A Man & His Watch: Iconic Watches and Stories from the Men Who Wore Them (A Man & His Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
鶹
—T: The New York Times Style Magazine
"There are a bunch of beautifully illustrated watch books out there, butA Man & His Watchby Matt Hranek is more than that. It speaks to the nature of watches as deeply personal items."
—Gear Patrol, Coffee Table Books Our Staff Can’t Live Without
Paul Newman wore his Rolex Daytona every single day for 35 years until his death in 2008. The iconic timepiece, probably the single most sought-after watch in the world, is now in the possession of his daughter Clea, who wears it every day in his memory. Franklin Roosevelt wore an elegant gold Tiffany watch, gifted to him by a friend on his birthday, to the famous Yalta Conference where he shook the hands of Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill. JFK’s Omega worn to his presidential inauguration, Ralph Lauren’s watch purchased from Andy Warhol’s personal collection, Sir Edmund Hillary’s Rolex worn during the first-ever summit of Mt. Everest . . . these and many more compose the stories of the world’s most coveted watches captured in A Man and His Watch. Matthew Hranek, a watch collector and NYC men’s style fixture, has traveled the world conducting firsthand interviews and diving into exclusive collections to gather the never-before-told stories of 76 watches, completed with stunning original photography of every single piece. Through these intimate accounts and Hranek’s storytelling, the watches become more than just timepieces and status symbols; they represent historical moments, pioneering achievements, heirlooms, family mementos, gifts of affection, and lifelong friendships.

Review
—T: The New York Times Style Magazine
“Awesome. . . . Contains dozens of beautifully photographed watches. The real joy, though, is found in the stories that unfold about each one.”
—G.dz
“A grand testimony to the idea that, rather than just telling the time, a watch can serve as a marker of a particular moment or memory. . . . Sumptuously photographed.”
ʴǰٱ.dz
“The perfect holiday gift . . . this elegant book is a celebration of the longstanding love affair between a man and the clock on his wrist.”
—Jetset magazine
“The watch through Matt Hranek’s lens is much more than a time-telling device; it’s a vehicle through which the men in A Man and His Watch tell their tales of achievement, love, and loss. This may be the first book to unlock not only why wristwatches remain the subject of such attention today, a generation after their purpose was lost to PCs and smartphones, but also why we began to cherish them so much in the first place.”
—Benjamin Clymer, founder and executive editor of Hodinkee
“Great watches not only tell time—they also tell stories. Matt Hranek has assembled a wonderful collection of stories and images representing a diverse and fascinating group of horological devotees.”
—Jay McInerney, author of Bright Lights, Big City
“A wonderful meditation not just on watches, but on how men use them to better understand their fathers, their families, and ultimately their own place in the world.”
—Gary Shteyngart, author of Little Failure and Super Sad True Love Story
“This book, naturally, is about remarkable watches. But it’s really about why objects have meaning—who made them and why. Together it’s a collective history about what we inherit, what we pass on, and the stories we tell that become more important over time.”
—David Coggins, author of Men and Style
“A mechanical watch consumes no power and possesses no energy except that which you bestow upon it by winding it or simply moving. And in return it becomes your most trusted companion, allowing you to navigate the glorious pathway that is life with unfailing precision. With A Man and His Watch, Matt Hranek brings to life the ineffable bond we make with the amazing machine with a heartbeat that lives on our wrist. And I can’t think of a better person to chronicle this.”
—Wei Koh, founder of The Rake

The stories are interesting and heartwarming. It’s also a lovely book to display on a coffee table or bookshelf. All round, a great buy.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2025Verified PurchaseFor any watch nerd new or old to the subject it’s a must have. Don’t know anyone in the watch community that hasn’t got a copy of this. I use this for giving context to me pictures when I photograph my own watches. Great visuals, good feel to the book. Plenty to learn and scrutinise with friends on which might be your favourite and why. Good book.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 19, 2024Verified PurchaseMust have for any watch and history amateur.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 12, 2025Verified PurchaseThis book is more than just a book, it’s a meditation guide for me. Every morning, while working out, I read this between sets. I wish it was longer. I hope a second instalment comes out.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 5, 2020Verified PurchaseNice quality coffee table book, and a good gift for watch lovers. It comes in a nice minimalist sleeve and is a decent size. I expected it to have a bit more focus on the watches but it more so focuses on the stories of the men who owned them. Regardless, I am satisfied with the purchase and hope the recipient enjoys!

- Reviewed in Canada on January 10, 2024Verified PurchaseI ordered this book for my watch loving husband and it was hit! Bonus, it makes a beautiful coffee table book as well. I myself have even taken some time to read some of these watch stories and it is really well done and very interesting.

This is an every watch collector's library bookshelf essential. Matt Hranek has created a unique platform in horological literature. He has very succinctly related every historical watch in the book to personal anecdotes of a lifetime. From the Waltham Trench of 1914, to the Charles Lindbergh's Longines of 1927, designed by Lindbergh himself with navigation, to the Rolex experimental watch worn by Sir Edmund Hillary to Mt. Everest, every watch in the book offers an unique anthology with a veritable degree of pride and ownership. A highly recommended book to own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction for beginners in the watch world
Verified PurchaseA nice introduction to wrist watches, but this book has a lot of mistakes, for example:
Page 82: Edmund Hillary wore a Rolex on the top of Everest.
In fact, since 1933 Rolex sponsored the Himalayan expeditions and they used the right words, Rolex worn TO the top of Mt Everest. New Zealander Edmund Hillary carried a 33mm SMITHS wrist watch ON top of Everest. This British-made SMITHS can be seen in the British Science museum in London.
Page 103: Omega Alaska Project Speedmasterwas never used in space
In fact, in 1977 the Omega Alaska II Project Speedmaster was worn during Russian Soyuz 25 & Soyuz 26 missions to Salyut-6 space station. It was even used during a spacewalk in July 1978 !
Page 104: Schirra's Speedmaster was the first watch in space (1962)
In fact, in April 1961 Yuri Gagarin wore the first watch in space, a Russian-made 17 jewels Shturmanskie
