Good for keeping things "cool" .. not cold

- Reviewed in Canada on September 25, 2024Verified PurchaseIt does the job well for what it is. You have a decent passive cooler if it's not plugged in and when you need the lower temps/duration, having the option of powering with a car accessory port or something like a portable Ryobi power pack is fantastic. Thermoelectric coolers do use a lot of power and aren't with tons of features, so like the other reviewer said, some kind of temperature regulator would be useful. We opted for a little device (temperature controller DC 12v 120w) that we spliced inline to the plug in cord. We added plug in terminals so we can unplug it when needed.
Contacted support to get some clarifications on what, if any, non-air insulation is used in the walls and lid and found out they do indeed add foam. No need for any Great Stuff spray foam mods.
Overall, if I had to pay extra (probably double at this size) for a Yeti or I can have this passive/active cooler, it's a no brainer for the Koolatron. As far as longivity goes, no idea since this is our first Koolatron. Will update if it ever fails.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 19, 2023Verified PurchaseI cannot recommend this product. The build quality is way too cheap for what they're charging.
I bought it to have a mini fridge in my room. Unfortunately the side of the cooler with the fan on it swelled and stopped the built in fan from spinning.
It now only works if it is in a stand up mode with the lid opening from the side. I also had to remove the plastic fan shroud as it also blocked the fan from spinning once the side of the cooler swelled..
if you need an in room fridge, I would suggest buying an actual fridge. This is not worth it.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 9, 2024Verified PurchaseGetting the unit in one piece was difficult. The first one was damaged as was the box it was shipped in. very inconvenient and should of been caught at source.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 11, 2014Verified PurchaseThis is a replacement of a 15 years old Koolatron cooler that died. The cooler that died had seen numerous auto trips, and the occasional conscription to serve as an impromptu "refrigerator" when our kitchen refrigerator was full. To judge the functionality and value of such a cooler, one must understand what this type of cooler is meant for, and their limitations. I did not expect this cooler to work like a compressor type refrigerator, and used it for the purpose it was intended. With that in mind, I was very happy with the cooler I had. It died when the thermoelectric device quit, presumably the same way a transistor radio or the CPU of a computer may quit after extended use. Am I upset that a purely electronic device that's supposed to have infinite life quit after 15 years of use? Not at all. I was actually impressed that the mechanical fan that was used to circulate the air inside the cooler and the outside radiator worked well to the end. The cooler itself survived all the usual bangs and drops of family outings without any dent.
The new one looked just as well constructed. The fan sounded less noisy than the old one, but I probably forgot how quiet the old one was when it was new. The cooling radiator worked well. We just returned from a 4-day road trip. The cooler kept everything well chilled in the back of our SUV. The doomed lid was very useful in expanding the capacity of the cooler. I was initially concerned about the lock, but it seemed to work well although I suspect that if the cooler were to tumble, the lid will spring open. The older one will lock the lid securely. The new one, on the other hand, is much more convenient to open.
I certainly expect this cooler to last us another 15 years. I consider this a very worthwhile purchase.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 24, 2024Verified PurchaseThe cooler doesn't cool items very quickly - takes along time to get items cool.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 2, 2024Verified PurchaseI liked this product because it could take a lot of stuff and keep everything cool. We put bottles of water, ginger ale along with chocolate bars and shacks.
We also used it as a place to store frozen items on the way back from our trip and not open the lid for 4 days , although the items were no longer frozen they were still cold.
Frozen homemade bread, cookies and biscuits. It allowed us to cut them into slices and refreeze them.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 15, 2023Verified PurchaseI just got it today. It came in a brown box, that was all taped up like you got it at the supermarket and pu the cooler inside it for shipping.
Price point is good, but with this quality, i rather build one myself.
The cables don't seem strong at all. And the quality on the finishings are somewhere else but not on the product. The screws are loose and it is taking forever to cool. The divisor that comes with it had fingerprints of grease, so it was either used before and returned or even poor quality control.
Definitely will return the product.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 21, 2024Verified PurchaseWorked quite well when we 1st got it. Went on 1 trip and it kept everything cool, not cold. Never used the heat feature. A year later tried it again for a short trip and noted the temperature would not stay consistent. Now 2 more years later, after not being used, it does not cool anymore. The fan still works but the elements do not heat up or cool ! Waste of money for a good 1 time use. Also, the electric block connection, gets overheated, has done so from the very start! Save your cash !

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well so far
Verified PurchaseMy hubby is an OTR truck driver and needed something to keep lunch meat, mayo, yogurt, egg-whites, butter, fruit, and leftovers cold. I bought this for him as a stop-gap measure to the mini-frig we will get for him once he settles into his new career. This works well but, you have to keep an eye on the external temps for optimum results. It keeps things cool only to about 40 degrees below ambient temperature. At times the truck can reach 110-120 degrees inside in the summer, so that would bring the cooler's internal temp down to around 70-80, far too hot for many refrigerated items.
So, we place an giant cup of ice inside the cooler close to the fan to help with cooling, refreshing the ice cup about once a day from the ice station at any truck-stop. We also have some of those gel packs made for coolers that we freeze at home/motel and we keep them in the cooler next to the walls. Even when these have thawed gel packs stay very cold and help greatly with keeping that internal temp way down. We also try to fill it up when the cooler has cooled down (takes about an hour) and then we fill it with stuff that's already cold. When adding warm items such as soft drinks I try to do only 4 or 5 drinks at a time, and then I try to put warm things in it only at night so it doesn't put more strain on the cooler.
This may seem a lot of work but it really takes only a couple of minutes a day and the end result is that it stays ice cold and we have never had an issue with spoiled food. I doubt he'll have to do this during the winter months.
He and I love this cooler, as it beats buying ice (he gets ice for free when reusing the cup purchased from the truck-stop) every day, and worrying about dealing with a lot of water. Recommend for cross-country trips, camping, RV's, and truckers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dependable and a good cooler
Verified PurchaseI bought this cooler mainly because using ice to keep things cold is such a pain in the @*!#$. Water builds up at the bottom, sloshes around, gets into things, creates a nasty toxic soup, etc... This cooler solves that problem. I also bought a Koolatron AC power adapter so I can plug it into a standard AC power outlet, which I do in hotel rooms. That means I don't need to move food from my cooler to a hotel refrigerator at night and re-pack everything in the morning. Another inconvenience solved.
This particular powered cooler keeps food somewhere between what I would call cool and cold. I pack it up pretty full when I use it, and I've read that packing it full limits how cold it gets, but it still gets cold enough. I recently was on a road trip for about a week and I had a few cartons of cottage cheese in it, among other things. The cottage cheese stayed fresh for the whole week so it passed my "dairy products test".
Sometimes I throw this cooler in the back of my truck with a half-dozen of those re-freezable ice blocks in the bottom and food on top. I have the 1 liter Igloo MaxCold Ice Blocks that you can get at Target (at least that's where I got mine). Six ice blocks take up about 25% - 30% of the space, which for my purposes still leaves plenty of space for food. Usually I bungee-cord it when it's in the back of my truck so it doesn't fly around while I'm driving, but not always, and sometimes it gets hit by other loose items in the back of my truck. It takes a little abuse in the back of my truck but it's still working fine after about 2 years.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as expected for the money
Verified PurchaseI used this item FOR my BOAT to keep things cool but unfortunately it did not get very cold when plugged in so therefore
that's why the very low score and considering the cost l was not very happy.

Verified PurchaseOrdered this product and haven’t had the chance to try it and see if it works but was less than impressed as it showed up looking used. With marks and scrapes even the decal was wrinkled like it wasn’t applied with any consideration.
