tumours do better on a vegetarian diet with a bit of meat/fish and need to rev up their immune systems. Dr Nicolas Gonzalez had many patients with advanced immune cancers who have lived for many years (often decades) on that diet. I know his system works because I have an autoimmune disease that has dramatically improved on a meat-heavy diet, specifically designed to suppress the immune system.
