Great little machine. Sews wonderful! Perfect for small embroidery projects. Great for thicker fabrics like quilt sandwiches as well. Light enough to carry around for sewing events.

Just received my new sewing/embroidery machine. Now I see that i need to download PE Design 11 or newer and I need a software key. Where is is ? How do you get one? I was told by an agent it is free but yet the only thing i can find on it, is it ends today. So I just spent $600.00 on something I cannot use!! It states you must install PE Design 11 or newer. Good luck trying to find a copy of it and download it. This is messed up!!!! It should come with the flash drive. I should not need to search the entire web pages. Stay away from this product. Good luck trying to get an agent to help!! I had one earlier and I asked how do i get the software key. He gave me a link to youtube to watch a video. No help with the security code. If the code is supposed to be free, Why is it so hard to find and download it. Thinkl I am going to send this back and hoefully, POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, YOU NEED A PROGRAM TO USE IT BUT YOU CANNOT DOWNLOAD. BEWARE DO NOT PURCHASE. BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE. DO NOT BUY DO NOT BUY

I bought this sewing/embroidery machine for me and my wife after futzing with an older machine to try and get it going. Due to unavailability of parts I gave up and got something decent after seeing good reviews for Brother machines.
The good: So far we have been very happy with the machine but after a few months of light use, once a week or so for a few hours. It's easy to use, easy to thread, easy to wind bobbins on. It's been a great machine just for sewing and the embroidery is a great bonus for the price!
The bad: We had a problem develop after moving it in the trunk to bring to our sewing lesson and got a "foot pedal break" error. Very non descriptive, I wasn't sure if we had warranty because Brother does *not* have a clear warranty statement on their site for their sewing products. I just found a generic one for all of their products which also wasn't clear. I am pretty electronically and mechanically inclined so I took a look at it myself.
I very quickly found the problem to be the *super cheap* 3.5mm jack they put on the unit that for some reason they have 4 connections to when the foot pedal only needs 2 connections. One of these connections is to detect if the pedal is plugged in, the other I think is to detect if it's making good contact? Which it seems over engineered to solve a problem that shouldn't exist if you used a decent quality connector in the first place.
I bypassed the connection checking for detection of a closed contact and replaced the connector with a higher quality part and got it working again.
On the plus side the rest of the machine seems really well engineered and well built. I just wish they didn't cheap out on this one part.
I dropped only one star because of this because I imagine if you aren't transporting the machine or you are very careful with it you will never have this issue. But I still drop a star because I could imagine if someone else had this problem it would be days or weeks of back and forth with a supplier or brother's support. And it's a broken part *in the machine* so either you have to ship the machine or bring it somewhere vs just having the pedal itself break which is easy to get a replacement for.
