James Mangold takes Stephen Spielberg's legacy and cements it. He also leaves us with a much stronger and better coda with D.O.D. Was it perfect, no. Was it a good bit of high adventure meant for the big screen and lovely send off to an iconic cinematic character? Absolutely. My review follows below.

The de-aging cgi played well and was not used overlong. The promos for the film intimated time travel and of a trip back to WWII with Indiana Jones chasing the villain du jour Dr. Voller (Mads Mikkelson) to prevent an apocalyptic event but the film quickly evolves past this trope via Mangold's capable direction and we instead get a cool flashback with Indy in his prime with friend Basil Shaw (Toby Jones) racing against Nazis, a villain of choice for three Indy films, to obtain a sacred relic, the spear of Longinus, the weapon that pierced the side of Jesus and is purportedly imbued with mystical powers. Hitler's obsession with mystic objects to turn the tide of war is well documented and mined in various films and lore.

Voller, however, like Jones is a man of science and history and recognizes the item as a fake before offering that he seeks an item of true power, Archimedes dial, the "Antikythera". As Jones and Shaw attempt to escape a train flying toward Allied bullets, he recognizes the artifact for what it is and the antipathy between he and Voller begins. The race atop the train is as good a cinematic sequence as any top-level action film. It is unfortunate that moviegoers have become so jaded as to not regard this as anything other than a standard action sequence.

Mangold manages to ignite the drama of high adventure that Stephen Spielberg seemed to manage so effortlessly back in the day. That Spielberg paid Mangold a massive compliment stating he couldn't have done a better job on the film himself was a proper kudo.

The film's promo materials very much intimated a back and forth time travel race but instead we got a piece of cinema that offered something stronger and better developed. After Shaw and Indy successfully escape, we fast forward to present day 1969 where Jones is presently a disenfranchised professor 'spoon feeing' his students whose interest gravitates more to the new, namely the moon landing and astronauts than the past. We learn that Indiana Jones' life has come apart somewhat with the loss of his son and the imminent dissolution of his marriage to Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen). Through a brief moment in his classroom, Indy reconnects with his past via his goddaughter, Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridges).

Waller Bridges is very much at easy playing a scamp, femme fatale with blistering wit and intelligence. She is both Indy's foil and nigh villainous counterpoint. Her father's back story namely his descent into madness over the Antikythera links past with present and fleshes out Helena's current motivations and darker character. Helena is well written and presents a version of what might have been with Indy back in his Raiders days. Like him, however, she has an element of humanity, presented via her connection with her protege/friend Teddy (Ethann Isidore). The dynamic between her and Teddy hearkens to Indy's own relationship with Short Round (Ke Huy Kwan) in the underappreciated "Temple of Doom". This dynamic expands to include Indy giving him proper banter between the two and allowing him his curmudgeonly greatness.

Jurgen Voller is not Mads Mikkelson's greatest work, but as with many of his villains, he manages to make him more than he could be. Voller is cerebral, cunning and like Jones, a man who seeks knowledge via the past. He diverges from Jones' path via his goal of rewriting the past to suit his ideations of supremacy. His entourage includes Boyd Holbrook's Klaber, a role which offers little more than standard crazy henchman fare. Olivier Richters as "Hauke" manages to at least look impressive with his 7 ft. 2 bank vault frame. His presence as Voller's enforcer also manages to serve another purpose, to remind the audience that this isn't yesteryear's Indy. While Harrison Ford is playing a character in his late sixties, he is in actuality 81. As such, any on screen battle featuring him beating up the hale and hearty Mikkelson who is in his forties and much larger would not play well. Even less so would Indy kicking ass with a man as huge as Hauke. As such, we are visited with a wilier, more cunning Jones. His acrimonious partnership with Helena allows her to take point with the physical aspect, noting that Waller Bridges did the majority of her own stunts.

Where the film truly rises, setting itself apart from the preceding film as a proper sendoff is in its denouement/finale. Voller's end goal is met with a challenge and caution by Jones which in turn leads to one of the film's most unexpected and gonzo moments, an unpredictable battle scene tying into the Antikythera's originator. The notion of mathematics mired with some hard sci fi regarding time travel also played well, allowing for a more grounded than supernatural approach.

Ultimately, this is Indy's last ride. All parties have agreed to it. The return of Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) and Marion (Karen Allen) allowed for varying full circle moments. The ending is picture perfect, giving the audience the finale, they deserve and allowing a well-earned ride into the sunset.

