I sometimes show up to work early just to mess with people or chill in the staff room. But recently, I've been bringing the Manga Guides with me (A whole bunch of them, sometimes I rotate, sometimes I don't.) Recently, I've been bringing the Manga Guide to Calculus (This book!) and I only have positive things to say about it.
First of all, this entire series is simply amazing. It teaches you so much stuff in a short amount of time and has stories and pretty artwork to keep you interested enough to continue and stick with it. So, if you're motivationally challenged, this should be enough to keep you going.
Now, the ugly. You shouldn't be an absolute beginner. And by absolute, I mean: Never took math in highschool. Quite frankly, This book is probably ideal for people who have a Grade Ten highschool Math education. Anything lower may have some difficulty, especially since the fundamental concepts (such as functions, slopes, quadratic/logarithmic/exponential/reciprocal functions, etc.) may need a bit more of an introduction (this one covers simple fundamentals in roughly 30 or so pages, but doesn't go over very specific types of functions.)
So, if you have at least grade ten highschool done, you're all set to start learning! And oh my god, this does an amazing job of teaching you. In 200 pages, this thing is JAM PACKED with information. The manga aspect isn't too distracting, incorporates the concepts well and simply just keeps the flow going. Maybe the endings are a bit generic or slightly unresolved (as seen in the Linear Algebra book,) but it's still an overall enjoyable experience to read these.

Noriko is just getting started as a junior reporter for the Asagake Times. She wants to cover the hard-hitting issues, like world affairs and politics, but does she have the smarts for it? Thankfully, her overbearing and math-minded boss, Mr. Seki, is here to teach her how to analyze her stories with a mathematical eye.
In The Manga Guide to Calculus, you'll follow along with Noriko as she learns that calculus is more than just a class designed to weed out would-be science majors. You'll see that calculus is a useful way to understand the patterns in physics, economics, and the world around us, with help from real-world examples like probability, supply and demand curves, the economics of pollution, and the density of Shochu (a Japanese liquor).
Mr. Seki teaches Noriko how to:
–Use differentiation to understand a function's rate of change
–Apply the fundamental theorem of calculus, and grasp the relationship between a function's derivative and its integral
–Integrate and differentiate trigonometric and other complicated functions
–Use multivariate calculus and partial differentiation to deal with tricky functions
–Use Taylor Expansions to accurately imitate difficult functions with polynomials
Whether you're struggling through a calculus course for the first time or you just need a painless refresher, you'll find what you're looking for in The Manga Guide to Calculus.
This EduManga book is a translation from a bestselling series in Japan, co-published with Ohmsha, Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan.

Review
"The Manga Guide to Calculus would make an excellent supplement for anyone seeking a firmer intuitive grasp of the subject. It is entertaining, and it does an excellent job of exploring the meaning and relevance of calculus to the physical world."

- Reviewed in Canada on January 20, 2012I've been a fan of the Manga Guide series for some time but none have proven as useful and as necessary as the two math guides, The Manga Guide to Calculus and The Manga Guide to Statistics. To be fair, I come from a physics background so I have a bias towards the quantitative, but I'll never refer back to the Manga Guides to Physics, Electricity, or the Universe the way I have read and re-read these two.
This isn't a knock on those other titles, which are excellent. But somehow these subjects and this format are just a perfect fit for each other. I need a quick refresher on a particular technique, it's explained clearly and a small number of sample questions are given. For someone who knows the material and needs a refresher, these guides can't be beat. For students studying them for the first time, I would pair these slim guides with a thicker textbook or problem set for practice (the one thing these guides don't have) for an unbeatable combination.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 27, 2021Verified PurchaseI bought this book for 15 yo son. I thought this may introduce 'calculus' to a child in a relatable fashion. NO. Absolute NO. The author tries to make a smoothie ... by opening a blender, pour a cup of wine, put two frogs and scoops of equation-vomit, blend ... pour it in a cup, keep in freezer for a min .. and serve it as smoothie. I'm an engineer who is exposed to calculus. I read 2 chapters, I decided not to give this book to my son. A non- coherent mix of some comic drawings ... interspersed with jumbled equations. The mathematics association of America says "firmer intuitive grasp of the subject. It is entertaining ...". Neither 'firmer grip' nor 'entertaining' ....
Returning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buen libro
Verified PurchaseEl contenido del libro vale la pena. Lo que no me gusto es la calidad del papel y si fuera a color seria excelente.
