Amid the grandeur of the remote Pacific Northwest stands Kingcome, a village so ancient that, according to Kwakiutl myth, it was founded by the two brothers left on earth after the great flood. The Native Americans who still live there call it Quee, a place of such incredible natural richness that hunting and fishing remain primary food sources.

But the old culture of totems and potlatch is being replaces by a new culture of prefab housing and alcoholism. Kingcome's younger generation is disenchanted and alienated from its heritage. And now, coming upriver is a young vicar, Mark Brian, on a journey of discovery that can teach him—and us—about life, death, and the transforming power of love.

I've heard good things about this book so I tried to purchase the mass market paperback. I've been waiting for months, had my order canceled multiple times, and then when it was just delivered on Dec 2nd, I open my copy only to see that it starts mid sentence on PG 33! Where's the first 32 pages.

This is a classic novel for our west coast of BC plus a heart stirring novel you will love! And a genuine story, an honest story about the indigenous people, the First Nation people of our west coast. You must all buy one.!! A story of love, compassion, nobility.

I first read this book over 30 years ago. Re-reading it has been just as compelling. It's relevance today as First Nations seek reconciliation, speaks to the loss of community and culture. This is a story gently told about a remote BC Coastal First Nations community welcoming an outsider who in turn embraces the people he has come to live among. The author captures the grandeur of the scenery, the pain of a community in transition and the enduring power of kindness, acceptance and love.

Once in a while you’ll come across a book that will tug at your heart, and will continue to do so long after you’ve put it down. Margaret Craven’s novel, I Heard the Owl Call My Name, is such a book. Mark Brian is a young Anglican vicar sent to an isolated Native village in British Columbia’s Pacific Northwest. He finds a people struggling to keep their culture alive⎯the young have alienated themselves from their cultural heritage and are adopting a more modern life in the white society. Broken totems poles and burial grounds where the moss-covered bones of their ancestors are left unattended is all that is left of a once noble nation. The young vicar has unknowingly been diagnosed with a fatal disease⎯it is his journey through the land of the dying and the departed that he will earn the right to a funeral for a king.
A truly wonderful, heart-wrenching story, which will have a permanent place on my shelf of books to read over and over again.

Margaret Craven writes beautifully, in a lyrical way. It is worth reading just for that beauty of the writing. Her prose is sober and she says much in the silences and the spaces she leaves between the words. An intelligent work, in the original meaning of the word intelligent - "inter lingere" (between the lines) -, as our imagination beautifully framed by the words can easily fill those spaces.

My favorite book. I was raised on the B.C. coast and every word of this book brings that life back to me with joy. I have read and re-read it.

An eloquent and flowing story of a young vicar who sent to a remote native tribe. They fall in love and you will too.
I first read this story many years ago and it is far more poignant to read now.

Came across this title via a television film and thought it was worth reading. It's a bit archaic, but interesting.

A nice story. Easy to read, good for non-English language learners, because it is clear but has still a lot of great new words. Motivating story, set to the background of the disappearance of the life of Native Americans, without negative judgments. Remember that it was published in the 60s, when A paternalistic style of colonialism was still valid. The situation has of course now changed, a lot for the better and worse.
