- Reviewed in Canada on February 10, 2014Verified PurchaseIm so glad Nintendo remade this game for for the Wii u. It takes all the great moments and features from the original and make them even better!
Pros:
- HD resolution and smooth framerate (mostly)
- Shortened repetative actions (using any wind waker song more than once becomes instant)
- Controls feel more natural (Better mapping)
- Faster sailing
- Revamped soundtrack sounds better than ever!
- Hero mode adds difficulty and replayability
- Easier locations for certain items, mainly triforce pieces
- Cheaper than most games (I consider this a big plus since I buy many games)
Cons:
- Frame rate sometimes dips when there is alot happening on screen.
Overall this is a great game whether you have never played it before or have played the original many times like myself! Its definitely shelf worthy for any Wii U owner because anyone can play it and have fun. - Reviewed in Canada on August 9, 2018Verified PurchaseThis is such a fun game!! It has an awesome interface with the WiiU and is hours of fun! I’m not usually a fan of ‘little Link’ but this game is a departure from the usual world of Hyrule and is just fun!
Lots of puzzles to solve and plenty of actions, there are side adventures as well to keep busy and it’s not so hard you have to cheat and look online for tips. They do have a special stone in the game that will give you tips in game which is nice 👍
- Reviewed in Canada on January 16, 2015Verified PurchaseThis game was not as great as Ocarina, Majoras or Twilight, but if you are in need of a Zelda game it is definitely worth a play-through. If you are looking at this or Skyward, I would recommend Windwaker a hundred times over.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 10, 2014Verified PurchaseIf you're a Zelda fan and have not played this it's fun but I don't think this game lives up to the ratings and hype the reviewers gave it. I got bored a few hours in and haven't yet come back to the game. It does work well with the Wii U controls and looks good on the console.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 2, 2014Verified PurchaseI played the original Wind Waker back when it first came out and had very fond memories, so getting the HD version was a no brainer. I am amazed at how good this version looks and I was also pleased with the tweaks that were added to alleviate some of the more time-consuming aspects of the original. Wind Waker also greatly benefited from the Wii U controller, with the ability to use the map on the little screen while sailing on the TV.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 10, 2024Verified PurchaseThe cd which is slightly scratched comes in a clear cheap cd case. No artwork or game book. False advertising.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, this is a paradigm shift in HD re-makes.
Verified PurchaseNintendo has once again innovated. I've always loved the concept of HD re-makes and have been quite content purchasing games I played years ago in order to experience them in a higher resolution for today's televisions. It prolongs the life and legacy of great games.
Well, rather than just bumping up the resolution for an undoubted GameCube classic, Nintendo has re-visited the flooded version of Hyrule and made some very minor but very smart tweaks to a great game. It's funny, as I played this title for the first time in 2010 (it was in my backlog since 2003, yikes....) I thought that an HD remake would be quite a feat for such a wonderful and vibrant looking game. Obviously Nintendo thought the same. While I won't go into the particulars of the game itself, as reviews have existed for it since 2003, I'll take a brief look at what is new:
RESOLUTION: Wind Waker now runs at 1080p, 60 frames per second, and has never looked better. The game is absolutely gorgeous and its once controversial art style has really worked to its benefit to keep it timeless looking. The lighting system has been redone and its better than ever, in my opinion. The sun cascades down on characters in a way that looks quite realistic, even for a cartoon-like game, and dungeons are appropriately gloomy. Beautiful.
SAILING: The bane of the original Wind Waker was the constant need to reposition the wind in order to sail the vast ocean world of Hyrule. It was a pain and could become quite annoying. Nintendo has fixed that with the introduction of the swift sail, which can be obtained at the auction house. Once equipped, sailing is smooth and effortless...as it should have been all along. Sure, it defies logic but it great enhances the gameplay. Plus, this is Zelda! Nothing wrong with a magical sail....
FETCH QUEST: Another gripe of the original Wind Waker was a nasty fetch quest involving maps, tons of rupees, and the Triforce. This has been greatly streamlined allowing one to go after all the Triforce shards immediately circumventing the procurement of about 3000 rupees and the associated maps plus Tingle's involvement.
One feature I am not crazy about in this new iteration of the Wind Waker is the Tingle Bottle, which replaces the Tingle Tuner feature of the GCN original which needed a Game Boy Advance linked to the system. To be frank, the Tingle Bottle is just in-game Miiverse functionality. And rather than tips and hints, ala ZombiU or Demon's Souls, players are free to type or write at their leisure. As a result, the majority of Tingle Bottles are merely spam and self portraits of Link. Useless. I wish that either Nintendo would have copied the ZombiU and Demon's Souls in-game tip system or reintroduced the Tingle Tuner using the gamepad sans GBA. Oh well, it really doesn't detract from the experience, it's just...there.
