As far as I'm concerned, this is probably the single best upgrade you could do for your Quest, and it's kind of a shame the device doesn't ship with something like this already. The main things this gets you that would be of interest to pretty much every user is:
- A much more comfortable headstrap that's easy to adjust (and clean!)
- Significantly increased playtime without having to plug in
This item delivers on all of that, at a substantially lower cost than the official one that you can buy from Meta. It looks great, seems to be working great so far, and is super easy to wear and use.
Here's what I love:
- All the contact points are a PU/silicone material, which for me is important because I work out in my Quest and sweat a lot. The standard headstrap absorbs it, and even though it's not gross (yet) I know it wouldn't be long before it is (on the plus side, no one else in the house wants to use it!). At any rate, this one easily wipes down with a wet cloth, like any piece of gym equipment.
- With pivoting hinges and a thumbwheel on the back, the angle and size is quickly and easily adjusted for a variety of heads and faces, making the headset easier to put on and take off, and adjust if you want to share your Quest with others.
- You only need to plug into one single port to charge the Quest and the headstrap battery simultaneously. (note, I don't link to a PC so I'm not sure if the port on the back of the strap will pass through data)
- Overall it's very light and slim, but it does lend some more balance to the headset since you now have a battery on the back that also functions as a counterweight.
The only minor negatives for me are:
- You need to provide your own power supply to charge it. Not a huge deal since these are readily available anywhere. Anything with a USB-C charging capability will work but a 45W or greater is optimal.
- The outer side of the top strap is entirely Velcro. Since the Velcro is only needed close to the end, I'd have appreciated if the outer part was the same or similar material as what's on the inside, for looks and cleanliness.
I've also noticed this strap is not great if you want to kick back and watch content... if you're reclining, you have a battery pack on the back of your head, and putting any pressure on it in turn pushes the headset away from your face since the strap is rigid. I wouldn't really call this a negative since it's the nature of this setup. But if this is how you're primarily using your Quest, then this might not be the best product for you; in fact the original strap is best for that. But for pretty much everything else, this one rules!
