A dead body is one mess she can’t clean up on her own.

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanour has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black. But will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

Both a Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit,
The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

Praise for
The Maid:

“Excellent and totally entertaining . . .the most interesting (and endearing) main character in a long time.”
—Stephen King

“An endearing debut. . . . Prose threads a steady needle with the intricateplotting, the locked-room elementsof the mystery and especially Molly’s character. The reader comes to understand Molly’s worldview, and to sympathize with her longing to be accepted—a quest that gives
The Maid real emotional heft.”
—The New York Times

“Prose delves into the issues—of difference, of justice—with a touch as gentle as the humour. . . . Adebut novel that seems to fall into the category of overnight success.”
—Toronto Star

“Devotees of cozy mysteries, rejoice: Nita Prose’s debut,
The Maid, satisfies on every level—from place to plot to protagonist. . . . The delight of reading The Maid lies partly in watching a hectic cast of characters unravel . . . as the crime is properly solved. It also lies in seeing Molly learn that thinking differently does not equal giving up friendship or high standards. What begins as a sprightly murder mystery turns into a meaningful, and at times even delicate, portrait of growth.”
NPR

—Lisa Jewell, bestselling author of Then She Was Gone

“A murder mystery set in a luxury hotel,
The Maid is equal parts fun and intrigue. Prose nails the voice of her narrator, Molly the Maid, who reminded me of Eleanor Oliphant with her shrewd observations and inadvertent humor. I felt like I was leaving a friend behind when I turned the last page. A supremely clever and heartwarming story that is not to be missed.”
—Stephanie Wrobel, bestselling author of Darling Rose Gold

SHEMAZING

The Maid is a simple, cozy mystery, reminiscent of the board game “Clue.” What elevates this story is the charm and heart of the leading character who bumbles her way through a web of lies and deception, leading to an utterly satisfying ending. If you enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, make a point to seek out this engaging gem.”

The Maid. . . . Prose has created a complex and human character in Molly. This is a great story from a unique perspective. Molly has her own way of looking at the world, largely influenced by her grandmother bringing her up. Her no-nonsense approach to hard work, honesty and taking pride in her job is refreshing in today's climate of people being satisfied with just doing the minimum. In contrast to today's society of professional victimhood, Molly never complains, takes care of herself and triumphs in the face of adversity. I have the advantage of reading the first and second books as I write this review, and I can say without reservation these two books are some of the best books I have read this year.

I was surprised find what this book is all about! It was certainly different as one would expect!
The only downside I could find was that, although well written. For
Me it became predictable as I read on!

The story itself was interesting. I didn't care for the character of Molly. Though I appreciate the OCD part of her, she seemed at times so dense. I skimmed through the investigation. The last few chapters which were quite interesting, with all the plot twists and turns, criminal elements exposed. I can't agree, though, with Molly's thinking that murder is okay under the right circumstances.

I read THE MAID by Nita Prose in February and I think it is the perfect character-driven Cozy Mystery to give to my mom & my mother-in-law for Mother's Day. ❤

If you took the mathematical equation of Amelia Bedelia + Angela Landsbury + a sprinkle of Christopher Boone (from The Curious Incident of the Night-Time) = Molly Gray in THE MAID.

The story is full of mystery, humour, an upscale hotel, a murder, and a whole lot of cleanliness. It is a novel that will make you smile and allow you to escape the world-that-is-on-fire, even if only for a few hours.

It also has bonus quotes from Molly's Gran, that every Grandma has shared with their children and grandchildren through the years. How Molly interpret's her Gran's rules provides the reader with loads of humour. If you love reading Cozy Mysteries, this book is for you.

Book was a bit smaller then traditional book size but not the size of a pocket book.
But as far as the story. Amazing I loved it so much. Mystery, drama, romance. I loved it so much I read the rest of the series just waiting on the 4th book coming soon.

I liked this story and I liked Molly's many quirks. I almost felt sorry for Molly because of the hard times she was having. I would read more from this author.

I found the character to be compelling, and could not stop reading after the first few chapters. Molly is clearly very intelligent, but sees things through a simpler worldview than most others. One of my favorite elements of the book is Molly's evolution from a simplistice right/wrong morality to a more nuanced understanding as she internalizes the lessons from the world around her.

Also interesting is that as a reader, I experienced much stronger emotions than Molly herself as it became clear what was happening to her while she did not understand. At the very end, however, it became clear that I had underestimated her just like the other characters in the novel.

The book keeps one's interest, as it slowly reveals information about the main character as she relates what she is doing and how she interacts with others.
At first she seem simple, then the realisation that she is autistic makes sense of everything.
A picture is drawn in a realistic way and the truth about characters is revealed during conversations between them and her. You find yourself willing her to realise the truth and not to be so literal.
It is a mystery story but the main enjoyment is following the story through her eyes.

What a great character Molly is! She has such precise thoughts and movements and reasons, and while many turn away from someone “on the spectrum,” she’s a delightful embodiment who pulls you in. I loved how her memories of Gran still influenced her, and especially when someone who could see her true character got to slam down one of her detractors. The mystery and plot were good, and the side characters were fully fleshed out. I’d like Mr Preston to be watching over me, and I’d take Juan Manuel home in an instant. Excellent book—give it a chapter or two and you’ll be hooked! Highly recommended.
