&;One of the major autobiographies of the African-American tradition.&;&;Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

&;It has been painful to me, in many ways, to recall the dreary years I passed in bondage. I would gladly forget them if I could. Yet the retrospection is not altogether without solace; for with these gloomy recollections come tender memories of my good old grandmother, like light fleecy clouds floating over a dark and troubled sea.&;

One of the most memorable slave narratives, Harriet Jacobs&;s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl illustrates the overarching evil and pervasive depravity of the institution of slavery. In great and painful detail, Jacobs describes her life as a Southern slave, the exploitation that haunted her daily life, her abuse by her master, the involvement she sought with another white man in order to escape her master, and her determination to win freedom for herself and her children. From her seven years of hiding in a garret that was three feet high, to her harrowing escape north to a reunion with her children and freedom, Jacobs&;s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl remains an outstanding example of one woman&;s extraordinary courage in the face of almost unbeatable odds, as well as one of the most significant testimonials in American history.

    Slavery is a barbaric institution. This first person true story reveals what life was really like for many slaves in the American south in the 19th century. Slave ownership meant for the author that she had zero rights and was forced to do anything the owner or his family wished. There was no concept of fairness, honesty, or commitment between the owner and her. The resilience of the author is overwhelming; she spent more than 5 years hiding in a tiny enclosure to escape from her owner in order that she could eventually look out for her two children.
    This was a sad period in the history of the United States - it took a civil war to get beyond it.
    Slavery was an example of extreme racism but some of the message still holds today.

    Harriet Jacob¡¯s autobiography is a must-read, if only to educate society about how easily oppressive people assume they have a right to intentionally hurt others. We must stand up to bullies and oppressors to ensure we are not ¡°the silent majority¡± that allow awful situations to slide until it¡¯s too late to reverse their impact. Pick up this book, and take your time reading it. Absorb Harriet¡¯s experiences. You will be a better human being for having done so.

    What a great story. Very impactful and written from her own words, as if she is speaking it.

    I found that the book was well written and the life this girl had was terrible. I cannot understand how one can hurt a human being and think that they have no feelings. The pain and the hurt placed on this person and all her family and friends. I wish I had been around at that time and been there to help.

    5.0 out of 5 stars "Through the female slave glass"- ¨¤ travers les yeux de la femme esclave

    I perceived this small book the way a jury would hear the big story of a woman(who once was a girl). I remain struck by the gender difference in the impact of slavery (violence for males and rape/abuse til maternity for females) and deeper struck by the very young/ mothers/grand-mothers' voices (better have one's baby die than it be: starved/be a slave/sold soon/raped when teen...) so many issues that are not so often brought to light...
Tant de questions si peu souvent sorties de l'obscurit¨¦...Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

    Such strength of character. Such willpower.
    I take my hat off to all the slaves who suffered so badly at the hands of their white masters.
    It makes me feel ashamed to be white and know what my race did to those poor people and how they profited from them and even today continue to despise them. Disgusting!
