I use Tap and Die sets occasionally - as part of my DIY or some repair projects - quite often to clean-up an existing thread and for a few new internal threads when building a chassis for my wireless COMM equipment. Mostly the Tap set than the die set. Hitherto I was using separate SAE and Metric sets purchased very many years ago - along with other bits and pieces like a better handle, etc... Now, this Kolvoii 86-Piece Tap and Die Set, both SAE & Metric from #4 to 5/8" and M3 to M16 - is a convenient all-in-one step-up for me. As seen in the pictures, this kit comes with everything needed for completing the job. Even the carry/storage case is well made - with all the pieces held securely without falling out when the case is opened. We get two sizes of standard wrenches for both - Tap and Die. We also get a T-handle (M3-M6, 1/16"-14") along with Metric and SAE thread-pitch gauges. The build quality is as good or better than similar kits from the big-box stores that cost much more. The product is described and illustrated very well - and every bit and piece of this kit lives up to that description (and expectations). Should last a long time for my kind of use. Good value.

    I'm a shade tree mechanic and volunteer at our local little ski club that has old equipment. So having a kit like this, it's super helpful. I find I use the taps more often as we pull out old bolts and put in new ones but clean them out before the new bolt goes in. One of our pieces of equipment at the ski hill comes from Germany, and some of the bolts are quite unique. So it's helpful to have one of these to clean up a bolt and reuse it.
    I found all the handles and adapters, very easy to use.

    Over decades of tinkering and building, nothing sours my stomach faster than the realization I’ve stripped a nut or bolt. Now, I can quickly get back on track with this complete kit. The build quality is excellent for the DIYer, and the versatility of these dies has expanded even my knowledge. The UNF threads are ideal for micro adjustments or threading sheet metal, while the UNC has a coarser thread while still having a closer thread grouping, allowing greater hold and impact resistance. Of course, NPT is the meat and potatoes for homeowners, and the taps and dies are strong enough to start threads in or on bare metal. All the wrenches are comfortable to use and securely hold the taps and dies in place while using them. The pitch guides are a nice inclusion too, helping people like me that can’t tell the difference between threads by just looking at them. The carrying case is heavy plastic, with strong hinges and closures, while firmly holding all the pieces without anything falling out. I feel the price reflects the quality of this set, and I fully expect to pass it on to my son when he gets older.

    This is a pretty comprehensive tap set, but I’d put it in the service category. It’s likely more suited for chasing and repairing existing threads, or maybe tapping and threading more forgiving materials. The taps and dies themselves feel decent. Up to now, I haven’t used them on anything other than chasing and repairing.

    The handles (on the other hand) I think I’m going to break these sooner rather than later. I’ve been very careful with them and will continue to be, but I know it’s only a matter of time before the larger die wrench gives out. The tap and die holders are all made of some sort of cast aluminum or zinc alloy. They’re non-magnetic and appear to be a very low-quality casting (likely very porous). In my experience, castings like these will break. So if you plan on using this kit, be prepared to purchase more reliable handles separately if you don’t already own some.

    I’m leaning into the die holders because they’re more susceptible to breakage. However (on the plus side), this kit uses hex dies! That’s advantageous because when cutting threads, if a bit more torque is needed than I’d be comfortable putting on the included handle, one could (but probably shouldn’t) use a deep socket on a ratchet or the box end of a wrench to get out of a bind (provided the die is already started straight, and only for removal). I get that it’s not best practice, but options are options (and if you’re looking at buying a set like this, chances are you’ve already put an adjustable wrench on a hex die, maybe even a vice grip). If it works, it works!

    The taps are decent too. I wouldn’t go anywhere near a blind hole with one of these, but for servicing, cleaning, and repairing threads, they’ve been fine. I’ve used a few to clean grimy threads and (at the risk of sounding like an even bigger hack after that wrench-on-a-die comment) when I clean threads with a tap, I chuck it into a cordless drill. That’s right, come and get me! And so far, these taps have handled whatever nonsense my M18 drill has thrown at them. (This excludes 1/4-20 taps, of course—they usually break as soon as I take them out of the box.)

    TL;DR: This is a decent and very comprehensive budget-friendly tap and die set. Great for maintenance, cleaning, and repairing, but I’m not confident about cutting new threads. The handles/holders will likely break under significant torque (probably right where the handle threads into the holder), so plan to have or acquire alternatives.

    Pros:
    + Nice box, well labeled, the pieces are held securely and don't fall out of the upper half when the case is opened.
    + There are two tap handles, one large and one small straight, plus the collet type. I like the small straight one better than the collet type in general. The straight handles have a double threaded bolt into the pinch block which gives better leverage for tightening the taps.

