- Reviewed in Canada on May 23, 2019I like it that it is so quiet compared to my hanging chain drive opener.
I like it that the directions for installation were clear and easy to understand.
I like it that it lifts my 12 x 8 solid wood garage door with easy and the motor slows before door makes contact with the garage floor.
I like it that every time I enter the garage from the house the motion detector on the g door switch turns the light on automatically.
I could go on with all the other features this opener offer but it would spoil it for you.
If I could recommend something if you buy now... get the 282 thingy that ads MyQ internet link. IT gives you notifications on your phone that somebody just opened your G door and gives you capability to close and open the door from your phone. Love my Liftmaster, and highly recommend it to everyone

- Reviewed in Canada on December 27, 2019The worm gear inside the motor has a minor diameter around 4mm and snaps after a few years. The cheap chinese drivetrain in this thing is an embarrassment to good design.
I hope liftmaster fired the engineer behind this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Opener but a few things to know about installation.
Verified PurchaseA quality item all around but a few caveats for installation. Since this style opener rotates the jackshaft (the spring axle) and reduces spring tension for the closing cycle it is just the doors weight that moves it down. The opener does not apply any downward force. As others have mentioned if you set the door position too high, there's not enough downward force from the door at the start of the cycle. As a result the cable will go slack, the cable tension monitoring device will detect this and stop the opener. I tried raising the back ends of the door track to get more downward force early in the close cycle but it didn't help. My next step will likely be a set of "pusher" springs to help get the door started when closing. You may not have these problems if your door moves perfectly smooth especially near the top position buy mine binds a little in the track for some reason that I haven't been able to sort out. One other note, if you are ordering the 877MAX wireless keypad with this opener. Ignore the directions that come with the 877MAX when programming it and follow the directions that come with the opener. (UPDATE 8/2017 maybe not - see below) In fact, I removed the instruction decal that is attached to the inside cover of the 877MAX and wrote the correct instructions there with a sharpie so I would remember them if I needed to reprogram it. I was a little disappointed to find out that the sensors for the bottom of the track are sealed and so there's no way to open them up and detach the wire that comes with the sensor. I had already roughed in wire for the sensors inside my walls and had expected to be able to connect my wire directly to terminals on the sensors. Nope, I had to splice to the wire that comes with the sensor and now my install does not look as clean as I'd hoped. I ended up putting some of that split tubing used for bundling wires over the wire and splice and that helped things look better.
UPDATE 8/2017 My second Liftmaster 8500 install
I've just installed my second one of these and went thru a terrible hassle getting the up and down limits set. After moving the door up with the black button on the opener I would get down off the ladder and press the wired door control. At this point the door is supposed to start closing and you are supposed to stop it with either the black or yellow buttons. But it would stop before I could get up on the ladder and the light would flash 10 times which would indicate a problem with the door opening. ?? The manual says the fix is to reprogram the limits. Well that's what I'd been trying to do. I checked and rechecked everything including all the connections, the tension monitor, the reversing sensors etc and no go. I set the upper limit really low, like a couple feet off the floor (for a 12' high door) to make sure there was plenty of downward force from the weight of the door so the cable could not possibly go slack. At one point I had the door slowing down as it should when it's close to closing but this was happening with the door half closed. Something was clearly confused in the limit settings and I couldn't seem to get by it. What finally worked was to program the wireless remote and take it up the ladder with me so I after setting the upper limit with black button I could hit the wireless remote button and be right at the opener when it started down. That way I could stop the door with either the black or yellow button before it stopped on its own (which happened very quickly) for who knows what reason. That finally broke the logjam and I could get the door operational. Now on to the wireless keypad which turned out to be far more trouble than it should have. Following the instructions in the book and the flyer in the opener box did not work. No matter how many times I tried using the instructions in the book (the same procedure I used successfully to program the keypad on the Liftmaster 8500 I bought previously - see above) I could not get the keypad linked to the door. Finally on-line, from Liftmaster no less, I found this procedure which worked.
1. Press and hold # and * on the keypad until the keypad lights stop flashing
2. Press the LEARN button on the door control twice - red LED will light
3. Enter a 4 digit PIN on the keypad
4. Press and release ENTER on the keypad
5. Press 0 on the keypad.
This is still a great opener once it's working but come on Liftmaster, how about getting the right instructions in the box!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is what all garages should have!
Verified PurchaseIf you have a setup where this opener will work and you're even CONSIDERING buying it, I have 2 words for you: DO IT! This is one of the best purchases I have ever made in the way of home improvement, and at just under $300 it's a great deal in my opinion. I bought 2 of these units to replace a couple of older belt-drive models that were impossible to keep quiet. No amount of lubricating or adjusting the openers would keep the obnoxious squeaking & rattling from waking anyone in the 2 bedrooms which border the garage whenever the door is opened or closed. And they were $250 3/4 HP openers, so not some cheap junk units. I decided on these units for 3 reasons: 1) Free up ceiling space to install storage racks, 2) allow for remote controlling and monitoring doors, and 3) Lifetime warranty on the motor.
BEFORE BUYING you need to make sure that you have enough clearance both to the side and above where the shaft of your door is (you can mount it on either side). I've seen some homes where there is literally only a few inches of space between the door track and the wall or ceiling, and in this situations this won't work. The manual says you need at least 8" to the side of the shaft and 3" above it, but the more room the better.
I contemplated buying these for a while, with my only hesitation being the fact that I would need to run a bunch of wires to the front wall rather than using the existing opener location. It does require a power outlet at/near the front wall, and it also requires the wires for the opener switch and infrared eyes to be run to it. I was able to easily reroute the wires for the switch and eyes and run them down to the new mounting location, but I didn't really feel like doing a 120V run in the wall with a junction box, etc. So instead, I bought an thick 10 gauge extension cord and ran it up through the ceiling and over to the junction box where the old opener plugged in. I don't know if this is "to code" or not, but it works fine and I don't see it causing any problems.
