I am very happy with this economy lens. I received my Vivitar lens, right on time and tested it against a standard Canon kit lens a 250mm zoom lens, then against this Vivitar at 500mm and then again at 1,000mm.
Predicably, as you increase the focal length, things get much darker, but I compensated with longer exposure lengths and increasing the ISO.
Understandably, at 1,000 there is shake. Even on a normal camera tripod, too. However, this can be mitigated by shortening the exposure time and raising the ISO. I have since done a second test, using a more heavier, more stable tripod, again at the challenging 1000mm -- and the very slight shake significantly lessened. (It is not the lens that is the problem ... its the tripod.) I also used a wireless shutter release, to minimize camera shake.
My testing was done under heavy overcast sky, with light precipitation. That said, I will test again, under bright, Sun-lit sky -- and I fully expect even better results, as the exposure times will be much faster.
BOTTOM LINE: Excellent value. I am very much more happy with this lens that I expected. I normally work with Canon and Nikon equipment. (Just bought this to photograph the April 8 eclipse ... using proper and certified solar-safe filters, of course). With my particular camera, my field of view is about 3 degrees, at 500mm, and about half that at 1000mm.
