Wessex, AD 878
Aisley's young life was changed forever when her father accompanied King Alfred into battle and lost his life in a deadly skirmish with the Vikings. Now, almost seven years later, the Vikings are once again rallying on Wessex's borders, and Aisley fears that her older brother may have treacherous plans to betray the king by aligning himself with the invading Norsemen. But when Aisley encounters a handsome nobleman in the market, she feels the first stirrings of hope. Though they met only once when Aisley was little more than a child, she recognizes him immediately as one of King Alfred's most trusted men.
It has been years since Brecc has seen Aisley, but when he spots her in the marketplace, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to the copper-haired young lady with a gift for healing. Before his fledgling feelings for her can develop into something more, however, a Viking attack tears them apart. King Alfred is forced into hiding, and in a matter of days, the Saxon nation is brought to its knees. Unwilling to forsake their people, the king and his men embark on secret raids of Viking encampments. But when Aisley joins the fight, Brecc must reconcile his steadfast loyalty to King Alfred with his growing love for the king's newest warrior.

Aisley first meets Brecc when her father goes into battle with King Alfred and loses his life in a deadly skirmish with the Vikings. It is there that she first meets Brecc and feelings of hope are stirred within her, but it is many years later that she meets up with Brecc again. Seven years later, she fears that her brother has plans to align himself with the fearsome Norseman.
I enjoyed A Kingdom to Claim but I didn’t think I wouldn’t because I do normally enjoy anything I have read by Sian Ann Bessey. I like her detail of history but also taking creative license when necessary as it is in fiction. Recommended!
My gratitude to Netgalley and Shadow Mountain. All opinions are honest and mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
Verified PurchaseI loved historical fiction and this one really hit the mark with king Alfred the Great. The story and a steady pace. Never boring. Not too much violence, clean love story set in 9th century with a swoon worthy hero and a sweet protagonist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible
Verified Purchase“I love the goodness of your heart,” he said. “As I love the nobility of yours,” she responded.
Wow! This incredible story has Viking invaders, intense battles, loyalty, betrayal, courage, faith, and love! And it’s based on real events. This was my first book by this author, I will be adding her backlist to my TBR.
Aisley is a skilled healer, both brave and strong. I loved that she chose to do right even with the danger and possible ramifications. I found the herbal cures she used very interesting. I enjoyed the banter between Aisley and Rheged. Rheged was a wonderful addition to the story. Brecc is a nobleman and warrior completely devoted to his king. I thoroughly enjoyed his friendship with Rheged. He was a wonderful leader among the men. I enjoyed seeing his become a trusted advisor to the king too. I loved the romance between Brecc and Aisley. It was so tender and sweet, even when it was full of unknowns. I loved King Alfred and his devotion to God and seeking His direction. He was a brilliant, godly leader and I am so glad I got to learn more about him.
A few more quotes:
“I asked you to join me in the carole because not only did I wish to dance with you above all the other ladies in the great hall, but I also wished to dance with you above my normal desire to remain seated.”
“And do not ever apologize for needing me to hold you.” He extended his arms to her. “Especially as it is almost certain that I share the same desire.”
“But before I leave, I wish you to know that I have fallen in love with you. I do not know when I shall be free to offer you more than my heart... ” “Since you are the one whom I always dream of at night and ache to be beside each day, I have begun to believe that I am in love with you also.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Historic Read
Verified PurchaseTo be honest, this is the first e-book that I have fully read. I prefer holding an old-fashioned book in my hands. But this novel was intriguing enough that it held my interest and it was an enjoyable journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this especially since inspired by true events !
Verified PurchaseAn interesting story based on an actual king & battle s with Vikings. The sweet part of the story about young lovers was very enjoyable.
A nice change from the detective & police type novels I often read. I read it within a day as I didn't want to stop. After the epilogue is written the part about the historic real King Alfred the Great & the true events of this reign.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good historical fiction
Verified PurchaseYears ago, I read a book about King Alfred, who soon became one of my favorite historical figures. So, finding this one was a treat. The author does a good job of including solid historical facts and building the story around those. The love story develops during a perilous time in England’s history, when Viking invasions plagued the land. The hero is a fictional character who is close to the king, and the heroine is the daughter and sister of one of his thanes.
