House of Blight Audio CD – Unabridged, April 8 2025
鶹
"House of Blight is one of those books I had trouble putting down. I loved the totally unique magic system and the eerie but cozy setting... A must-read for any romantasy lover!" -- NISHA J. TULI, internationally bestselling author of Trial of the Sun Queen?
The first novel in an eerie, darkly creative, and romantic new gothic fantasy duology from Maxym M. Martineau, for readers of Sarah J. Maas and Rachel Gillig.
Edira Brillwyn is a threadmender. She holds a rare, lifesaving power that can cure disease and heal injuries in the blink of an eye. But magic always comes with a cost, and saving anyone sacrifices a sliver of her own life. She's always kept her abilities hidden...until the powerful Fernglove family discovers her secret.
The Ferngloves are charming and beautiful, possess powerful magic, and don't take no for an answer--especially Orin, the head of these ruling elites. When Edira's brothers unexpectedly contract blight--an incurable virus killing people throughout the town, and an illness too strong for her to heal them both--Orin offers to help. Together at his estate they'll research a cure while Orin slows their sickness and Edira hones her magic. His kindness and honesty surprises Edira, as does her undeniable attraction to him.
But the other Ferngloves are suspicious of her power and may be more dangerous than the ever-present disease. The longer Edira stays within the confines of the Manor, the more the family's pristine exterior begins to crack--until Edira discovers a terrifying secret and must choose who she can save and at what cost...

Genre: gothic romantasy
Themes: magic, the seen vs. Unseen

This was truly an original and wildly imaginative tale. A world in which nothing is really quite as it seems and trust should not be given freely. Imbued with fae magic twisted with magical creatures, this death defying race seeks power and immortality above all else. Yet where there is treachery and ill intent, there is also beauty and allure. This is the kind of gothic fae romance you really can’t put down, with danger lurking around every corner and attraction brewing where it should not. I attest to this by staying up until dawn to finish reading this book!
Edira is hiding her true power, for the gift of threadmending is highly coveted, but one that comes at a high cost. For this lifesaving power cuts threads of her own life with every use. She has been told to keep it secret, to keep it safe, and not to use it for any reason. Yet the bonds of family are difficult to disregard and when both of her brothers contract the deadly blight, she will stop at nothing to find a cure, one which the everlasting Ferngloves promise. As she is whisked away to the Fernglove Manor, she works together with the head of the family Orin to research and experiment. Orin’s offer to help and his kindness are a surprising revelation that shatters Edira’s mistrust of the Evers. While Orin remains gallant and all charm, the rest of the family are far more dangerous. Beneath the shiny veneer of this golden family lies dark secrets and twisted magic. With the cost so high, Edira will have to choose who she will save as her world and discoveries becomes more and more complex.
This was delightful to read. A story full of intrigue and deadly attractions all woven together. Where what one sees cannot fully be trusted and the truth is an elusive idea hidden behind layers of glamour and lies. And I mean any book that starts with an interaction with death incarnate is sure to capture my attention. I loved it and Edira was an interesting character to follow. True, gothic romances in general tend to have that quality where you want to scream and shake logic into the FMC. The signs were all there and yet Edira quickly disregarded her mistrust of the Evers, but she was endearing in the need to protect her family and imperfect in that perfect way. So you can predict a fair amount of this plot, but there were still a few surprises. More than that, the eerie quality of the dark manor and the magic were more than enough to cast a spell of enchantment. A true feast for the senses and I am very much looking forward to the next instalment in this duology!

I can’t say there is a single thing I disliked in this book. What an amazing piece of work! I’m wholly impressed and pleased.
The pace of the book was perfect, the story line is great!
Orin was great but I love the chemistry between Edira and Rorik!! I think the villain in the story was written well and was so hard to notice at the start but once the facade started to crack, we could see the underlying blight within him in more ways than one.
I will absolutely be recommending this and can’t wait for the next instalment!
“One of these days, Rorik, I’ll pin you to the ground beneath my boots, and you’ll pray I’m wearing a skirt so you at least see something nice before I spit in your face.”
Thank you for sending me this in advance!
- Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2025I really enjoyed this! From the world building to the magic system, to family dynamics! I just couldn’t put this down.
I’m so pumped this is a duology because I need the next books, and I need a special edition of House Of Blight.

Omg the rollercoaster House of Blight took me on!! 😤 My friend had already read this book so she was privy to ALOT of over reacting on my part. Not because I didn't like it but because I was wayyy too invested whenever two certain characters would get together or whenever the FMC blindly trusted that certain MC. Boy did I celebrate when the betrayal was revealed even though I smelled it a mile away 🤣 I'm trying to not spoil it for anyone else while being very vague so now GO READ HOUSE OF BLIGHT!!

