How to Read the Bible
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
鶹
The Bible is the heart of devotional practice, a source of guidance and inspiration rich with insightful life lessons. On the other side of the spectrum, academics have studied the Bible using scientific analysis to examine its historical significance and meaning. The gap between these readings has resulted in a schism with far-reaching implications: Without historical context, ordinary people are left to interpret the Bible literally, while academic readings overlook the deeply personal connections established in church pews, choir benches, and backyard study groups.
In How to Read the Bible, Cox explores three different lenses commonly used to bring the Bible into focus:
- Literary - as narrative stories of family conflict, stirring heroism, and moral dilemmas;
- History - as classic texts with academic and theological applications; and
- Activism - as a source of dialogue and engagement to be shared and applied to our lives.
By bringing these together, Cox shows the Bible in all its rich diversity and meaning and offers us a contemporary activist version that wrestles with issues of feminism, war, homosexuality, and race. The result is a living resource that is perpetually evolving as our understanding changes and deepens from generation to generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars An informative and fascinating book
Verified PurchaseI enjoyed this book immensely. I think I would classify it more on the liberal side, however I think that the author was very respectful of the bible and its message. In fact he spoke very highly of the devotional aspect of the bible, which is highly ridiculed today. I liked how he discussed both the academic and devotional aspects of the bible and how they can complement each other. Overall this book helped me gain some new perspectives on how I can get the most out of my bible reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Public Seminar in Bible Reading
Verified PurchaseThe text is most readable; yet behind every page is current, leading scholarship. A demonstration of the value of contemporary scholarship spiritually, intellectually and socially.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, from a wise and experienced believer
Verified PurchaseThis isn't addressed to the academic crowd, though it is definitely a serious and thought provoking set of suggestions about how to read the Bible. It's meant for believers in the trenches - the modern world.
Harvey Cox was widely known in the 60s and 70s for his views on the role of Christianity in the world - his essay on the Playboy Philosophy is the single best thing I have read on the Christian view of sexuality. I should specify mainline Christian denominations (and in the 60s, when it was written) when I describe it this way - the loudest voices in modern American Christianity might not agree.
I doubt that those who are in agreement with the modern conservative evangelical version of Christianity would like this book very much, but the large number of believers who are not so politically oriented may find much to think about, and to enrich their faith, in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faith and understanding can coincide...
Verified PurchaseDeep respect for the writers of scripture doesn't have to be sacrificed for intelligent context. Anyone who wants to understand the Who, What, When, Where and Why of the Bible, without going through years of seminary study, should have this wonderfully written and easy to comprehend book. A brilliant read for Jews, Christians, and those who are simply curious.
Harvey Cox is a respected biblical scholar, who brings every aspect of the magnificent bible books, both old and new testament, into the light of understanding and clarity; even Revelation! I intend to read it again and again...

5.0 out of 5 stars bible study
Verified PurchaseOne might expect this book to be boring by its title. It is not. It is written in user-friendly style and is a common sense approach that students of any belief can reap benefits.
