- Reviewed in Canada on March 13, 2014Verified PurchaseThe wingman is the urban-use oriented multitool of the wingman/sidekick family. It omits the saw and small serrated blade of the sidekick for scissors and a package opener. I'm quite impressed with it, for the price it's difficult to find comparable quality multitools.
It's surprisingly light and carries well in the pocket with the integrated clip, and the on-board tools are what most people would be likely to use in their home. You end up with a phillips driver, two flathead drivers, a package opener (handy for hard plastic clamshell packages,) a nail file, and a combination can/bottle opener. That's aside from the primary tools which are a fairly nice combination-edge blade and good pair of scissors. All of the tools work quite well, aside perhaps from the 'ruler' function stamped onto the nail file/small flathead screwdriver. The pliers are spring loaded and use anvil-style wire cutters as a cost-saving measure. Nonetheless, they suffice and even handle hard wire fine (though be sure to use the integrated hard wire cutters.)
It's not quite the do-anything tool that the wave is, lacking a proper file and a saw, but it's also a good deal cheaper and much more convenient to carry (unless you buy the optional pocket clip for the wave... which brings up the price that much more.)
Really, for the price, it's excellent. If you're interested in multitools but put off by the high prices of name-brand models and low quality of generics, the wingman / sidekick are worth a look.

Great quality tool that should last for a long time.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 12, 2025Verified PurchaseAs you would expect from Leatherman the product is extremely well built and has everything you could need for daily tasks.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 29, 2024Verified PurchaseTypical Leatherman, built to high-quality standards. The tools on the Wingman aren't extensive, but I've rarely found myself wanting. It's good for general use, but I would get something bigger if you need something with more capability.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 29, 2025Verified PurchaseSuper compact. Covers small day to day needs. I would have gone foe the wave+ But the scissors are shyte. These have a very respectable pair lol. Knife was sharp enough to shave hair off of the back of my hand. Biggest negative is, wire cutter blades don't fully close. I have tried cleaning up the tips of the pliers to get it closer. But that is all it has done, to make them touch I would have to grind the groves and then some off the inner tips of the pliers. They still cut 20g wire pretty clean. The other complaint on the cutter is its to short to cut a tie-rap in one shot it is always a 2 cut :(
It would be amazing if Leatherman could wake up and listen to their customers.
Wave+ MK2:
Replace saw with replaceable T shank holder. (include saw+file on a tshank)
Replace file with ++GOOD scissors++ Easy pesey.
Will be the "Best selling leatherman ever" !!!!!

- Reviewed in Canada on June 3, 2016Verified PurchaseINITIAL THOUGHTS
I've owned 3 Leatherman multi-tools, and from the 3 that I've owned, this one is probably the most convenient. Having too many tools on one multi-tool is sometimes overwhelming, so having this little guy around is awesome. Overall, I've loved this multi-tool.
TOOLS REVIEW
1. Needlenose Pliers -> This is the MAIN tool of the device and works flawlessly. The main hinge isn't too stiff and does the job really well. Never had any problems with the pliers. Both the pliers are spring-action, so you don't need to put in too much effort to get a good grip and they won't fly open when you release the pressure.
2. Regular Pliers -> Same goes for these pliers since it uses the same hinge as the needlenose. No problems getting right in there and the other tools don't obstruct the grip too much. You won't have any problems using either of the pliers.
3. Wire Cutters -> Kind of difficult to access due to the way it makes you hold the Leatherman. However, the location of it makes the most sense to get the cleanest, effortless cuts and accordingly they're not too big of a problem.
4. Wire Stripper -> Probably the worst tool out of the 14 as I have had a lot of problems with it. Often times it only cuts half it off or it gets stuck half way. If you're going to be doing a lot of wire work, I would recommend a separate tool specifically for wire stripping.
5. Combo Knife -> This knife is okay for opening boxes and general knife related activities, however, it is not sharp/long enough to be practical for a lot of more physical knife tasks. Nonetheless, it does the job when you're in dire need for a knife.
6. Scissors -> These spring action scissors are very strong yet very small and annoying to use. Works well for cutting string, wire or other small tasks, but, definitely does not cut anything thicker than cardboard, and even that's a stretch.
7. Package Opener -> Honestly kind of a redundant tool, but if you're cutting into something shallow where you might be afraid of cutting the inside's, then this tool is your go to. However, I often forget that this tool exists and just use the knife to cut open the box. Might come in handy nevertheless.
8. Ruler (1.5 in | 3.8 cm) -> Even though this ruler is tiny, it is super useful for measuring screw locations and helps ensure that you have a general idea of the distance between 2 holes.
9. Can Opener -> Used this bad boy camping a few times and even though it's messy it does the job. It's basically a sharp edge that if you put enough pressure on to the top of the can you can slowly open it up. Most modern can openers are pretty big and a pain to bring camping, so this tool even though not ideal, is extremely handy.
10. Bottle Opener -> Works perfectly and keeps the bottle cap relatively unscathed (I know a lot of people that collect their bottle caps so this may be a plus to some). I've stopped bringing a bottle opener camping nowadays and whip the Leatherman at parties. Definitely works.
11. Wood/Metal File -> The feeling of these gives me the 'nail on a chalkboard' feeling so I myself have never used this feature. If you're someone who keeps their nails filed than I'm sure it does the job, however I cannot vouch for it.
12-14. Phillips/Medium/Small Screwdriver -> These tools all worked perfectly and their locations are perfectly comfortable to get a good grip onto the screw.
CONCLUSION
My general consensus for these are that they are perfect as an everyday, keep it in the main drawer type of multi-tool. It doesn't have all the fancy, top of the line tools built into them, but its a bare-bones, effective little tool. If you're someone who is going to be using this everyday than I would recommend maybe spending a bit more money to get higher quality, more expensive Leatherman. At the end of the day, this is the second cheapest Leatherman available (other than the Squirt) and for only $45, it does the job.
RECOMMENDATIONS
★ Casual (Stay At Home Parent, Avid Camper) -> The Wingman (831426) **This one**
★★ Expert (Handyman, Everyday Strenuous Use) -> The New Wave (830039)
★★★ Professional (Tool Related Profession) -> The Charge (830683) or The Mut (850122)
**Highly Recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Gute Qualität / Gutes Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente multiherramienta

5.0 out of 5 stars Best tool ever made!
Verified PurchaseI was the first person i knew to get a Leatherman stainless steel multi tool when they first appeared many decades ago. I used that first one 25 times a day while running a farm. The company replaced it for free after 3 years when i bent something using it to remove a wheel from a tri-axle trailer beside an interstate highway at 2am (didn’t have my toolbox), and i am still using the second one today. I have bought many of these for gifts over the years and would nominate the Leatherman as possibly the Best Tool Ever Made. It wins for both quality manufacturing and fitness of purpose. I think it even edges out WD-40 as my most useful tool over 5 decades. I still like the original size the best, but that is just personal preference.
