ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The story of Moctezuma's only heir told like never before.

1521, the Aztec empire collapses. Tecuixpo, Moctezuma's favorite daughter, is taken prisoner by the Spanish conquerors, who are responsible for her father's death and the bloody defeat of her people. Now, baptized as Isabel, she is forced to live according to the customs and religion of her captors.

Immersed in a world of intrigue, betrayal, and death, life has a final blow reserved for her: her first daughter will be taken away by Hernán Cortés, the man she hates the most. Decades later, Leonor, a young orphan and mestizo, will have to face all those who, upon her return to New Spain, want to keep her subdued to hide the extraordinary inheritance that belongs to her.

La otra Isabel is the monumental adventure of the last tlahtoani's daughter, who lost her name, her empire, and her family, but never gave in. In this extraordinary novel, Laura Martínez-Belli perfectly weaves historical fiction with the suspense of the most revealing political thriller.

The destiny of the blood is unstoppable.

The title alone sparks curiosity. Upon delving into the novel, one learns that this is the daughter of Moctezuma, a true Aztec Princess who managed to float on the wind and thus survive. Well written with such descriptive language, the novel strained and then augmented my bilingual ability. It's a story of the Conquest, yes, but so much more. It doesn't shy away from the ugly, reveling in it at times so that the reader can almost touch the dark. And through it all shines Copo de Algodón, la otra Isabel, bridging both cultures and forming a new. A true heroine.
Fans of history, scholars of the Conquest will enjoy another take on the events. We know of the Spaniards' version of La Noche Triste, now let's hear of not only the Aztec, but of the Aztec prisoners forced to flee with the Spaniards. A work of fiction it is, but look up the facts and one will find they track.
So much of the Conquest is viewed in a negative light (as befitting the definition of a Conquest.) And, as with most of history, so much of our knowledge is of male characters. It's refreshing to find a female to stand with, to champion. Isabel Moctezuma is just whom we need, both then and now.
