    So I must admit, that I really bought this advent calendar for myself but gave it to my son and was always hanging around when he was solving the riddles so we eventually ended up working on it together 🤣. There aren’t many things my 14 year old likes to do with me at the moment but this was one of them so a big winner in my opinion. Engaging puzzles with some technology sprinkled in. Totally worth the money. We tried to do only one puzzle a day but couldn’t stop ourselves. The end was a bit cheesy but it got a chuckle so all good.

    Honestly, this is a solid 4.5 out of 5 but it would have been a 5/5 if it wasn't for some flaws.

    First the good. The look on my kid's face when he first saw it was that of major disappointment. He wanted to return it so we can get a toy-based advent. He loves geography and he loves puzzles, but didn't want to try originally but eventually he decided to give it a shot. Not only did he love it, but it's his (and our) favourite advent by far. Each day has a different style of riddle or puzzle, some are easy, some are not, some are craze elaborate. It's a joy and we were all so excited to try the next day.

    Now the bad.

    1. There's a typo in one of the letters that makes it impossible to solve. If you use the hints (via their website) it points out the correction. That's fine and I wouldn't remove a star for it because they made good on it.

    2. One of the puzzles has you spell a word in a non-english language which is fine, but the answer isn't the word you spell out but rather, it "sort of looks like another word". I'm native to the language and it's really a stretch, it's not even close. I found that cheap.

    3. One of the puzzles has 4 phone numbers that you have to call (you choose the one closest to you). The problem is the second those phone numbers go out of service because the company stops paying for them, that letter will become unsolvable. There's also one that requires you to visit a website that can have the same issue. It's a bit of a shame since all the other cards can be done offline.

    4. This is really where it loses the start, near the end, I had three envelopes left. One of the hints required you to figure out a word. We figured out the word, opened the envelope but it wasn't the right one. I went to the hint site to see if I did something wrong but it says "the answer is {the word we figured out}, but the envelope you want to open has {unrelated word} instead". Huh? Why? I've read through the envelope and the hint so many times and I still cannot figure out why they'd give you an answer but the real answer is specifically not that answer.

    The last one really bothers me because it kind of just ruins the game a bit, especially since it was so close to the end. Overall it was great and solving the problems was a of fun. The two answers that were misleading was obviously bad quality control but at least solving them was fun. Having two puzzles where you need to rely on a phone number or a website that can go bust is also not idea.

    I 100% recommend it despite those flaws

    So I bought this as an advent calendar for my 12 year old son who LOVES escape rooms. He absolutely loves this and so do I! It is well put together and visually beautiful. The challenges are just difficult enough and unique with some stuff that we hadn't seen before. We are able to sort through them though. I like how it really challenges you to use different mental skills. He kept on thanking me and saying it was the best gift. I honestly don' t know how I will top it next year!. :)

    I’ve enjoyed this advent calendar so far. I’m on day 14. The puzzles have a mix of easy to difficult and do require creative and logical thinking.

    I gave this 3 stars because of the following:

    There are some mistakes in some of the puzzles that you only find out after giving up and looking up the hints on the website.

    There was a puzzle that was so hard that I used all the hints, but then the answer wasn’t explained at all. So I’m left without closure or understanding why.

    Also, there was a puzzle that required calling international numbers. Knowing that it’s not included in my phone plan, I was forced to use the hints to move on. This is a huge oversight on the game makers’ part.

    If none of those things bother you, then I say this is a great alternative to candy advent calendars.

    If you’re in doubt - BUY IT! Our little family had the most best time with this game/advent. We looked forward to it each day and got us really excited during the holiday season. It was nice to have something to bring us all together at the end of a long day and gave so much enjoyment. If you’re on the fence the puzzles were well thought out and the story was engaging. Just a really fun way to look forward to spending tie DAILY as a family. I’d even recommended these outside of the holiday season. Our family has bought a few of the “escape room” type advents last winter to keep the tradition going and we cant wait to start back on our winter tradition. (I will say though that this one will always be the pinnacle that you look back to - it’s THAT good!).
