New York Timesٲ!

"Remarkable." —
Leo Carey, The New Yorker

"Fearsomely complex." —
Douglas Wolk, Publishers Weekly

"My all-time favorite graphic novel … an immense, majestic work about the Jack the Ripper murders, the dark Victorian world they happened in, and the birth of the 20th century." —
Warren Ellis, Entertainment Weekly

"Moore's works have often defied the public's expectations of the medium, and his most ambitious work, the massive graphic novel
From Hell, is no exception. … The result is at once a meditation on evil, a police procedural and a commentary on Victorian England. … an impressive piece of work." — Patrick Day, The Los Angeles Times

"A massive exploration of the Jack The Ripper murders that incorporates British history, Masonic ritual, and London geography in a fascinating and horrifying conspiracy theory." —
Tasha Robinson, The AV Club

"Moore, one of the great fiction minds of his generation, never accomplished anything more satisfying than this. Both creators are at the top of their game: Campbell's grubby lines are the perfect evocation of the horror of everyday Victorian life in the underclasses, while Moore's allegorical plotting — looping in the Royal family, Masonic occult ritual, the Elephant Man and the nature of London itself — makes for a hypnotic read and perpetual re-read." —
Joe Gross, Rolling Stone

"Centered on the murders of Jack the Ripper, From Hell delivers a very frightening and suspenseful story that has captivated audiences for years." —CBR

Fairly ingenious, this story traces history to a Center stage set of crimes that births, arguably, the Anthropocene unconscious, and the fascinating relationship of western culture with death. It morphs into a story about fiction becoming fact and fact becoming fiction, and less about anything reportedly true, though it is undoubtedly pseudo-fact. Appendixes report on the facts and allusions and liberties Moore takes with this work. Then the final chapter traces the evolution of the Ripper theories. Thus this becomes a story that trolls the idea that there is a definitive answer to murders, especially as it pertains to such historical malleable events. That doesn’t mean it has nothing to say. Arguably, it conveys far more than any other murder mystery. It roundly manages to condemn many aspects of bigotry, racism, hate, and imperialism; entertain with a mystery married to philosophy and meta physic wondering, and the very nature of the genre.

At a form and structure and prose craft level, I think this is pretty unparalleled. Even the lettering conveys specific dialects and education levels with grammar and typography and spacing, or even alertness or drunkenness. The panels are engaging, the art grew on me very much. Initially, I didn’t like it much at all but—perhaps because this version is also colored?—it undeniably has a lot of skill and spends time on the things that matter. Some scenes are absolute perfection the entire thing is extremely cinematic. The structure is intricate but easy to consume.

I don’t agree that it’s a challenging read. It flows well and the allusions at the start are explicit at the end, then even more so in the appendixes, of course. It’s less complex and more interesting than I had initially expected. Absolutely something I’ll pick up and read again.

I bought this book as a present for myself. I am a collector of horror graphic novels and was so pleased to receive this book. The story is multi-layered and intelligent. The colours are a little muted to help keep the original feel of the black and white. The colours are complimentary without being gaudy. A large book too. I have just gotten started and can't put it down. An excellent addition to my collection.

It was for a Xmas gift and my friend was really happy and excited. Seems it is like the 2nd best work of Allan Moore. It was a surprisingly big book and really beautiful pictures and lots of dialogues.

As a fan of the original FROM HELL I've been eager to get my hands on the newly updated and moderately colourized Master Edition, and it's as beautiful as I had hoped. Minor damage to the very bottom of the spine is the only thing that drops this by a star.

Well it’s Jack the Ripper in all it’s gory. It’s got a lot of reading in it compared to newer graphic novels. It’s pretty gory and sexual and by sexual I mean pornographic. If that’s not for you skip this read and if it is enjoy.

I don't get why this is such a highly regarded book. It's ugly; I think the art is ugly by design but ugly is ugly. The story is disjointed, bland, and unoriginal. It is not, by any measure, one of Moore's better works. All I can figure is that this was edgy for the time it was released, and all its fame comes from nostalgia and Alan Moore fanboys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un viaggio inquietante

This is a great book. I'm not alone in thinking this as it's won a slew of awards. Alan Moore is so confident of its potential popularity that he doesn't even put his name on it. I've read only a borrowed black and white copy before and am looking forward to enjoying this colourised edition. Known to be based on the theories postulated in Stephen Knight's 1976 book "Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution" , the fact that most of the theories in Knight's book have been discredited doesn't detract from what is a very gripping, well told story. The movie, which I enjoyed, follows Knight, rather than Moore, in it's plot. If you're into graphic novels, this is a must have.

