    Bought these military version 5654W tubes for a new preamp that came with stock Chinese 6J1 tubes - they are fine in audio equipment, but the vintage GE tubes are superior in the areas of imaging, retrieval of low-level details and soundstage depth/clarity. I made the same tube substitution with a ChiFi DAC/HP Amp a few years ago, and they did audibly improve the sound in the areas mentioned, although it is a subtle difference that casual listeners would likely not hear. Where it really makes a difference is with a pair of high quality headphones or IEMs, or good studio monitors in a near-field listening set-up. The tubes arrived a couple weeks before the preamp, and I haven't yet swapped them in. I will update my review once I have installed the GE tubes and let them 'burn-in' for a few days. Tubes like this are one of the few positive remnants of the Cold War - even vintage Soviet military vacuum tubes from the 60s to 70s are good for preamps and front-stages in all kinds of amplifiers.

    I honestly think some of the “critical” reviews came from competitors who sell these tubes @ an insane price/markup. These seem to be original NOS tubes…. pins are oxidized ((as you would expect with true NOS tubes from the 70s/80’s)). The print seems legit too. I own several sets purchased years ago from 100% legit sources, and these seem to be identical.

    The boxes are definitely not original ((they say “Made in China”)).

    I’ll eventually run some tests with my multimeter & use my buddies tube tester - if anything seems off, I’ll update this review to let you guys know. But I’m pretty sure they’re good!!

    I bought these to try on my Douk Audio ST-01. I could only compare the sound against a set of 6AG5 tubes that came with my amp. I paired the amp with a set of Fluance SX6 speakers. In comparison, I found music played with the 5654 tubes had slightly more emphasis on the mid range and a felt more flat in the highs and lows. Therefore, I found vocals stood out a little more but was less dynamic overall. Regardless, they still served my system well with excellent sound.

    the mid was way more muffed compare to the stock one. the crispy high was gone too.
