Used it in Africa. The other reviews are accurate about it taking effort to suck the water through.

Life straw customer support horrible the straw begins to smell and even after following directions there is still some water inside that stays so you will be drinking mold eventually

It was quite difficult to drink, because of the filter in the straw (obviously understandable but annoying nonetheless). You also need to thoroughly wash this otherwise it smells.

My motivation for getting this LifeStraw Sip was as a highly portable emergency water source. I have a "Go Bag" I carry in my car with me. It has certain essentials which would allow you to increase the odds of survival in case something unexpected happens. It primarily focuses on providing shelter and warmth. Those things, plus water are the most important things to consider. It can be surprising with a little forethought exactly how compactly you can pack things which can literally save your life if you are "stuck in a snowbank".

Clean drinking water is often difficult to come by, and I don't only mean when you are stranded in a swamp someplace. There are many big cities around the world where the tap water is not safe to drink, especially if you are unaccustomed to the bio-flora which may be present. A good example I have personal experience with is in St. Petersburg, Russia. When I was traveling there back in the 1990s they had Giardia in the city water supply. If you drank that water in a few days, you would likely pay dearly. The same is more so probably in more locals than not around the world. Of course, the answer is bottled water, which is normally readily available. But that supply is far from a sure thing. That, or your being stranded in a swamp someplace is a good reason to have small highly compact and affordable personal drinking water filter.

This LifeStraw Sip is very well made. The tube is stainless steel. This is actually important as the filter inside much be rigidly supported. If it was flexed it can pull away from the sides and allow unfiltered water to pass unexpectedly. So, though plastic would be cheaper and just fine under most circumstances it is definitely not as durable. The mouthpiece and filter entry on the bottom are both silicone and can be removed easily for cleaning. When using it, the flow rate is good. But if it is dry the initial rate is reduced as the filter needs to get fully saturated. This is because you are pulling the water through it rather than pushing it. The air inside the actual filter membrane cavitates and won't draw properly. Once wet this problem goes away. This is not a problem. it's just physics.

The included instructions are very good. They tell you exactly how to use the filter and how to care for it. When evaluating filters the salient point is the pore size. Exactly how small do organisms need to be in order to pass the filter? I do not like that the ad copy states "protects against 99.999999% of bacteria" with no statement of the pore size. This is smoke and mirrors and smacks of hyperbole. It does not allow objective evaluation of the filter for the area where you intend it use it. This information is also not stated in the instructions. However, it is on the box. I attached a photo of this information. There it states the pore size as 0.2 microns or 200 nanometers. This is small and adequate for all microorganisms except viruses. Few personal portable filters get those. This is a very important point. Why not clearly state it? Concerning viruses, most water borne illnesses are not viral. Though it is not absolute the biggest concern would be in areas where some specific viral contagion is prevalent and could possibly be contaminating your water supply. If in doubt don't take chances chemically treat your water or boil it.

The filter comes with a very nice carrying case. If cared for properly, following the instructions, it should last a very long time. The price is reasonable for what you are getting. I like it. It easily gets five stars.