Non- Spoiler:
When I first read the premise of this book, I knew I would like it. It had a ton of elements in the description that appealed to me. Little did I know how much I would enjoy and grow to love this book.
The writing is excellent, it pulls you in immediately and, at least for me, it kept me hooked. I found myself making predictions on what was going to happen next. Some predictions came true, partially. Others didn’t. And there were many twists and turns I didn’t see coming. I really enjoyed the ending of this book as well. It didn’t end on a cliffhanger necessarily, but it still makes me excited for the next book.
I loved how the author weaves in different fabric references (see what I did there?) due to the FMC, Edira, being a ‘tread mender’ which refers to people’s life threads. She is, essentially, a powerful healer. I’m in healthcare and I love fantasy depictions of healing. This was no exception. I loved the detail in which the author describes Eirda’s powers.
Spoilers Ahead!:
There will be spoilers from here on out, so if you don’t want anything spoiled, and I recommend you don’t, click away.
Okay, normally I try very hard to keep spoilers out of my review, but I need to process a few things.
The first being, my like-dislike relationship with the FMC, Edira. I went through an emotional rollercoaster with this girl. From the beginning of the book, I really liked her personality. Throughout the story, I had to keep reminding myself that she was young and she was thrown into a place where she truly did not know who to trust. It seemed like the entire Ever community was out to get her, but some intentions were far more nefarious than others. Despite the warnings she received from Vora and even Seville, to not trust anyone, Edira still found herself in bad situations. Normally I would write this FMC off as annoying, or idiotic. I have a pretty low tolerance for those things. But the author does such an amazing job at subtly reminding the reader that nothing is ever as it seems in this world. Edira has a headstrong personality, but she also has an endearing, caring side to her which I couldn’t help but admire and enjoy. That means I was screaming at her to get her head out of her bum and realize that something wasn’t quite right with Orin. It was obvious that he was up to something, but actions around the 50% mark confirmed it for me. I needed to remind myself that Edira is young and she’s desperate to trust Orin, especially since he had her brothers. Even when I reminded myself of those facts, I still found myself groaning about how blind she was to certain actions. I think she redeemed herself in the end, at least in my eyes, and she learned some tough lessons. To be that invested in a character is always a sign of great writing in my mind. So while I didn’t always like Edira’s choices and actions, I understood them and liked the person she was underneath.
There is a great message throughout the book about the glamour Evers use to hide any little flaw. Whether that be a scar or blight. It can be seen as a metaphor for how beauty is only skin deep. But it’s an excellent social commentary as well. So many people in our own modern society want to cover up flaws and try to stop the aging process or effects of aging. In the end, it will always catch up with you. It was very well done.
More thoughts:
Orin is a PoS.
Rorik, though he made poor choices in the beginning, was still great enough that I’ve fully forgiven him and I can’t wait to see more of him. I loved the insect whisperer aspect to him, I thought it made him unique.
The family dynamics of the Ferngloves was mysterious and drama filled. I loved it.
Ywena was one of my favorite ‘characters’ of all. I wasn’t sure about there being a moth companion. I loved her and grew so attached to her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Gothic Fantasy meets Cottage Core
Verified PurchaseI FINALLY got to finish this amazing book! Had life not interfered it would have likely been a 1-2 day read.
I absolutely loved this story from the very first pages of the prologue to the last. It’s book one in a brand new series (No real cliff hanger so you’re good!) following a young woman who has already been through hell. Our FMC is living in a small village as an apothecary in a world where a disease is rampant. And one called blight it’s a constant threat with no cure. It took her parents, family, friends and is about to take her brothers when she makes a life changing decision to use her forbidden powers to attempt to save them.
She has the ability to heal *almost* any ailment but it costs her time. She loses a bit of her life every time she heals with her power and was told never to use it.
When her brothers suddenly contract blight she sees the entirety of her world dying before her and the prepares to heal them. No healer like her has ever been successful and she would likely die trying, but before she can, a fae lord who oversees their lands intervenes and convinces her to work for him and attempt to find a cure for the blight and save her brothers.
The fae of the land are as beautiful and flawless as ever. They’re superior in every way, selfish and conceded. But when this lord made her an airtight deal promising her services would only extend to curing one fae, then she would be free, she couldn’t say no. Her brothers were held in a magical stasis while she researched and tried to find a way to cure the blight.
Little did she know there were so many layers of secrets to this disease, house, and residents. And she may not make it out alive.
