4.0 out of 5 stars Good Android Head Unit - couple of installation issues to work through
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2024
    Verified Purchase
I installed the new Android head unit in my 2016 Subaru Outback and had to work through a couple of unexpected issues. I had emailed Mekede when I placed the order asking what was needed to connect the factory USB ports. Cheney responded that I would need usb adapter ASIN :B0B8VSQSKF. I ordered a RED WOLF Car Radio Factory USB Port Retention Cable (search 鶹 for B0B8VSQSKF ).

The installation was fairly easy. Once the wiring connections were made I powered the unit up and connected to Carplay. I removed the mic capsule from the housing of the included mic, wrapped in foam and installed in overhead console in place of the oem mic. The mic has good call quality.

In further checking unit operation I ran into a couple of problems:

First, I had connected the Red Wolf usb adapter cable to USB 1 on the radio and the dual Subaru ports did not work. When reconnected to USB 2 on the radio, both oem ports worked fine (they show as USB 4 on the head unit) as did USB 1 which I dropped down beside the console.

Second, when I checked the radio, there was no reception on AM even though multiple strong stations are nearby. FM reception was good in comparison as I could pick up several stations. I swapped emails with Mekede (Cheney) regarding the issue and he offered to pay for or send me an add-on car antenna to resolve the issue. In further investigating the radio issue, I discovered a couple of problems with the Mekede wiring harness. 1) The 10-pin connector (connects to i35 factory plug) does not have a wire connected to pin #8 which is the power lead to the Subaru antenna preamp. 2) The antenna plug has a single Fakra connector only connects to one of the two factory antennas (the Subaru antenna connector is dual Fakra).

To add power to the antenna preamp, I was able to remove the yellow wire/connector pin from the extra harness included with the head unit (use a small screw driver to release the pin). I marked the yellow wire with a black marker to match the factory color code (Yel/Blk) to the preamp and inserted the pin/wire into pin #8 position on the connector. After connecting this wire to the blue antenna power lead on the head unit, the radio came alive and I could receive numerous AM & FM stations.

To improve reception further I utilized a YONGJIANGXIA Antenna Adapter for Toyota Lexus Car Stereo Car Audio Parts TO-06D (鶹) which is a Motorola plug to dual Fakra connector that mates with the factory antenna plug (paralleling both factory antennas to the radio antenna connector).

Overall, I am very pleased with the head unit, but only giving 4-stars due to having to resolve these unexpected problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great unit, great support

My stock unit in my 2018 Legacy started pressing buttons by itself, so I had to replace it.

I came across this unit and it's a great replacement. It's basically an Android tablet that runs Android Auto and CarPlay. The screen is much bigger and it runs much smoother than the stock unit. Once you get it hooked up, all of the steering wheel controls work, you just have to program them in the settings.

The real value though is Cheney. He is extremely help and responsive with any issues you might have with the unit. You can reach him via email and WhatsApp. Highly recommend just for him because he was great.

Some things I had to figure out the hard way that might help people in the future:
    - There are two wiring harnesses. If your reverse camera doesn't work, use the other one.
    - The fan is powered by the RCA plugs that go into the back of the unit if you're looking where to plug it in
    - Make sure to remove the black box and gray box in the stock head unit fixture to you can put them in your new setup
    - I put the new head unit in and my car wouldn't leave Park and the EyeSight system stopped working. This is because I disconnected the gray box and did not plug it back in.
    - After that, the audio from my front speakers wouldn't work. This is because I had to plug the black box back in.

Hope this helps, and thanks again Cheney!

Bought this item, the Installation wasnt too difficult but it definitely wasnt easy as the instructions were not very intuitive. When I got it plugged in, it worked okay, as it turned on and all the apps seemed to work fine, but I noticed immediately that the sound quality got much worse than my stock radio. I couldn't turn it up and loud without the music starting to crackle, especially with hip/hop or music with more base. I tried to program my steering wheel controls and the software did not work at all, so I couldn't really program my steering wheel like I wanted to. Then, when I started driving, the radio kept randomly losing power and turning off, then turning back on and reconnecting after 45 seconds. So I kinda got frustrated and ended up buying and iDoing radio as a replacement, and it was like night and day. The iDoing radio looks almost identical but I had none of these problems; never loses power, audio quality actually increased over my stock radio, steer wheel controls work, and installation was easier (less adapters). Long story short, if you are going to get an aftermarket radio for your subaru, just get the iDoing one and save time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great on my 2018 Subaru legacy

I got this for my Subaru because of the delaminating screen issues.
I have been able to get everything working. Read other reviews here.
They talk about the duel antenna plug you need to buy. And the USB plug to get the factory plugs connected. Also, the screen material sucks really bad. Just touching it scratches. Can’t stress it enough that you must must must get a glass screen protector at the same time. I didn’t. And regretted it so much I returned the unit and started over. Second time around I installed the screen protector before installing it in the car. It was easier that way too. The glass screen protector feels much better. Your finger glides on the screen and no scratches.
Order them at the same time.

Then their are two tricky things you need to do, but no cutting or splicing.

For the back up camera. One of the new harnesses that come with the radio has a male yellow RCA plug. Another harness that plugs into a different spot also has a yellow RCA plug but it’s female. Plug those RCA plugs together for the camera.

The Subaru’s antenna has a power booster. The included harnesses are not pinned out correctly to supply the power needed. Look for the other reviewers post with his picture. You will not have any signal strength for radio if you don’t do this. If you don’t buy that new harness I mentioned above you will only have FM no AM. When you find you don’t have any radio signal. You’ll need to do this yellow wire swap I write about below.

You only need to remove the yellow wire and pin from a plug on the supplied harness that’s not used in your application on your radio. It’s part of the harness that is being used, but it’s a plug off of it that’s doesn’t get anything plugged into it. You’ll find it. Find the plug that you are using that matches the other reviewers picture. Insert that pin in the correct spot in the plug being used. It will match up to a yellow wire from the car side. The trick is knowing how to remove the pin without damaging it. Then just insert it into that correct spot on the plug that is being used. It’s the 12 volts your antenna booster needs.
If you do it like that you don’t need to cut any wires.

After that you need to explore all the settings. you have a lot of options to make the display what you want when you turn the key. I have an iPhone and use Waze. It can have it set to wirelessly work and open carplay automatically.
The radio is basically an android tablet. I don’t have one and am not familiar with a tablet at all, so it was a bit of a learning curve for me setting the radio display and options up the way I like. The sound system has multiple equalizers and adjustments. I was able to make it sound really good. The display is sharp and crisp. The back up lines in the camera do not respond to the steering wheel, but the lines themselves has adjustments. The picture is just as nice as the factory radio. It took me some time playing with everything. I’ll probably tweek things some more. Fun playing. Also, you get google and can Surf internet while driving. You can watch Netflix movies while driving. You can down load other apps and use. So far I found I have to have my iPhone physically connect thru a USB port to get the internet. But carplay is wireless. If I was to do it over, I would buy the next model up with a bit better memory. But so far I haven’t tried to upload any music so not sure if I need more memory. I stream everything off 鶹 music. Another app you just download into the radio.
