- Reviewed in Canada on May 20, 2025Verified PurchaseIt did the job, got abused, and still feels like new. 2013 VW Jetta.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 30, 2024Verified PurchaseThis tool made what would have been a tricky job -- perfect for spreading suspension struts when working on my vehicle. It’s definitely compact, feels durable, and it is designed specifically to fit into the tight spaces where strut work can be challenging.
The fit was precise, and the build quality is pretty good. It feels sturdy and well-constructed, handling the torque required without any signs of wear. The unique design allows for controlled spreading of the strut housing, making shock absorber replacement or front-end suspension repairs far less time-consuming.
One minor tip: make sure you clean the strut area before use to prevent grit or debris from interfering with the tool's operation. Also, while this tool is designed for VW, it may work with other cars, though you’ll want to confirm compatibility first.
Personally, i think this is a must-have for your toolkit if you're tackling suspension repairs. It saved me time, effort, and frustration. Solid recommendation.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 12, 2023Verified PurchaseI got this strut spreader to help me replace the ball joint on the front lower control arms of my 2012 Audi Q5. It worked as expected and made the job a lot easier. I learned the hard way that if you forget to loosen the cinching bolt before using the strut spreader, it will dent the aluminum alloy control arm.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2024Verified PurchaseWorked exactly as it's supposed to. Expanded the cup so I could get the strut started, then put the wheel back on and lowered the car to seat it. Hole was then lined up perfectly for pinch bolt. Why Canadian tire or Princess auto don't stock this awesome little tool is beyond me.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 12, 2023Verified PurchaseI found it was a toss up between this tool and hammering in a chisel / punch.
Either works, either requires being careful not to go too far, and often one of these will be better depending on the angle of the part and room needed for other tools.
This one worked well for the lower middle balljoint on the VW/ Audi/ Porsche/ Bentley five link front suspension. This balljoint will usually slide out of the pinch joint easily with light tapping or even thumb pressure when it is spread adequately. Careful though, the margin between convenient re & re and permanent deformation using a chisel isn't huge. This tool doesn't get wide enough for that risk which is great, but it also means that it's finicky to keep it at it's most effective width as it can slip.
I'd say the bit shape could be improved to be slightly wider at it's widest point, and to have a sharper radius producing a flat profile in the "open" position as it can slide out of place too easily sometimes and close the pinch joint.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 9, 2024Verified PurchaseMade the job much easier!
- Reviewed in Canada on June 17, 2025Verified PurchaseI agree with other purchasers that this tool simply isn't wide enough to adequately spread the strut clamp, at least on my A4 Jetta.

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked and it's afordable
Verified PurchaseI own the more expensive version of this (metalnerd) and misplaced it. I bought this thinking I may one day find my other unit so I would keep this as a back. Used this one last weekend and I can honestly say it worked just as good. Not confident this would hold up to regular use, but if you're a DIY mechanic like me who uses this once every few years than I would give this a shot. Aftermarket and factory shock slipped in with little effort (some wd40 or similar helps).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool cuts service time in half.
Verified PurchaseTool worked the way it was designed to. I use this in the professional automotive field performing front end work and various makes and models. Works great to remove those struts with strut forks and those pinch style spindles found on most European vehicles. Definitely beats banging the spindle with your hammer. Or worse having to bring out the air hammer. Payed for itself after the first time using it. Definitely recommend if your performing suspension work or front end work at your shop frequently. Great investment and time saver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necessity when removing mkv VW struts
Verified PurchaseThis tool served fantastically this last weekend. I replaced my stock springs with some performance lowering springs on my 08 VW rabbit. This tool proved itself essential in the process. It worked very well and still looks like it did when I received it even after the abuse during install. Sure you could try and use a screwdriver or a claw Crow bar, but this thing is small and stays put and out of your way while your working. I would highly recommend spending the cash on this tool if your considering any work on your struts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for suspension work
Verified PurchaseDefinitely worth it if you have a European car and planning to do work on the suspension. Makes life a lot easier. It's also pretty strong. I thought it would break, but if works great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great helper, but still be prepared to persuade old parts apart.
Verified PurchaseDoes the job well, only complaint is that rust between the parts can build up over the years and make the tool (which was definitely designed to separate like-new parts) get it almost open and then need a light hammer tap to separate the knuckle from the strut, but that isn't the tool's fault. Just be prepared to still persuade the part just a little along with using this tool.
