Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra romp elegantly through the scenic, moneyed grounds and waters of outwardly elitist Newport, Rhode Island, in this hip, witty musical version of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story. Legendary Louis Armstrong as himself, plays his trumpet and narrates in prose and song the peccadillos of his songwriter friend C.K. Dexter Haven (Crosby), his beautiful perfectionist ex-wife Tracy Samantha Lord (Kelly, in her final film role), and her stuffy fiancee George Kittredge (John Lund). Sinatra and wise-cracking Celeste Holm are a scandal sheet reporter and photographer who arrive to cover the wedding and complicate the tangled romances. Armstrong and his composer buddy conspire musically and by other devious means to stop Tracy's marriage. Dexter wants her back, but she takes off with the magazine writer -- all of which gives everybody wonderful excuses to break into the incomparable songs of Cole Porter. M-G-M pulled out all the stops to make High Society a must-see screen event back in 1956, even arranging to license Paramount's magnificent widescreen process VistaVision, to ensure the film would be something special. Now meticulously restored and remastered in 4K UHD HDR and Dolby Vision from its original VistaVision negative, and accompanied by a thrilling new Dolby Atmos remixed soundtrack, High Society looks and sounds better than ever before!

    "High Society" was a fish out of water at MGM. The original play, the Hepburn-Grant-Stewart film was a masterpiece, but this version, despite Cole Porter in charge of the songs always seemed to take the sparkle and turn it into dross. In part because Bing Crosby walked through his part, as he often did, but here as though Grace Kelly was Dixie Lee. And Kelly started out promisingly and had her moments, but the 'act' she put on for Sinatra and Celeste Holm lacked Hepburn's cutting edge and made her a less desirable woman. Sinatra and Holm - oh, yes. They were the forces that made the movie zing, so much so that a sequel with the two of them playing the same characters would have been much more vastly entertaining than this one. Louis Armstrong was a flavour one either cared for, or distrusted. Here, the former comes through at times, but match him with Crosby and the result does not show off Armstrong, though it reveals why Crosby gets all the worst songs in the movie and Sinatra gets the best. Porter was no fool; he knew who would walk through his songs and who would deliver them with class. Even the big hit, 'True Love", is dull. Kelly couldn't sing so the vocal range is terribly limited, which suits Crosby, too. Fred Astaire and Crosby, together in several films, revealed the same startling comparison. Astaire got the best songs, and Crosby got the dull ones and delivered them as dull. Yes, I know everyone loved "White Christmas", but we can all sing it as well as Crosby did, and it had the sentimental punch of a desire to be home and free of WWII. Back to "Society"
    It has all the gloss of MGM at its best. Lovely homes, beautiful clothes, conspicuous and over the top wealth; but here, not much heart which MGM could produce while Paramount staggered when it tried - Rosemary Clooney actually provided Paramount with the best of its musicals while getting only about two minutes of MGM's time in "Deep in My Heart"
    But the price is now right, so I added this film to my collection, the last major film from MGM's great days as the source of musical masterpieces to join the dozens that I own. And how nice it is to skip "Little One" and head for "You're Sensational". "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", and Mind If I Make Love to You", which must have given Cole Porter great joy, such as they still can for today's audience.

    This is an excellent presentation of a truly fabulous movie. Everything is first rate. Imagine having two of the greatest singers of all time (Frank Sinatra & Bing Crosby) together in one movie. They even sing a song together; it is spectacular. Everyone seems to be having a lot of fun. Grace Kelly is exquisite as always but you also have to love Celeste Holm as the well grounded photographer who eventually gets her man. The only downer is having a middle aged man (Bing Crosby) romancing a young girl (Grace Kelly); in real life she'd want a man with more mileage left in him. There's lots of wonderful songs, snappy jokes & a happy ending. Who could ask for more? High Society has my highest recommendation.
