Mantis 4222 Tiller Aerator Attachment
Description
Cuts into the soil under your lawn with four sets of tempered steel “knives,” to permit easy absorption of water, oxygen and nutrients. Tines cut 4 hairline slits roughly 2 1/2 inches apart and 1 1/2 inches deep. Perfect to use in compact, clay soil. Aerate before overseeding or spot seeding your lawn. Reduce soil compaction to let in air and water, which promotes the activity of beneficial soil microorganisms, and encourages healthy lawns. Lawn care attachments are not recommended for surface-rooted grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, and St. Augustine) because it can damage the root system.

So far so good. I got this to dethatch and aerate some spots in my yard before resending. Upon using it I realized it is absolutely perfect for reseeding thin spots. I realized right away to throw the seed down then run over it with this once or once then crossways once. Really delivers an ideal seed bed for grass and running over the seed works it in real nicely. I then threw straw down over the worked ground. I also sliced several spots in my yard that were thin or held water. As far as those go time will tell. It's rained like twice and the slices aren't really visible anymore so I'm anxious to see if the grass looks better than the surrounding areas or not and if the places that held water before tend to shed it better or not. I'm mostly just stoked with how it works it for reseeding. It doesn't just annihilate the yard it just kinda tosses some dirt up and cuts slices. But I like it so far for such a small investment.
5.0 out of 5 starsTurns Your Mantis into an Small Space Aerator

When mounted on your Mantis, these tines create an excellent small space aerator. I have a plug aerator that I pull behind my lawn tractor, but small irregularly shaped parts of the lawn are impossible to get to with the pull behind plug aerator. These tines actually cut small trenches in the soil and bring soil up to the top of the ground. I cut the trenches first, thrown the grass seed on by hand, and then manually rake the soil to cover the seeds. It works better than I expected.

I just called the Mantis customer service number because I had a technical question. When I was on the line I mentioned I was looking forward to receiving the aerator and the tiller was great, it cut through my Bermuda no problem.
The lady was very nice and said wait you have Bermuda? I said yes. She said do NOT use the aerator on Bermuda. And also do not use on St. Augustine, Zoyzia, and Centipede grasses. The way it works it will cut the roots and kill the lawn. WOW....This information was not up on their website nor on 鶹's.
To be fair to 鶹 I am sure if the info was something Mantis put on their website it would have gotten here. Anyhow this is a well deserved 1 star because I could have killed my lawn. Very irresponsible for Mantis to not put the information on their website (their CS rep said she would ask them to put it on the website). Also one of the big reasons we got the tiller was because it also had an aerator attachment. Had Mantis been up-front on the aerator we might not have gotten the tiller.
That being said I have not had a chance to use the tiller fully because I just received it, but from my trial, it was very impressive. Cut through Bermuda like butter on the lowest power setting. But the aerator....very dangerous not to let people know. And now I have the hassle of returning it although 鶹 is great in that regard. Still better if I had never ordered it in the first place.
Also I did some research. Slit aeration which this is, is not nearly as good as core aeration. I was trying to avoid renting from a home improvement store...but it looks like that is what I will be doing now. Thankfully though I will have a lawn to aerate. Almost lost it because Mantis did not provide needed information.
