Beautiful Pencils Perfect for Botanical Colouring

I absolutely love these coloured pencils both for the colour selection and for the way the colours interact with one another! The pigments are rich and blend smoothly, making them ideal for detailed botanical illustrations. The inclusion of a colourless blending pencil is a great touch as it helps create seamless gradients and soft textures, ensuring for me that this kit stands above the rest in my collection for its dedicated tool addition. The colour palette is gorgeous, with natural tones that work wonderfully for floral and botanical artwork. Plus, there’s no strong waxy or chemical smell, which is a nice bonus. These have quickly become my go-to for relaxing, precise colouring. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys detailed nature-themed work!

I'm comparing these to a 24 color set of Prismacolor pencils I have.

In the screenshot, you can see the Prismacolor in use on the rainbow-colored leaves in the top-right. There's also a yellow-green leaf in the bottom center that is Prismacolor. The rest is done using this set (and some metallic markers). I tried to use every color in the set.

In general I like this set. It is not bad. However they do not blend as easily and in general struggle to create a smooth texture. Their textures are also inconsistent, the browns are by far the worst for example. They come with one of those transparent blending pencils, and you really need it, whereas with the other pencils it was never a concern.

I will also say that I feel like the colors included in this set are not a great selection. For example there's a black and 2 greys, at least one of which is completely unnecessary. Half those greens (and some of the blues and browns) are not necessary if you can do just a tiny bit of blending. I'd easily exchange them for some red/yellow/orange/pink options.

I understand this is a set for botanicals so there's a reason why the distribution is like this. However, my 24 color general set actually gives me a bigger range of colors overall.

I do like the inclusion of a card with the names that you can color to show which color is which. The package is also easy to reuse, although popping out the pencils can be a bit annoying, and of course I would prefer a hard tin box.

I love to use colored pencils. I have some larger sets of Kalour pencils, but this one appealed to me to put in a small case which will allow me to keep floral/plant colors handy in one place.

BOX
This box is cardboard. You can keep the pencils in it if you want to, but it won't be good for long term use. I suggest you get a colored pencil case to keep them in. I use the kind that has pages like a book- it is the easiest to use in my recliner for artwork.

COLORS
The colors are perfect for doing flowers and plants. I inserted a few other more earthy colors from my other pencils in the case, but for the most part it is pretty complete.

QUALITY
Kalour is not a top of the line quality pencil, but I will have to say that these pencils are a really nice quality. I have some of the best colored pencils money can buy. I usually reach for Kalour pencils if I am not doing artwork for high level projects. Often the Kalour creates some color and depth that others don't. As for sharpening, if you sharpen a lot, they might break now and then. I try to go slow to get the best out of the pencils with the least waste.

SWATCH SHEET
This does come with a swatch sheet so you can color with your pencils to refer to it for doing pictures.

THE BOTTOM LINE
I like this set of pencils a lot. It is small and manageable and perfect to keep in a smaller case for more specific artwork.

MY RATING
FIVE STARS. I am glad that I got this set. It is always nice to have more greens for doing plants and flowers, and the other colors included in this allow me to capture many of the flowers in my extensive garden pretty well without having to pull in a lot of other colors from other sets

I found this brand of pencils after they came out in the top 3 for quality on an influencer video. I was a bit wary, but they were purchased with their own money and it seemed like a very honest and thorough review.
They don't disappoint.
My own experience prior to this was a very expensive brand and a mid range, these are way better than the mix range but obviously not as good at the high priced ones.

They blend really nicely and there's a nice selection of colours provided to do colouring on flowers and more.

Unfortunately I already own the larger 120 range and had hoped this set would fill in the gaps, however every colour is already contained within the 120 set.

A blending pencil is included which is nice as is a colouring chart and detailed instructions to complete your own version of the image on the front of the box they come in.

What I appreciate the most is the names on them, this is really handy for remembering which colours you're using, and when selecting from the swatch.
They feel really nice to use and aren't at all scratchy, they lay down a nice amount of colour and it's easy to layer with them.
If anything I wish they laid down a bit more colour, but overall I really like them and for the price this is a nice set to see if you like the pencils from this brand.

(3/5) Pigment Behavior & Color Performance: The palette is interesting for botanical work, with a good mix of greens, yellows, pinks, and muted earth tones. Pigment saturation is generally solid, but granulation varies. Darker tones (especially blues, grays, and light pink) had a rough texture and tended to scratch the surface, even with light pressure. These same colors produced wax buildup quickly, which made further blending difficult. The yellows and mid-range greens performed more smoothly and gave better control over layering.

(3/5) Blending & Layering: Blending isn’t a strength of this set. Heavy pressure creates waxy color blocks that resist further manipulation. The most effective method was to keep pressure light and build gradually with circular motion. This approach reduced patchiness, but the set still struggles to produce soft transitions. Artists relying on subtle color merges or painterly effects will find it limiting.

(4:5) Paper Pairing: I tested these on an Artist’s Loft Sketch Pad (74 g/m²)—a smooth surface that matched the pencils well. More textured paper (like Canson or mixed media) made the granulation and uneven blending more pronounced. For this set, smooth, lightweight paper is definitely a better match.

(4/5) Practical Use & Comparison: While I wouldn’t use this for finished pieces, it has real value as a study or sketching set. It’s particularly useful for conserving higher-end pencils like Caran d’Ache when planning compositions or experimenting with palettes. Compared to Faber-Castell’s Classic line, KALOUR’s PDAS set offers better pigment, richer tones, and slightly more responsive laydown, even with its flaws. My opinion is based on my use of other, higher-end brands (Prismacolor, Derwent, etc).

I've seen dozens of product listings for Kalour colored pencils and always been curious about quality, especially with the countless positive reviews. After finally trying them, I can say they are good for the price and present a pretty reasonable value for what you get. I think they'll find their way into my sketchbooks, with the following caveats:

—These are soft and decently creamy, but not quite up to the level of Prismacolor Premier or anything higher, like Derwent.
—I've read in the past these are a blend of oil and wax (wax being the better, softer ideal for blending). I think that's why they're not quite as creamy as the other brands—possibly why they're also not as vibrant.
—I am a little concerned with longevity of these when blended into drawings. I don't have a lot of knowledge/experience, but not entirely sure if there's any negatives to having an oil-based pigment going over a water- or wax-based one. Would this break down over time? We'll see.

In the end, after wondering for some time, I'm glad I was finally able to try these out. Would I buy again? Honestly, probably not. For my specific uses and type of art, I'm really leaning into Derwent, with Prismacolor Premier as a fallback (since Derwents are so pricey).