    Did a quick test using the 7.0x1.0mm die. It was a little hard to start, but worked well enough with good Oatey cutting oil on a common soft steel bolt shaft. The 5/16 die did a good job of cleaning a brass toilet tank bolt, but it didn't want to start on the correct side until I'd started it on the back side and cleaned up the threads a bit on the saw cut end, then went back to the tapered side of the die. It also took off a number of fine slivers of metal, so I wonder if it is a bit small, or if the bolt just had shallow threads that this new die reamed out? Close enough regardless.

    The set does include all the intermediate and unusual sizes for both SAE and Metric. My old sets focused on "popular" sizes and left some of these others out. Plus this set has more big sizes.

    Cons:
    - Substituted a second 12-24 tap in place of a 10-24. This is an issue for me because 10-24 is one of my most used sizes, where I rarely ever use 12-24.
    - Compared to my ancient Craftsman sets, the dies are not as well formed. The cutting areas are narrower, have slivers on the edges and some of the threads are not complete. See photos. The slivers will probably shear off right away.
    - Box has no places to put taps or dies not part of the set. This is sadly a common feature of these sorts of products; they can't see beyond their own stuff. I have a number of loose NPT dies that this set doesn't include; they will remain loose...

    Meh:
    .. The case has clip latches made to look like lever clamps; they aren't. At least they have hinge pins rather that just a strip of temporarily flexible plastic.
    .. The straight tap handles and the die handle bodies are die cast metal, not sure what. I'd be very cautious and well lubricated with the larger sizes and hard metal.
    .. The organization of the dies in the case is a bit haphazard. I'd rather all the metric started on one side and the SAE on the other side and met in the middle, which is what they did with the taps. However the dies are rather mixed up.

    Bottom line: For now I'm happy with this. There are many more sizes than I had before, and they seem to be adequate for my occasional DIY use. Far better than HbFt cheapies.

    This product is a set of tap and die tools in both SAE and Metric patterns. The set includes taps, dies, tap wrenches, die wrenches, and metric and SAE pitch gauges. The set is quite inclusive including both coarse and fine pitch standard tools. This set of tools is provided in a custom designed blow-molded HDPE case with true hinges and two over-center latches to secure the case. The case has custom-fitted niches for each tool with each tool’s identity molded into the surface of the case. The set does offer two NPT (National Pipe Thread) tools, specifically a 1/8”-27 NPT tap and a 1/8”-27 NPT die. While this selection of NPT-spec tools is nowhere near to being exhaustive, the inclusion of these two tools is appreciated.

    The cutting tools in this case are CNC-machined from what the manufacturer describes as “GCr15 bearing steel.” I have found that GCR15 steel is a type of high-carbon chromium bearing steel, similar in composition to chrome steel. It has a slightly different chemical composition, with chromium content ranging from 1.30% to 1.60% and carbon content around 0.95% to 1.05%. GCR15 steel offers excellent hardness, wear resistance, and high fatigue strength. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of rolling bearings, gears, and other high-precision mechanical components. This steel alloy is suitable for CNC machining and subsequent heat treatment and hardening, as is required for tools such as these taps and dies. Additionally, these tools are provided with what the manufacturer describes as “titanium plating.” I think this must be a titanium nitride coating based upon the purpose of the tools and the appearance of the coating. In any event, the titanium coating provides for additional hardness and lubricity which are qualities welcomed for this type of tool.

    Since I have just received this tool set, I have not yet had the opportunity to use the tools under real world conditions. That said, I have checked a selection of the taps and dies included in the set against standard hardware that I keep for testing purposes. I have not found a single instance of any tool that appeared to be out of specification. I have also briefly tested several of the taps and dies to assess capability and performance. I have found that these tools have the ability to cut metal and to cut it well. All of the tools tested were found to cut very smoothly and very cleanly which I have no doubt is, at least in part, because of the titanium (nitride?) coating applied to the tools. All cutting tasks were performed with appropriate cutting fluid.

    I will be giving this tool set a strong workout this coming summer as I have several projects I hope to complete. I think that these tools will help in those tasks and I will not be breaking so many taps that have grown dull and have chips from prior use. I like this tool set very much and look forward to using it in productive work in the very near future.

    I have a small set of taps and dies that I use quite frequently for cleaning up threads on damaged nuts and bolts and bolt holes. However, I have more and more been coming across times where I don't have the right size tap or die. This set will probably cover all of those instances for me. It is a very inclusive set covering both metric and SAE sizes with multiple thread pitches. You have all of the handles need for both the taps and dies as well as the thread gauges. All taps and dies are coated with a Titanium Nitride coating that helps to greatly reduce friction with some added strength. You should almost always use a cutting oil though to protect your tools and the project that you are working on. And as a final plus, the plastic blow-molded case that these come in is very well made and holds each tool in it's individually marked place so that you know where each tool belongs. The hinges are actual rotating hinges and not just thin plastic that bends and eventually breaks after lots of use. This set should last for many years to come. Highly recommend.
