About the author

Barbara Taylor Bradford, OBE, is one of the world's best loved storytellers. Her 1979 debut novel, A Woman of Substance, ranks as one of the top-ten bestselling books of all-time, with more than 30 million copies in print. All her novels to date have been major worldwide bestsellers.
Barbara was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, the only child of Freda and Winston Taylor. She grew up in the Leeds suburb of Armley and left school at 15 for the typing pool at the Yorkshire Evening Post. At 16 she was a reporter, and at 18 she became the papers first womans page editor. By the time she was 20, she had moved to London where she became a fashion editor and columnist on Fleet Street. Barbara started writing fiction when she was just seven, and sold her first short story to a magazine for seven shillings and sixpence when she was ten years old.
Barbaras books have sold more than 91 million copies worldwide in more than 90 countries and 40 languages. Ten of her books were made into Emmy-nominated miniseries and television movies by her late husband, the film producer Robert Bradford.
In 2007, Barbara was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for her contributions to literature. A passionate supporter of literacy, she is an ambassador for the National Literacy Trust; in 2019 she was made an ambassador for Women in Journalism and in the same year she was presented with The Leeds Award, which recognised her loyalty to, and depiction of, her Yorkshire roots. Her original manuscripts are archived at the Brotherton Library at Leeds University, alongside the works of the Bronte sisters. She lives in New York City.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 21, 2004I loved this book, but I'm reading them backwards. I started with the last book in the series, this one is the second. However I loved it. Some people may get confused with all the different ties between the families, but the book is a classic among romance novels. Highly recommended for a good albeit long read.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 10, 2025Verified PurchaseAfter finishing A Woman of Substance, which I loved! I picked up this sequel, and oh my, the author does love describing every lamp and drape in the room! The story is predictable, and the characters are too, but I still found myself turning the pages, much like when I keep watching one of those cheesy TV dramas just to see how it ends. I did end up skipping a lot of the endless details near the end because it was just too much. If you enjoy lots of descriptions and a bit of romance and family drama, you might like it. Its not high literature by any means, but its a decent read for a rainy afternoon when you want something light.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 20, 2015Verified PurchaseLoved it. Even though this series has been around for years they have a timeless appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another easy to read from Bradford Taylor
Verified PurchaseEasy to read and carrying on from Woman of Substance so following the family throughout the next generation and their continuation of running the various businesses which was started by their loving grandmother, Emma Harte who is still alive but in the background. Character detail and description of places occur frequently to bring you vividly into the setting as always Bradford Taylor presents so well. And it is so simple to read, put down and pick up and enjoy.
