    The first 13 pages give you a very interesting history of the language. Then there are around 30 pages talking about learning the characters & meanings, including lots about what not to do. And lastly 60 pages of Chinese characters and their meanings. Since I don't need to learn how to and how to to learn a language, there's almost nothing here to help me learn Mandarin. I'm very disappointed.

    The book provided a comprehensive history of Mandarin. However I believe a person needs to hear the language in order to learn it. I enrolled in a course given at a community College. After which I was able to halting converse with a Chinese neighbor. Who eventually refused to help me. He stated he felt like he was trying to teach a "deaf-mute".
