The Midnight Well was fabled to be enchanted.

Tonight, Dugan planned to make sure the little lass venturing out to peek at her future got what she was looking for.

One moonlit encounter. That was all it might ever be, and yet, Dugan discovered he craved more. Much more.

At the end of the harvest, Samhain bonfires had been held under the moon for as long as anyone remembered. Were they sinful? Perhaps. But they were fun, and Dugan intended to give himself another chance to see the lass he’d encountered at the well.

Tonight though, he’d go so far as becoming the Laird of Misrule. The position came with a very pretty queen consort while the bonfire blazed.

Her mother warned her against indulging in impulses. But that didn’t stop Braylin from sneaking out to dance around the bonfire on the first night of Samhain. It was a chance to be free, if only for one stolen moment.

But fate has other ideas. Dugan is illegitimate, and his stepmother is determined to make sure he will never inherit the Hay lairdship. When the lady hears that Dugan has danced the night away with an English, a Puritan girl, it’s the perfect chance to ensure her own son inherits instead of Dugan. For if Lady Hay brings the English girl to Hay land, Dugan will have to wed her or see his honor tarnished.

And Highlanders will never have a lady of the keep who is English!

A full moon, a piece of fruit of the forest, looking into the enchanted Midnight Well, you will see your soulmate. Prudence Hawlyn lives with her English Puritan family on the Borderland. Drawn to the Midnight Well she sees her soulmate, Dugan Hay, a Scotsman, bastard son of the Hay chieftain. The night of Samhain, wearing a mask, Dugan is the Laird of Misrule. Drawn to the merriment, masked Prudence becomes the Laird's consort. An instant connection is formed. The night is over and they part, but neither forgets the other. In a plot to keep Dugan from becoming clan chief, his father's wife Alice, has Prudence (Braylin) kidnapped and forced to marry Dugan. When it comes to evil manipulation, Alice wins the contest. It's no easy path for Dugan, a Scotsman and Braylin, an English Puritan, to find their own way to contentment. A lot of twists and turns and who do you trust?
    Mild sex.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love in the Highlands…

    *3.5 stars*

I hadn’t read a title by this author in ages which surprised me as I loved her historical romances. Anytime there was a new title, I was in line because there was always a sumptuous story to be had. Couldn’t wait to dig into the Laird series with its promise of mystical, historical, lovers at odds romance…

Rather than a breezy, easy love story, Dugan and Braylin were destined to fight for what they wanted. Political intrigue and the social norms of the day were going to rock them into a forced marriage that they wanted but didn’t want. Does that make sense? It does, if you catch up on their action-filled courtship…

So glad I found this and it is only the first in the series!

    *I happily reviewed this story

First off thank you Mary Wine for writing more stories! Laird of Misrule was exactly what your true fan right here needed. The story was a good length and a great fresh story line. I'm afraid I am shamelessly greedy and would have loved more details: Conversation, flirting, etc... between Dugan and Braylin on the way to the Moss Tower, just for the story to be longer. Overall I was happy and loved the story.

Those of you who are new to Mary Wine go back and read her Highlander books. They are filled with historical details, plenty of adventure and fighting when necessary, and lots of romance.

Dugan and Braylin's fight to be together will have you rooting for them. An old folks tale introduces you to this beautiful couple and sucks you immediately into the hope that they will see each other again. Braylin is an English Puritan, and Dugan is a Scott with all odds against them. At times their love story may seem predictable, but I will tell you that surprises will be around every corner. Never think you have the story figured out. Just enjoy. It's very easy to read it all in one sitting because I promise you won't want to put it down.

Dugan and Braylin find each when they look into the enchanted well and see each other. Dugan is the illegitimate son of the Laird of the Hay Clan. Braylin, known as Prudence by her family, is the daughter of an English Puritan. Their next meeting, at a Samhain Bonfire, results in her abduction by order of Lady Hay, an arrogant and jealous woman. Things are unsettled and confusing when she arrives in Scotland. She and Dugan fall in love, and wish to find a way to live in peace despite the schemes against them. This is an emotional story set on a turbulent time between the English and the Scots, and Catholics and Protestants. The story is well-written and holds your attention. There is danger and betrayal, but also friendship and trust. Braylin and Dugan are wonderful characters. They exhibit strength, loyalty, kindness, and courage. They are surrounded by some quite interesting, and not all good, secondary characters. There are some twists and surprises, a wonderful ending, and an epilogue with a hint of what is to come.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