Review for the book & delivery, not the story. Will be comparing the book to the deluxe edition of Watchmen and V for Vendetta also by the Mad Wizard Mr Moore.

    The Good

    1. The quality of the paper and printing are fantastic. Especially compared to the Watchmen and V for Vendetta deluxe edition. Both watchmen and V for Vendetta quickly pick up fingerprints on the print/images. With V for Vendetta it's the worst, where I tried to remove some finger print with a soft, clean and dry microfiber cloth, and it actually removed some of the black paint.

    2. The font is very nice and readable. Watchmen was incredibly frustrating to read, because everything was in all caps and the punctuation almost invisibly small. V for Vendetta wasn't much better, but still, it was better. This is far more readable and the font looks very pretty to boot.

    3. The book lays flat on the table! It's glued apparently but it has some heft to it and it lays flat on the table with no issues, even before breaking it in, which you should always do with large, hardcover books. (Put the book flat on the table with both sides of the cover opened up, holding all the pages upright in the middle, open one page left, then right and continue till you've reached the middle, intermittently slightly pressing on both sides of the book). Watchmen and V for Vendetta were much tighter.

    4. The margins are large enough so the art does not get obfuscated in the middle, which is a huge problem with watchmen and v for vendetta. You have to literally pull and press on the pages to see the art in the middle properly. And this in turn causes finger prints, which those books easily pick up. This book has great margins in the middle so all art is easily visible.

    The bad

    1. I expected the book to be a little larger, like watchmen and v for vendetta. Esp because it's a "master edition" I figured the book would be roughly the same size as those making the art and text larger. Unfortunately it's not so, I figure this is the size it was originally published or the standard size for comics. I'm not really a comic book person, so I'm not sure. But to me, larger is better.

    2. The book doesn't come wrapped in cellophane, which means it's basically impossible to get a copy that is in mint condition. The cover will have some scracthes or scuffs, not damage perse. But things a book would have from having been in storage, stacked in between other books etc.

    The ugly

    1. 鶹 was a bookstore. How is it possible that they don't know how to properly package a book? They put it in a cardboard envelope. I'm thankful thise book was large enough to not fit through the mail slot, because otherwise the heavy book lands on the stone floor and you can imagine what happens next. But still, it came with a very small dent in the top middle of the front cover. I'm someone that is very quick to send stuff back and reorder them, but this was so little damage I let it go. Mainly because I know the chances of the next copy having even more damage is very high. It's a gamble when you order from 鶹. Esp when the book isn't wrapped. I don't get why it's so hard to at least put some bubble wrap or something around the book before putting it in a flimsy cardboard envelope. I'll gladly play a couple of pennies more.

So why order from 鶹? Well, the reality is that 鶹 often has the best prices for book other sites or retail you're somewhat guaranteed good delivery (or at least packaging), but you might pay 30/50% more for the same book. Moreover, 鶹 has an absurdly good return policy. I've never, ever had an issue with sending something back and getting back my money. This is a very good thing. But, I also wonder if it wouldn't be better if amazon put a little bit more effort into packaging books. Because that way there would be far less returns, which would likely save them a lot more money. Because those returned books can't be sold as new (although, I suspect .. they are, even though they deny it. Same for 鶹 like Dutch sites like bol, which are as bad when it comes to book deliveries). Look at any review for any book/hardcover or special edition. Even the most expensive ones and you will see countless angry reviews from people who had their books delivered with extensive damage. Often not because of poor delivery but because 鶹 storage and careless amazon packaging.

Overall, I'm happy with the book. I do wonder if it was worth the 40+ euro. I didn't enjoy Watchmen or V for Vendetta as much as I hoped. Nor am I a fan of the art style of either (esp v for vendetta is horrible in that regard). So far From Hell looks to have pretty cool art (which is why it's a shame that it isn't in the bigger format). But the art in From Hell is also not very impressive. I hope the story is fun though, I imagine I will enjoy it due to the esoteric and adult nature. But will I enjoy it 40 euro's worth? IDK. I could have gotten a cheaper paperback, but I don't think that one is the new color version that is supposedly also closer to the original vision by Mr Moore. And I much prefer hardcovers on my shelves in the end of the day.
