Worth your money
- Reviewed in Canada on January 24, 2016Verified PurchaseAn amazing translation of amazing series. You can tell that great care was taken by the publisher to make this a special release, to the faithful translation to the exclusive cover and foreword from the author himself. As for the story itself, it's a unique story that even someone who isn't familiar with the series can enjoy the minimalism and delicacy of the writing. An absolute must for fans! I look forward to seeing more from Vertical.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 6, 2017Verified PurchaseI was skeptical about how this would hold up as a piece of literature, I ended up completely satisfied.
There was about 2-3 lines where I wish the translator had done some foot notes cause clearly there was some word play he couldnt translate:
Oshina says : paid and done
and araragi mishears: dirty slob
How do you mishear like that? Clearly it was something in the Japanese but even without that the book is certainly a very fun, sometimes moving read.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 30, 2016Verified PurchaseThe high quality of the translation was apparent from the first page. The rest of the book did not disappoint either. The personality of the characters really shone through and the humor was spot on. Physically, the book itself is of high quality. The cover is gorgeous and the whole thing seems quite durable. I am glad that I bought this and hope that the rest of the series gets translated.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 23, 2016Verified PurchaseThis is a great novel. The main character is very relatable and I actually find his long monologues enjoyable. I hope this series gets enough attention so we can get more of them translated.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 4, 2016Verified PurchaseA great book, as a prelude to a great series.
I love the Monogatari series, and this is likely my favorite volume of the series, as the prequel to the rest of the series.
The book itself had arrived on time, in perfect condition, can recommend to anyone interested in buying, to look into this.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 28, 2021Verified PurchaseChronologically this is the first book in the Monogatari series which is known for it's unique writing style, Japanese puns, and heavy dialogue. I was honestly surprised at how well the translation was done. I'm sure there was a lot of wordplay still lost in translation, but there were references and puns in English that were done quite well. This is definitely a series that requires you to suspend belief and really embrace the supernatural elements. It's also a series that isn't for everyone as the writing style is very different from probably anything you've read before. It's very character focussed and is extremely heavy on dialogue. But if you enjoyed the anime I think this is a great place to start to get into the written source material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, tragic, and hilarious beginning to the Monogatari series
Verified PurchaseAs any devoted fan will tell you, Kizumonogatari: Wound Tale has been a long time coming. It marks the first time the long-running Monogatari series has been officially translated into English, and although it's technically the third volume in the series to be published, it's the perfect place for both newcomers and folks familiar with SHAFT's anime adaptation alike to jump in. Even taken on its own, it's also simply a darn fine novel.
The bottom line is that Kizumonogatari is a treat -- a perfect mixture of tragedy and comedy. Here, author NISIOISIN's love for wordplay and well-crafted characters with big personalities like Meme Oshino and Tsubasa Hanekawa that play perfectly off of each other is on full display, and the novel's occasional raunchier scenes manage to remain lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek without going overboard (which some of his later works fall victim to on occasion). It may initially take a few pages to get used to the writing style, but it adds a unique flair to the internal dialogues of the narrator Koyomi as he recounts his life-changing encounter with the legendary vampire Kissshot Acerolaorion Heartunderblade.
Concerning the quality of the new English translation, the wordplay doesn't always flow quite as smoothly as one might like it to -- but considering just how entrenched the author's jokes and puns are in the Japanese language, the translator did a pretty bang-up job on getting everything to be the best that it could have possibly been. It simply reads much, much better than any past unofficial translations I've seen. Vertical also did a wonderful job with the book in the graphic design department; it's a beautifully-designed edition, and the newly-commissioned cover art by series artist Vofan is stunning (and fret not, purists: the original illustration from the Japanese edition is included inside, as well!).
Overall, whether you're a Monogatari maniac or someone wondering what all the fuss is about, you couldn't ask for a better jumping-in point than here. With a little bit of luck, perhaps Vertical will decide to continue publication of the rest of the series -- and considering both the quality of the writing and of their translation job, I can only hope that they do.

5.0 out of 5 stars El misterio resuelto: la Golden Week

5.0 out of 5 stars My First entry into any of the Monogatari media
Verified PurchaseI feel my look on this light novel will be less bias than most of the others, simply because i haven't yet watched any of the much popular monogatari series of anime, but that doesn't means to say that because i'm less bias that i'm not going to rate this book any less than the other people.
So i'll start by saying that i'm a very slow reader and that i usually take long breaks between even small sections of books, which can cause me to take maybe even a couple weeks to read a 200 page book. but this, its very well written for a light novel, yet not so simplistic that it feels like its being dragged on, or slowly boring me, and i ended up finishing this book very quickly. (which sucks because i have to wait until December 2016 for the next in the series)
- extra information about the quality of the book its self below
The quality of the cover is really nice with its matte finish and sleek but simplistic new cover art. The size is a bit strange its a bit wider than most books and a little shorter too, but it turns out the sizing of the books might actually be beneficial, since its easier to keep open without creasing the spine, and it allows the books to feel more flexible than other books that aren't as wide (good for people wanting to read with one hand) and for £7-8 its definitely worth a try if your on the edge, and if you already know you like the monogatari series, i'm sure this wont change your mind (the original cover art is displayed inside the book)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente Lectura
