"The perfect pick to really light a fire under my book club, and yours....A reminder that goodness, and books, can still win in this world." —New York Times Book Review
"A beautiful, big-hearted treasureof a novel." —Lily King
National Bestseller * From the award-winning author ofThe One-in-a-Million Boycomes a heartfelt, uplifting novel about a chance encounter at a bookstore, exploring redemption, unlikely friendships, and the life-changing power of sharing stories.
Our Reasons meet us in the morning and whisper to us at night. Mine is an innocent, unsuspecting, eternally sixty-one-year-old woman named Lorraine Daigle…
Violet Powell, a twenty-two-year-old from rural Abbott Falls, Maine, is being released from prison after serving twenty-two months for a drunk-driving crash that killed a local kindergarten teacher.
Harriet Larson, a retired English teacher who runs the prison book club, is facing the unsettling prospect of an empty nest.
Frank Daigle, a retired machinist, hasn’t yet come to grips with the complications of his marriage to the woman Violet killed.
When the three encounter each other one morning in a bookstore in Portland—Violet to buy the novel she was reading in the prison book club before her release, Harriet to choose the next title for the women who remain, and Frank to dispatch his duties as the store handyman—their lives begin to intersect in transformative ways.
How to Read a Bookis an unsparingly honest and profoundly hopeful story about letting go of guilt, seizing second chances, and the power of books to change our lives. With the heart, wit, grace, and depth of understanding that has characterized her work, Monica Wood illuminates the decisions that define a life and the kindnesses that make life worth living.

"The perfect pick to really light a fire under my book club, and yours....A charming, openhearted novel, deceptively easy to read but layered with sharp observations, hard truths and rich ideas....Nudges the conscience as much as it pulls at the heartstrings....This novel is a reminder that goodness, and books, can still win in this world." — New York Times Book Review
"An utter gem; funny, sweet, and moving." — People
"I laughed and wept my way straight through How to Read a Book. What a beautiful, big-hearted treasureof a novel!"
— Lily King, New York Times bestselling author of Euphoria and Writers
"Monica Wood’s engaging novel of fresh starts follows Violet, a 20-something woman fresh out of prison; Harriet, a retiree who leads a book club inside the women’s prison; and Frank, the retired machinist whose wife was killed in the hit-and-run for which Violet served time. Shot through with clever asides and spiky feelings, the story ponders trust, reformation, and forgiveness." — Christian Science Monitor
"Gorgeously told...A finely wrought story, with deeply memorable characters." — Kirkus Reviews(starred review)

“What a master of plot and character Monica Wood is.I love the various worldsHow to Read a Booktook me to: a prison, abookshop, andalaboratory, allin Portland, Maine. And I love how hopefullyWood writes about grief and second chances on behalf of her three protagonists.Surely everyone who reads this novel will want to offer Ollie, a voluble African grey parrot, a home.” — Margot Livesey,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Boy in the FieldandThe Flight of Gemma Hardy
“A young female ex-con, a widower who was collateral damage, and a woman who runs the prison bookclub—three indelible voices (and let’s not forget one extraordinary parrot's), remind us that life is full of mysteries, and sometimes the ones webelieve are unsolvable as the ones that might save us.About second chances (our lives need not be apologies), the weight of forgiveness, our bond with our books, and the stubborn way love can make us see a world shining with mercy, Wood’s new novel is both incandescent and unforgettable.” — Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of With or Without You and Pictures of You

- Reviewed in Canada on March 17, 2025The story was ok until it went on and on. Frankly there were many places this book could end, but it just wouldn’t. Of course she got taken advantage of by a married man. Doh! Saw that one coming.
I tried to like it. I did like it, but then it got very old and predictable in those last few chapters.
Skip it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in five years. Brilliant!
Verified PurchaseI read a lot. This is the best book I've read in the last five years. The writing is gorgeous. The plot is simple and straightforward, except when it's not. The main characters are absolutely compelling. You cheer for them, cringe when they make mistakes, cry at their misfortunes.
This book is like reading an onion, with more and more depths as you peel through one layer of each character's humanity and discover another vibrant, astonishing layer underneath.
This charming, engaging story reminds you that none of us are simple, none of us are perfect, and all of us are worthy and capable in our own way. It is a brilliant book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different kind of story …
Verified PurchaseWell, it wasn’t one of those heart-pounding stories that you can’t put down, but it does draw you in. The characters were all so like-able. 3 main characters, Violet, Harriet and Frank, all with great lives to learn about. And the brilliant parrots, who were beyond entertaining. Just a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars This story surprised me in how lovely it became
Verified PurchaseThis story surprised me in how lovely it became. I have learned through this Monica Woods story that her style is incredibly pleasant and heart warming. The lessons are nicely told and the characters so likeable. Modern day parables told in a manner to last a long time in your memory. This story imprinted her voice in my mind, and I will be looking for more of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maine is like an old , sofa couch
Verified PurchaseWhen I started this book I had no idea that it was set in Maine. So familiar to me, this book was one I woke up to read at 2:00 a.m.
The characters we so human, alive yet stalled in place. I loved watching each evolved and find a bit more about themselves and life in general. As I approach the winter of my life, I truly appreciate a book that makes me think about the happy, sad, poignant moments in living and loving. A book about relationships. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous read !
Verified PurchaseWhen I first considered this book I rejected it as cheesy. Later I found it was available from my library and decided to give it a chance. I am so glad I gave it a chance! The three main characters were so real. All had flaws, but they learned from their mistakes and grew. Since I borrowed this book from my library, I will be buying a copy, because it is the kind of book I will read again! It was a fabulous story!