All in all, fantastic re-release. This is the way it SHOULD be done and I am looking forward to other HD re-releases from the Big N. (Please, please, please Super Mario Sunshine! Please!)

5.0 out of 5 stars It's as if the Wind Waker was made with the Wii U in mind all those years ago...
Verified PurchaseAh, the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I remember a little over ten years ago that this title caused quite a bit of noise amongst the Zelda fan community. With it's cell-shaded graphics and changes in gameplay (as far as having to sail from one island to the next) this Zelda game surprised many and has been rated by fans and critics alike to be up there with the likes of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and A Link to the Past (Ocarina is still my personal favorite).
So why should you buy an updated Wind Waker game on the Wii U? If you don't you will be missing out for sure! After playing through the game I can clearly see that Nintendo listened to its legions of Zelda fans and has without a doubt made this the definitive version of Wind Waker. Not only does the game itself look great and framefate is very good (compared with the original) it has added a bunch of new features and alterations to make this game so much more enjoyable than the original:
WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS
- You can now get the Swift Sail, which enables you to not only sail across the ocean faster, but it will always have the wind at your back (no more constant conducting for you). This alone in my mind is worth the purchase.
- Conducting with the Wind Waker is easier and is now permanently assigned to the D-Pad. While sailing, the D-Pad also features the canon and salvage cable.
- Getting the Deluxe Picto Box is easier (no more trip to Forest Haven for the Firefly picture).
- There are only three Triforce charts to collect, the rest have been changed to finding the actual Triforce pieces.
- The GamePad makes it very easy to view the Map and Charts while simultaneously sailing. I almost hated the original because of having to switch constantly back and forth. Additionally, the Item selection is on the touch screen, making it easier to equip items.
- Collecting the figurines is less frustrating now, due to the fact that your Deluxe Picto Box can hold up to 12 photos and you can give multiple pictographs at one time to the guy who sculpts them.
- Other minor improvements to gameplay machanics (you'll probably notice them while playing) have made this game feel and play smoother.
- You can play the game entirely on the GamePad too!
With the original GameCube version, the game was good enough to enjoy, but it was not even close to being my favorite due to the original gameplay machanics and features. I can safely say that after playing the Wii U version my opinion of Wind Waker has drastically changed! I can see myself going back to this one time and time again in the future!
Thanks Nintendo for not giving us a sloppy update or port!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love adventure games
Verified PurchaseIf you love adventure games, liked the original Wind Waker, or even if you never played the original Wind Waker, and certainly if you are a Zelda fan, you should check this game out.
In this game you are a young boy named Link, from Outset Island. It's his birthday and tradition on the island is that boys wear a traditional green garb like the Hero of Legend when they come of age. But things quickly start to go awry as evil begins to creep across the Great Sea. Link's sister, Aryll, gets kidnapped, so he sets out to save her. His quest quickly transforms into a mission to save not just his sister, but the entire Great Sea from the evil that is spreading forth. After awhile, Link gets his own little boat and shortly after that he can sail about the Great Sea freely. There are plenty of collectibles to find in the game, such as heart pieces, items, treasure charts, and figurines.
The world from the original Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is brought to life with beautiful HD graphics. Trees and other objects have dynamic shadows now, that make the world feel more alive than the original. The graphics in this game are excellent. Some will say how can that be since it's cell shaded. The game looks excellent, but you don't like cell shading, then I don't know what to say.
As hard core Zelda fans would prefer, the game stays quite true to the original. There are a few minor tweaks here and there. For example, you only have to pay tingle to decipher a few Triforce charts for you this time. For the rest, the main triforce chart leads you to the actual triforce shards instead of giving you triforce maps like in the original. This definitely speeds up that part of the game, but I don't think there was anything terribly wrong with how it was before.
Wind Waker HD adds a new Hero Mode as well. You can turn it on and off at will. You do not have to beat the game first to unlock it. This is very nice for those who have played the original game and may want to just jump straight to hero mode. While the main game could be considered a bit casual, things get ratcheted up in Hero Mode, where hearts do not appear. As such, potions become much more important to keep on you. Also, knowing your enemy, particularly bosses, becomes much more important. So if you thought the original was too easy, now there's a new challenge this time.
If you're a Zelda fan, have played the original Wind Waker before, or just someone who loves adventure games, then you should definitely check this game out. It's a great addition to any Wii U library. And a must-have of course for any Zelda fan!
