Dc Talk ~ Jesus Freak
麻豆区.ca
Jesus Freak, like the 1970s phrase that it's culled from, is an oddity. Who could have ever imagined such a wonderful blend of grunge rock, rap, melodic pop, and funk? "So Help Me God" sets the tone with a wicked guitar riff that draws boundaries for the trio's magic harmonies. "What If I Stumble?" and the vastly underrated "Between You and Me" allow Michael Tait to showcase his silky smooth vocals, while "Jesus Freak" and "Mind's Eye" prove the band can change speeds and rock as hard as anyone. For good measure, they even improve upon Charlie Peacock's "In the Light." One of the best Christian CDs of the '90s. --Michael Lyttle

- Reviewed in Canada on October 30, 2003Being a fan of many musical genres, it seemed only a matter of time before I began listening to Christian rock/rap/r&b/gospel/etc. I was first exposed to Christian artists such as Michael W. Smith and Steven Curtis Chapman. As my "secular" tastes changed, however, I wanted to explore more of Christian music's offerings. I found early on that most Christian artists who didn't sing gospel music were usually carbon copies of mainstream, secular bands who didn't sing about sex or drugs. Thankfully, the good Lord saw this and brought along groups such as PFR, the Newsboys and DC Talk. These groups sang their own style of music and revealed to us that Christianity isn't always good times at the church social, but an ever-changing lifestyle that brings with it persecution, humility and pain beyond mortal man's imagination.
Perhaps that is why I was originally drawn to "Jesus Freak" and a multitude of albums from other artists who were brave enough to stand up to the preachers and say, "You've got to reach out to people on terms that they understand."
You won't here Twila Paris or Sandi Patti singing about racism or how your personal image can destroy the impressionable minds of others. DC Talk does.
"What If I Stumble" is a question that I see very few so-called Christians asking themselves these days. With no intent to sound preachy or high and mighty, most folks these days who claim to be washed in the blood seem to wash their hands of those people that they should be reaching out to. I used to be a Protestant, but I grew weary of the hypocrites that I saw in the bar on Saturday and then the pew on Sunday. Now a Catholic, I realize that hypocrisy bleeds over into all religious belief systems, because there are just as many hypocritical Catholics as there are Protestants.
Moving on, "Jesus Freak" is the ultimate, in-your-face testament to being a Christian. But even it begs the question, "What will people think?" In the end, however, we learn that it doesn't matter what others think so long as we are living the way we should. There is no hiding your true self, advice which many Christians should heed.
"In the Light" is a Charlie Peacock tune that shows us a Christian struggling to be more like Jesus, and less like a man. It shows a person just how complicated internally that a real Christian can be.
"Colored People" may seem like a song about race on the surface, but its underlying theme is that we should not only get along with each other, but embrace each other for our differences instead of looking down on people whom we feel are less than us.
This album throws chinks in the armor of Christianity. It reveals the doubts and fears of true Christians, something rarely sung about in contemporary Christian music. Once again, it took rock n' roll to reveal what TRUE Christians are made of. They aren't perfect, and they know it. Yet they don't badger those who may not "look" as Christian as they do. You quickly realize that TRUE Christians are not some snobby group of people who try to force their beliefs on others, but they have fears and concerns like everybody else, and they do not alienate themselves from others because they are different. As a matter of fact, a true Christian WILL be in the bars on Saturday, but he'll bring a few friends to church with him on Sunday, instead of trying to hide from the other churchgoer he saw plastered on the sidewalk of a local dive.
Buy this album if you want a taste of real Christian concerns, and not the plastic Christianity that so many of us have to deal with each day.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 9, 2000This was, in fact, my very first christian album-EVER, and will continue to be my favorite(it is so worn out that I'm lucky if I can get it to play anymore!). dc Talk has alsways stuck me as one of the most insightful, inspiring, and sincere of all christian artists. In fact it was dc Talk and their music that led me to become the christian music fancatic (and the fanatical Christian) that I am today. For those of you who have trouble with the "unclarity" of their lyrics, let me say this. Need I remind you that music is art, (hence the name "christian ARTIST") Art comes from inside of you, from your thoughts and feelings, in dc Talk's case they write about their thoughts and feelings that they feel about God. They then take this and interpret it poetically. Whether it be their Christian walk, fears, doubts, dreams or ideas. I wouldn't suggest buying this album if you are bad at poetic interpretation, maybe try listening to some of their old stuff first, the message will be a whole lot clearer. Many Christian bands take on a more symbolic aspect to their music, which, under my terms is perfectly fine, in fact I think it provides a more creative angle and is most provacative. I have been to see dc Talk at their Supernatural Experience tour and I was extremely impressed by their testimonies and salvation message that they presented. They are most definitely all Christians. I have heard Toby McKeehan's testimony of how he was saved during high school at a christian basketball camp, and Michael Tait was raised a Christian, his father being a minister. I have yet to hear Kevin Max's but I am looking foreward to the opportunity of (hopefully) meeting him soon. If you have problems understanding dc Talk's efforts into the mainstream radio, try reading Bob Briner's "Roaring Lambs" they focus a lot on this same concept. Well, those are my thoughts on the lyrics. As for the basic sound of the album, let me just say that this is another reason that dc Talk is my favorite band- thier diversity in personality and sound. Micheal Tait and Kevin Max are amazing when it comes to the main vocals-They do great on the duets! Kevin Max has a voice like no other! Toby also does great with the few rap interludes(something I missed a little on Supernatural). These three sound terrific together vocally, and their band is awesome, too (which features the coolest bass player to walk the face of the earth-SugaBear!) In case you all don't know it, Kevin Max is also an awesome poet-which I think to be one of the reasons why dc Talk takes a more poetic approach to their lyrics (although McKeehan wrote most of them on Jesus Freak) This album doesn't really have an overall sound, It varies with each song (very cool) much as their albums do. If you like the rock sound of Jesus Freak and not so much the Hip-Hop aspect of it then I would reccomend Supernatural, but don't expect another Jesus Freak, You should try to understand the band's constantly changing style. Anyway, to clear up the misunderstanding of the phrase "Jesus Freak" in the context of this song, I took the liberty of looking up the word in the Webster's 2 New Riverside University Dictionary- Jesus Freak n. Slang. A member of a fundamentalist evangelical group, especially of young people, devoted to the teachings of Jesus. dc Talk themselves each give a great interpretation of the word in their new book "Jesus Freaks" compiled by dc and the Voice of the Martyrs foundation (I'd write them here but, hey, I only have 1,000 words) But anyways, This is one of dc Talk's best and I have only said it to be my favorite because it started me on the Christain music scene. I cannot say that any one of their albums could surpass any of their others, They are all so wonderful (even their corny old debut one!) I hope that you all enjoy this album as much as I did! To Him be the glory!