Before installing, you need to follow the instructions and make sure your door is balanced properly and there are no repairs which need to be made. I went ahead and paid $75 for a company to come out and do a full inspection and tuneup, and in addition to that I decided to swap out the rollers to sealed nylon rollers (previously had metal).
The installation itself was fairly simple, it took me and a friend just over 30 minutes to install it! One person simply held the unit in place while I made sure it was properly aligned, then marked the spot on the wall and attached the mounting brackets to it, then connected all of the wires, installed the light where the old garage door opener was, and viola! Oh, and I also had to run the wire down to the deadbolt and install that. I really like the deadbolt feature since it prevents someone from reaching through the small gap between the door and wall and using something to pull the disengage handle to open the door.
This unit is WHISPER quite, I can't even hear it from inside the house if the door going into the garage is closed. I also hooked up the MyQ internet gateway, and I love being able to control and monitor the door from my phone. With always being in a rush in the morning to get out the door with 2 young kids, I can't tell you how many times I've had to double back to the house to make sure I had shut the garage door. Not anymore! I have it set to auto-close if left open, and I can also check the status from my phone and control it manually. And the extra space on the ceiling above the door has come in handy, I have installed a 2'x4' storage rack as well as a pull-down ladder to get into the attic above the garage. My only regret is that I didn't make the change sooner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome if you are looking for a quiet opener!!! UPDATE 7/9/2020
Verified PurchaseUpdate 7/9/2020: So, after 4 years the wall switch (885LM) has malfunctioned rendering the opener mostly useless. I can open and close by manually shorting the wires out but that's it, as all the RF is in the 885LM. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Liftmaster has acknowledged an issue with the switch and has a completely painless form on their website to request a free replacement with the updated model. I have continued to love the opener and just had to post here to recognize a company that really stands behind their products. Oh and as a side note, I added the internet gateway to this system a year or so ago and it has been a fantastic addition and saved us on multiple occasions.
Original Review:
Okay, so I've only had this unit installed for 1 day but it is incredible! We have our master bedroom above the garage and wanted to do what we could to reduce the opener noise and this fit the bill perfectly. We can still hear a little bit of noise from the door itself and the tracks (which are still attached to the ceiling joist) but it is very minimal compared to the old opener we had. I installed it myself (first garage door opener ever!) and it wasn't too difficult. I probably took longer than I should have but better safe than sorry. It probably ended up taking me what would amount to a full day including removal of the old opener, but I spread it across a weekend because I like sleeping in.
I will ding them on a couple minor things. As others have mentioned, they REALLY short change you on the insulated wire staples considering the amount of wire that needs to be run (as a side note, it would have been nice if the motion sensor had terminals instead of a molded wire since I probably could have re-used the existing wires). I ended up using standard staple gun staples which was actually a mistake. I didn't think it would be a problem but the insulation on these wires is pretty minimal and a standard T50 staple ended up shorting out my control wire in a few places. Luckily, the diagnostic lights were pretty helpful and I was able to track down the short and fix it pretty quickly. That was the only unforseen issue during the install and it was totally my fault for taking a shortcut (although had they included more insulated staples it may not have been an issue). My only other problem is that I found it difficult to identify a few of the screws. The instructions allow for a few different alternate screw usages and in some cases it didn't seem like they had the correct screws available. I think I figured it out but it could have been more clearly written.
As others have noted, this opener is slightly slower than the old chain-drive but it is actually kind of nice because it almost has a soft open and close. I haven't used any of the internet accessories or keypads so I can't speak to that, but I did find that if your garage ceiling is too low, they offer an accessory (480LM) that allows this unit to be offset by 10" in case that was a concern. All in all, I'm very impressed with the unit and it
does everything I need it to do. I'll update the review if I have any reliability issues but even if there are, I would bet they are install related since my garage door is not in the most amazing shape.
Oh, also I saw one review where they said the lock "sounds like a gunshot" and I have no idea what they are talking about. It must be installed improperly because mine barely makes any noise at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alternative to traditional garage door opener is GREAT for tight garage!
Verified PurchaseThis garage door opener is fantastic. I thought I could never have an garage door opener because our garage ceiling is low and there's almost no room between the door and ceiling. When I stumbled upon this opener and checked the space requirements, I had just enough room.
Installation was easy, but will take a little while. The sensors, cable safety, lock, control panel and light kit all need placement but came with plenty of wire. The instructions were excellent overall, a few details I missed and had to redo something, but that was my fault. Read them carefully. Overall, it took me about 3 hours from start to finish.
The programming was smooth and there are a number of features I really like, including the motion detector on the control panel and the blinking light when the garage door senses an obstruction.
I don't give five stars unless something is perfect, and the few things I didn't like we're some of the screws provided were cheap and began to round out while I tightened them by hand. The cords for the opener but more importantly light are woefully short. The light lenses seems flimsy and although the wireless control of it is very cool, it's not rated for LED bulbs, which seems silly. There is concern the bulbs will interfere with the wireless control.
Overall, it's only been used for a few days but seems excellent so far. I hope it lasts a long time. I would certainly buy another and/or recommend it to a friend. There is the additional functionality of the MyQ control system for other things through the car remote or maybe phone, but I haven't found any clear cut information about how it works and it's compatibility with other home products. If anyone from the Mfr. reads this, I am interested in this expansion and linking of technology, but someone needs to create a tutorial spelling out what you can do and can't do. I would hope it could be integrated into a large whole home system.
