I only found out recently how well pour-overs work. I didn't want to fill counter space with a coffee-maker or have to clean it. I bought a pod coffee machine and returned it. I also have a Hario V60 (glass) which I prefer to the Melitta. I wanted a spare in case mine breaks. But the Hario went up in price $15 since my first purchase a few months ago and I refuse to pay $35 for it. Also the Melitta filters are cheaper and easy to find, even at Walmart. (I've tried the Melitta filters in the Hario V60 and they work but the Hario filters work better in the V60). So I bought the Melitta for $7.98 after reading lots of mostly positive reviews.

I only use a Tbsp of coffee per cup, so the water pours through quickly and makes for a fast and hot cup of coffee. I pour some of boiling water into the filter to preheat the cup and lower the filter taste. Add a bit of boiling filtered water onto the the grounds, cover and let it "bloom" for 30 seconds. Then fill it up with boiling water, cover, and repeat until the mug is full. OK I'm a bit of a purist so I weigh the coffee grounds but not enough of a purist to buy whole coffee beans and grind them. :)

Pros: It's fast and nice to have an opening to see whether your cup is full. (It drips through faster than the Hario V60 and I'm thinking this may detract from the flavor? But I like the speed). The plastic part at the bottom that fits into your mug doesn't extend down very far, so it won't stick into your coffee when it's nearly full, which could affect the flavor and/or add plastic chemicals to the coffee. (The plastic part on the bottom of the Hario V60 does extend further down into the cup and I have to lift it for the end of the brewing to keep it from going into the coffee when it's almost full). The Melitta manufacturer says it's BPA free and it's hard plastic so probably won't interfere much with coffee flavor or add too many chemicals. Convenient.. Easy to clean. Just rinse in hot water and let it drain. I don't believe in putting plastic into the dishwasher and there's no need to wash this in the dishwasher. I rinse it right away after use. Way cheaper than making coffee runs to Hortons or Starbucks plus the gas and time. Could easily be used at the office. It makes me happy.

Cons: The top has a slight angle to it. I put a small plate over the top while the coffee drips to keep it hot and I can still do this, but I wonder if the plate will slip off one day. I prefer glass pour-over but: pod coffee is in plastic containers. Drip coffee machines have a plastic basket that the filter goes into. So I compromised on the BPA-free plastic. Melitta didn't need to put openings on both sides. One side would still let us see if the cup is full and retain more heat. And the opening could be smaller.

Overall I'm quite happy with the Melitta - good value for the money.

I picked up one of these simply to try single pour over vs other single serve options or using a French Press as it is a very economically priced unit. After spending some time with it since single pour over have become my go to brewing method with a notable increase/change in flavour. #2 cone filters fit well, however I am also using other sizes with some strategic folding no problem. Wetting the filter inside the cone helps keep it in place till you have the coffee grounds and water flowing.

I own three of these now and have had no issues whatsoever. Cleaning is a bit difficult due to the ridges but a small brush solves that and due to the paper filters any residue does not build up too quickly. However it is much simpler and quicker to clean than a French Press. Also they are top rack dishwasher safe and that works too.

I recommend checking out a quick video on using a pour over if you have not done so, but generally it is a simple process.