Let's get this out of the way first: yes, Harrison Ford is old, and was filming this in his late 70s. And still doing some of his own stunts (enough to injure himself on set) which is impressive enough. But if anyone dismisses this film because "Indiana Jones is old," dismiss them. Or at least their criticism.

To borrow an observation from Joe Hill the first twenty minutes of Dial of Destiny is like lost footage from an earlier Indy film. A de-aged Indiana Jones battles Nazis on a speeding train, and this scene alone is better than anything Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or even Temple of Doom has to offer (look, I love Short Round as much as the next film fan but that movie has aged the least gracefully of any in the series).

It's in this opening sequence that we meet the films primary antagonist, Dr Jürgen Voller, portrayed in an icy, understated fashion by Mads Mikkelsen- who is brilliant in every scene and leaves his mark as the most memorable Indy villain of all perhaps, at least in terms of acting. Without giving away too much plot, when Dr. Jones and Voller cross paths again years later, the premise is feasible: he's essentially one of the Nazi minds brought to America under Operation Paperclip, to help win the space race.

None of that, however, is the focus of the film, something early spoilers got completely wrong (no Indy doesn't go to the moon). Instead, the MacGuffin in Dial of Destiny is a fictionalized version of the Antikythera mechanism, though what the Indyverse version of the device can do, it's real life counterpart clearly cannot.

The newer characters (and specifically Indy's goddaughter) don't steal the show, so again spoilers missed the mark here. No one is taking over, and no torch is being passed. Antonio Banderas, in a smaller role, is perhaps the best addition. What this film brings about, besides one last adventure and some familiar faces (including the great John Rhys-Davies as Sallah), is closure. On more than one front, and as a result, Harrison Ford gets to do perhaps the most actual acting (some truly poignant) of any film in the series. I'll avoid spoilers here, but the issue of family is addressed and Ford's delivery is heartbreaking.

Is this the best Indiana Jones movie? Of course not! Raiders and Holy Grail will forever battle it out for that honour. I put it right in the middle of the pack however, and it's certainly a better way to close out the series than had things just ended with Crystal Skull (which I didn't hate but boy was that CGI bad).

Not bad overall, this film is thrilling in its initial set-up, showing Indiana still fighting Nazis during WWII. The general premise surprised me in execution however. That the artifact can do whatever it does is one thing, but in the aftermath of the popularization of the knowledge about the strong supremacist and fascist element within the United States, it was a terribly lost opportunity to *not* have incorporated such moral confrontation into the tale. Frankly, this was something I was expecting. To not have done so seems starkly intentionally avoided, here.

More of the initial de-aged Ford would have and still would be ideal - that worked the best.

I watched this movie Christmas Day. I ordered this with the understanding it was coming after Christmas, but got it in two days--just in time for Christmas! So far I have seen this DVD on sale only on 鶹. Walmart doesn't have it--I went there personally to check. Strangly enough not even Target has it--I went there personally to check! I guess they are allowing 鶹 to bring in the stash of cash all by themselves without any competition. I would have picked it up at Target if they had it because I wanted it right away. But 鶹 delivered.

I was screaming in delight later in the movie to the scenes that could have been designed for Star Trek the Next Generation. It is an over the top never ending thrilling movie from the start to end. You're in the 40's then the 60's, in the Middle East, Sicily, caves, underwater, planes, you name it! I was just thinking where are the large black spiders when there were cave scenes. It was only a few seconds later, there were jungle sized bugs! You get it all in this movie. You will have to love the final scenes & the ends to the Nazis. Scrumdiddlyumptious. I was literally out of my seat with total surprise & delight.

I had to check online to try to see if the subway stairs & horse scene was fake, but for the moment, I was not able to find out. In any case, the horse remained unharmed as I am sure some parts of the scenes were designed not real. This is not to say that if indeed the subway stair scene was real, then the horse was indeed exploited & risked serious injury--all exploitation is a manifestation of violence. In the former movie, some forest was destroyed for the film. I cannot support that either--any type of violence whether it be against sentient beings or any inch of forest. The eel scene has to be fake so there is no more animal exploiation or harm to animals. There is lots of fake violence toward other humans. But it is all fake.

My suggestion to this successful franchise is to make other ones with a new nephew of Indiana Jones--someone--a young serious, studious professor with glasses, tossled black hair on his forehead--not long hair, however. I would like to see this continue--without the use of any animals or destruction of forests. I don't see how this spectacular movie would result in a total end to the franchise--especially because we are getting better & better with AI & inventing more exciting scenes! If you don't know already how it ends, as I had no clue on any part of the film, you will be sitting at the edge of your couch screaming in delight. How on earth did they invent such an entertaining film? Keep at it please & don't stop now.
