Bong Joon Ho blows up the police thriller in his breakthrough second feature

Based on the true story of a serial killer

In his breakthrough second feature, Bong Joon Ho explodes the conventions of the policier with thrillingly subversive, genre-defying results.

Based on the true story of a string of serial killings that rocked a rural community in the 1980s, Memories of Murder stars New Korean Cinema icon Song Kang Ho as the local officer who reluctantly joins forces with a seasoned Seoul detective (Kim Sang Kyung) to investigate the crimes—leading each man on a wrenching, yearslong odyssey of failure and frustration that will drive him to the existential edge.

Combining a gripping procedural with a vivid social portrait of the everyday absurdity of life under military rule, Bong fashions a haunting journey into ever-deepening darkness that begins as a black-comic satire and ends as a soul-shattering encounter with the abyss.

Director-Approved Special Edition Features

  • New 4K digital restoration, supervised by cinematographer Kim Hyung Ku and approved by director Bong
  • Three commentaries featuring Bong, members of the cast and crew, and critic Tony Rayns
  • New interview with Bong
  • New interview with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro
  • Deleted scenes, a student film by Bong, and more

Why is it the black case and not the clear criterion standard case? Why is there a missing essay pamphlet that should accompany the DVD? And noticed the text at the back lower credits are blurry like it’s a bootleg criterion version of this film. Not happy at all that now I have to hunt for the pamphlet and buy a different case as this black case are the cheap version where it can crack the DVD when taking it out.

Bought this because I liked this director from South Korea. Really good movie. One thing about being old and needing subtitles, you can branch out and watch more foreign films. Came fast, excellent condition.

This is not how police procedure traditionally works. well not in North America I think.
beating up the suspect to get information is not the norm.
but thing that strikes me is there’s no happy ending here like you get from Hollywood movie even.
if it’s a true story. like this is. I’ll tell you it started with chaos and it ran rampant throughout the whole
movie. from the kid who was mocking the detective right down to the rest of the investigating team.
this is like a descend into a black comedy of horrors. no wonder he (killer) thrive so long.

The restoration for the sound is better than the film transfer. I expected a lot more in the quality. The colours appear muted (beyond the actual look for the movie) and the pictures are too high in contrast. But maybe I'm tripping??! Feel free to educate me if I'm wrong. Movie is still 5/5 tho.

In September 2019, Lee Chun-jae, who was imprisoned for life in prison for another crime, was identified as a suspect when it matched the DNA left on the victim's skirt.

Later, in 2019, Lee Chun-jae was caught and testified that he saw the movie Memories of Murder in prison. Before Lee Chun-jae was caught, Yoo Young-cheol who was a seiral killer himself had said that the Hwasung serial killer was either dead or in prison. A murderer comparable to the Hwasung serial killer is addicted to killing and cannot stop killing, but the logic that the murder didn't happen was that the killer was dead or in prison. Serial killers know the minds of serial killers.