- Reviewed in Canada on September 30, 2007I was a Christian for a long time before I ever began listening to Christian music. I had a perception that all Christian music was the same - lame and boring. From time to time, a co-worker would play this CD inside our small workspace, and one day it just hit me - "Hey, this isn't bad!"
I picked up a copy for myself and played it over and over again. Suddenly, I wanted more. I started asking my co-worker for more bands like this one. On his recommendation, I picked up Delirious, Tree 63 and others. But this CD, which I still think is one of the best in contemporary Christian music, will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the start of my deep love for Christian music.
Too bad Dc Talk is not around anymore, because this is a great album. There is not one weak track on this CD, and there are some incredible standouts such as "In The Light" and "What Have We Become".

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound and style varies from song to song. As if Christian alternative had several genre is happening at once on the album.
Verified PurchaseDC talk left Christian rap/pop behind to lead the forefront charge of 90s Christian alternative. Jesus freak was the anthem song of most every teenager in 90s Christian culture. Thinking we would change the world as we grew Jesus freak porn fuel on the fire. But listen to the message, it's not one of changing the world but rather acknowledging Christ and taking unabashed risk for it. Knowing right off the bat you will not be the popular crowd and you may well be the next Jesus freak to have their head taken off. But you don't mind that risk. Because the king rewards his servants greater than what sticking around in this life can provide.
The rest of the album is great. Though the sound might be slightly dated my 12-year-old daughter who had never heard the album loved it! The messages within could all have been written today. But at the same time may not have been written in this day and age. Because the kings of the earth might be taking the heads of Jesus freaks soon, and being a Jesus freak is overrated. And the things of this world we can feel and they feel nice. We all said we were Jesus freaks back in the 90s. If we are honest with ourselves can we say it today? To quote a line in between songs on the album, we acknowledge Jesus by our lips but deny him by our lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.

4.0 out of 5 stars 隠れた名作なんですかね、やっぱり
Verified Purchase
