De bekende First Dates-presentator Sergio Vyent groeide op in Nederland zonder veel te weten van zijn roots. Totdat hij erfgenaam bleek van een stuk grond op de vroegere plantage Onverwagt, was hij nog nooit in Suriname geweest.


Na het overlijden van zijn biologische moeder in 2021 reist Sergio naar Suriname om de uitvaart te regelen. Hij maakt er kennis met familie die hem meer kunnen vertellen over zijn ouders en voorouders. Zijn stamboom blijkt diep geworteld in het koloniale verleden van Suriname, en Sergio gaat op onderzoek uit. Uiteindelijk komen op de plantage Onverwagt een grote en kleine geschiedenis op een onvergetelijke manier bij elkaar. Een persoonlijk, wonderbaarlijk verhaal dat weerklinkt tegen het decor van ons gezamenlijke verleden.
