Dial indicator is a handy yet precision engineered tool letting me scrub across flat horizontal sheet metal, positioned onto vertical planes or even going around concentric shapes. The ergonomic boom arm pivots to align while stabilizing the dial using magnetic anchoring on the heavy duty metal base and rigid tightening knobs. Its precise when close to zero dial position yet also spans to handle wider range of measurement for working on larger surface areas. That's where having its set of 22 removable contacts of pointed sub 1mm to 4mm matters. Solidly engineered system and fits inside a blow molded hard toolbox to store and protect both measurement dial and base.

    For the price, I think it deserve 5 star right now ! You get a kit that pretty nice and will probably offer all the need of the DIY for the few jobs he will use it for. Would I use this to make part for a space rocket ? NO ! Would I use it to see if my part are straight, sure !

    You do get a lot of specialized gear for the price I think. So it why it get 5star, BUT don't expect miracle from it.

    You get a 1" range gauge, magnetic stand, different contact points and a case to contain it all. It's a fairly basic set, and it works. The gauge isn't as smooth as a higher-end one but that's expected for the price. The stand is magnetic so it can be tricky to find a place to put on a modern engine considering everything these days is either aluminum or plastic, so this is more useful in a machine shop where ferrous materials are the norm. You COULD use it for backlash measurement, but I prefer the vice-grip style stands for that.. it's too easy to knock a magnetic stand off of the differential housing because of the odd angles.

    I really wish the contact point set would've come with a roller bearing contact point. As it stands you get plain and roller ball points in convex and pointed shapes, some with a bend for hard to reach places. Still very useful, but I'd love if a roller bearing point had been included (useful for measuring bent rotors etc.)

    Overall a decent starter set for someone needing something like this in their garage.

    For the money, this is a pretty decent dial indicator.

    For an amateur DIYer like me, this pretty much hits the mark for price/performance. Obviously this is not a German or British-made precision instrument, but it is also not sold for those high prices. For me, my needs for a dial indicator are somewhat infrequent and fairly simple, like checking out the run-out on a car wheel or brake rotor, etc. I don't need super high precision.

    With that in mind, this kit gives you a lot for the money. The dial gauge holder is pretty sturdy once you lock it in, and it has a fine adjuster. The magnetic base holds well, assuming you have a thick enough ferrous surface to mount it.

    The dial gauge itself seems to be pretty repeatable. It's actually not bad at all. Pretty surprised there.

    And finally, the storage case is a good feature, since in my circumstance, it's going to be stored for most of the time!

    Overall, this is nothing special, but quite adequate for the home-gamer.
