Kottas on Dressage is a distillation of the practice and philosophy of one of the most highly regarded international trainers of the current era. Having stressed the need for the rider to establish correct posture and a thorough understanding of the aids before attempting to train the horse, the book highlights the value of establishing rapport with the horse and enhancing his mental responses and developing his physique with groundwork before progressing to work under saddle. The text then focuses on thorough, incremental development of the basic gaits, explains the value and execution of the lateral exercises and introduces advanced work including tempi changes, pirouettes, piaffe and passage. A number of commonly encountered problems are analysed, and remedies offered. Underpinning the whole text is the author s fundamental stance on horses and training: I always see the horse as a partner. He must be trained slowly and patiently.

Review

"It is clear, concise and informative—like the author himself—and it is beautifully laid out with bullet points and sub-heads for every aid, every movement, every eventuality."  —Sylvia Loch

"The best [book] to be written this century."  —
British Horse

"Kottas-Heldenberg's years of training experience shine through in his book. It's organized extremely clearly, making it an excellent reference guide that you can refer back to without much page-flipping . . .Timeless dressage lessons for both horse and rider."  —
Horsemen's Yankee Pedlar

"There are various reasons why I loved this book, but a main one is its extraordinary clarity, in part a result of that organization. . . . If for some reason I was forced to abandon my considerable dog-eared dressage library and was allowed to take with me only a single book, this one would be it." —
Dressage Today (July 21, 2011) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Kottas writes with simplicity and clarity. He discusses training concepts in a clear and easy to understand manner that is helpful for a rider starting out, or a more experienced rider. I have been riding dressage for a long time and I found that Kottas' explinations of movements and some training concepts to help add a fullness and an overall richness to my relationship with my horse and we have acheived more harmony and purity in our movements. Everyone should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking the relationship with your horse to a higher level.

I thoroughly enjoyed this view into the work of a former Chief Rider. I feel that in the US, we often focus too heavily on the rider alone rather than on the important relationship between the rider and the horse.

I love to do ground work and lunging but have needed more educated and experienced views on these skills but have been generally disappointed. This work has given me some additional support on a side of horsemanship I consider to me very important.

This book is a visual pleasure with drawings and photographs that are informative and pleasant. One can find great satisfaction in merely turning the pages!

Herr Kottas-Heldenberg is grounded in the classical school which is the most rewarding approach for any true equestrian. If the reader can take this message away, they have gained much.

Brilliant book - the pics really helped when I got confused with what I really was supposed to be doing at any given time in trying to do specific movements. I love being able to pick it up and just remind myself of things -
