I ordered this when I needed to re-hang a rotten garage door, where I was a fool and took down the old one before I had a plan for replacing it with a new one.

The new door had no holes cut in it for the locks.

I've never done this before.

Well, this kit did not arrive in time, I had the door set in the garage frame but it was windy and kept blowing so I had to go figure it out with a drill and a chisel and no guide.

I felt stupid and ridiculous figuring it out by myself.

Then later this jig arrived and I looked over it with envy and rage because I could literally see, right on it, how it would have made the job, that I just did, much easier.

Would this have worked? YES.

Would it have saved me a lot of time? YES!

Would it have saved me a lot of frustration? YES.

Would it have given me enough confidence to do more DIY projects? YES.

Is it worth it for 1 door? No. But 2+ doors? Yes. Especially if you have nice doors, don't take the risk buy the jig.

This seller also sells hinge jigs which I presume I would have the same opinion about, totally worth it.

You can also be the hero and help everyone else who's going to see your lovely new doors and then want new ones of their own. It's one of the biggest upgrades to a living space, to go from looking cheap to looking fancy.

Value-wise it's expensive for $55 (CAD), but now compare the cost of the door and getting the measurement wrong or skipping the circular saw across the face of it when it catches on a rough fiber. Everything this company makes is high quality, well machined, no defects, proper fit and finish. I'm not going to subtract a star for value, if you want a cheap plastic kit then get one of those. This one is a high end, machined aluminum jig. 5-stars for someone who wants a 5-star product.

This jig is put together really well. The aluminum body feels solid, the machining is clean, and it clamps onto the door without slipping or marking anything. Once it is tightened down it stays where you put it. The alignment window, markings, and guide holes make it easy to see what you are doing.

Setup is simple. You slide the included bits into the guide sleeves, add the springs, and tighten the set screws on the capture rings so the bits stay locked in. Then you pick the backset you need, move the guide pins as needed, clamp the jig to the door at the right height, and set the door thickness position for the latch hole sub jig. After that you drill the face hole and the latch hole using the two bits you installed at the start. The drill guide sleeves keep the bits from wandering and the holes come out clean and square on a wood door.

The limits show up when you move outside the standard ranges. My new interior wood doors will be fine, but the old exterior doors we are reusing are steel and have a deeper setback than the two common ones this jig supports. I need to match that layout for new deadbolts, and this jig cannot help with that since it is only for wood doors, does not take other bits or hole saws, and does not offer a deeper setback option. Not a flaw, just something to know if you are dealing with older or nonstandard doors or hardware.

I was curious if they would fit, but found that none of my own forstner bits fit this jig. The included bits use a specific shaft size and length with locking rings and set screws. My bits do not match that, so you are limited to the ones that come with the kit unless you buy others made for this style.

For standard wood doors with normal hardware, this jig does exactly what it should. It is sturdy, accurate, and easy to work with, and within the ranges it is designed for it performs very well.

As a carpenter I am used to fitting door latches the traditional way .
You really need to try this out on a old door or similar thickness of timber as a door is, so you don`t mess a new door up. Trying it out first to give you confidence of how it works .
This is not quite the right size I needed, it would have been great to have interchangeable drill bit sizes.
It would also have been good to have some protective padding on the surface to ensure no damage is done to the door surface.
Where this tool comes into its own , is the ability to make a small hole in the face of the door bigger, as once in position it won`t wander around , and you do not need to have anything to support the drill bit as it held in place with the clamp.
It is well made and should last a while if looked after as any tool should be.
I will make a small wooden box for this as added protection for rather than the cardboard box it came in.
The drill bits are of course sharp as you would expect , would have been good to have a protective cover over the drill bits.

This is so useful to make sure you are dead center to the thickness of your door. The provided bits are nice and sharp and produce an exact and tidy cut. Excellent instructions and easy to use and work out what you have to do. Good adjustment for different door widths.
The whole thing is very well constructed and looks like it will last forever.
Considering how much it will cost you if you muck up the job and buy a new door, £35.99 at time of purchase is very good value.
Now we just have to pluck up the courage to try it on an actual door.
